제 1 장

와스디 왕후가 폐위되다

1   이 일은 아하수에로 왕 때에 있었던 일이니 아하수에로는 인도로부터 구스까지 백이십칠 지방을 다스리는 왕이라

2   당시에 아하수에로 왕이 수산 궁에서 즉위하고

3   왕위에 있은 지 제삼년에 그의 모든 지방관과 신하들을 위하여 잔치를 베푸니 바사와 메대의 장수와 각 지방의 귀족과 지방관들이 다 왕 앞에 있는지라

4   왕이 여러 날 곧 백팔십 일 동안에 그의 영화로운 나라의 부함과 위엄의 혁혁함을 나타내니라

5   이 날이 지나매 왕이 또 도성 수산에 있는 귀천간의 백성을 위하여 왕궁 후원 뜰에서 칠 일 동안 잔치를 베풀새

6   백색, 녹색, 청색 휘장을 자색 가는 베 줄로 대리석 기둥 은고리에 매고 금과 은으로 만든 걸상을 화반석, 백석, 운모석, 흑석을 깐 땅에 진설하고

7   금 잔으로 마시게 하니 잔의 모양이 각기 다르고 왕이 풍부하였으므로 어주가 한이 없으며

8   마시는 것도 법도가 있어 사람으로 억지로 하지 않게 하니 이는 왕이 모든 궁내 관리에게 명령하여 각 사람이 마음대로 하게 함이더라

9   왕후 와스디도 아하수에로 왕궁에서 여인들을 위하여 잔치를 베푸니라

10   제칠일에 왕이 주흥이 일어나서 어전 내시 므후만과 비스다와 하르보나와 빅다와 아박다와 세달과 가르가스 일곱 사람을 명령하여

11   왕후 와스디를 청하여 왕후의 관을 정제하고 왕 앞으로 나아오게 하여 그의 아리따움을 뭇 백성과 지방관들에게 보이게 하라 하니 이는 왕후의 용모가 보기에 좋음이라

12   그러나 왕후 와스디는 내시가 전하는 왕명을 따르기를 싫어하니 왕이 진노하여 마음속이 불 붙는 듯하더라

13   왕이 사례를 아는 현자들에게 묻되 (왕이 규례와 법률을 아는 자에게 묻는 전례가 있는데

14   그 때에 왕에게 가까이 하여 왕의 기색을 살피며 나라 첫 자리에 앉은 자는 바사와 메대의 일곱 지방관 곧 가르스나와 세달과 아드마다와 다시스와 메레스와 마르스나와 므무간이라)

15   왕후 와스디가 내시가 전하는 아하수에로 왕의 명령을 따르지 아니하니 규례대로 하면 어떻게 처치할까

16   므무간이 왕과 지방관 앞에서 대답하여 이르되 왕후 와스디가 왕에게만 잘못했을 뿐 아니라 아하수에로 왕의 각 지방의 관리들과 뭇 백성에게도 잘못하였나이다

17   아하수에로 왕이 명령하여 왕후 와스디를 청하여도 오지 아니하였다 하는 왕후의 행위의 소문이 모든 여인들에게 전파되면 그들도 그들의 남편을 멸시할 것인즉

18   오늘이라도 바사와 메대의 귀부인들이 왕후의 행위를 듣고 왕의 모든 지방관들에게 그렇게 말하리니 멸시와 분노가 많이 일어나리이다

19   왕이 만일 좋게 여기실진대 와스디가 다시는 왕 앞에 오지 못하게 하는 조서를 내리되 바사와 메대의 법률에 기록하여 변개함이 없게 하고 그 왕후의 자리를 그보다 나은 사람에게 주소서

20   왕의 조서가 이 광대한 전국에 반포되면 귀천을 막론하고 모든 여인들이 그들의 남편을 존경하리이다 하니라

21   왕과 지방관들이 그 말을 옳게 여긴지라 왕이 므무간의 말대로 행하여

22   각 지방 각 백성의 문자와 언어로 모든 지방에 조서를 내려 이르기를 남편이 자기의 집을 주관하게 하고 자기 민족의 언어로 말하게 하라 하였더라

La reina Vasti desafía a Asuero

1Aconteció en los días de Asuero, el Asuero que reinó desde la India hasta Etiopía sobre ciento veintisiete provincias, 2que en aquellos días, cuando fue afirmado el rey Asuero sobre el trono de su reino, el cual estaba en Susa capital del reino, 3en el tercer año de su reinado hizo banquete a todos sus príncipes y cortesanos, teniendo delante de él a los más poderosos de Persia y de Media, gobernadores y príncipes de provincias, 4para mostrar él las riquezas de la gloria de su reino, el brillo y la magnificencia de su poder, por muchos días, ciento ochenta días. 5Y cumplidos estos días, hizo el rey otro banquete por siete días en el patio del huerto del palacio real a todo el pueblo que había en Susa capital del reino, desde el mayor hasta el menor. 6El pabellón era de blanco, verde y azul, tendido sobre cuerdas de lino y púrpura en anillos de plata y columnas de mármol; los reclinatorios de oro y de plata, sobre losado de pórfido y de mármol, y de alabastro y de jacinto. 7Y daban a beber en vasos de oro, y vasos diferentes unos de otros, y mucho vino real, de acuerdo con la generosidad del rey. 8Y la bebida era según esta ley: Que nadie fuese obligado a beber; porque así lo había mandado el rey a todos los mayordomos de su casa, que se hiciese según la voluntad de cada uno. 9Asimismo la reina Vasti hizo banquete para las mujeres, en la casa real del rey Asuero.

10El séptimo día, estando el corazón del rey alegre del vino, mandó a Mehumán, Bizta, Harbona, Bigta, Abagta, Zetar y Carcas, siete eunucos que servían delante del rey Asuero, 11que trajesen a la reina Vasti a la presencia del rey con la corona regia, para mostrar a los pueblos y a los príncipes su belleza; porque era hermosa. 12Mas la reina Vasti no quiso comparecer a la orden del rey enviada por medio de los eunucos; y el rey se enojó mucho, y se encendió en ira.

13Preguntó entonces el rey a los sabios que conocían los tiempos (porque así acostumbraba el rey con todos los que sabían la ley y el derecho; 14y estaban junto a él Carsena, Setar, Admata, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena y Memucán, siete príncipes de Persia y de Media que veían la cara del rey, y se sentaban los primeros del reino); 15les preguntó qué se había de hacer con la reina Vasti según la ley, por cuanto no había cumplido la orden del rey Asuero enviada por medio de los eunucos. 16Y dijo Memucán delante del rey y de los príncipes: No solamente contra el rey ha pecado la reina Vasti, sino contra todos los príncipes, y contra todos los pueblos que hay en todas las provincias del rey Asuero. 17Porque este hecho de la reina llegará a oídos de todas las mujeres, y ellas tendrán en poca estima a sus maridos, diciendo: El rey Asuero mandó traer delante de sí a la reina Vasti, y ella no vino. 18Y entonces dirán esto las señoras de Persia y de Media que oigan el hecho de la reina, a todos los príncipes del rey; y habrá mucho menosprecio y enojo. 19Si parece bien al rey, salga un decreto real de vuestra majestad y se escriba entre las leyes de Persia y de Media, para que no sea quebrantado: Que Vasti no venga más delante del rey Asuero; y el rey haga reina a otra que sea mejor que ella. 20Y el decreto que dicte el rey será oído en todo su reino, aunque es grande, y todas las mujeres darán honra a sus maridos, desde el mayor hasta el menor. 21Agradó esta palabra a los ojos del rey y de los príncipes, e hizo el rey conforme al dicho de Memucán; 22pues envió cartas a todas las provincias del rey, a cada provincia conforme a su escritura, y a cada pueblo conforme a su lenguaje, diciendo que todo hombre afirmase su autoridad en su casa; y que se publicase esto en la lengua de su pueblo.

The King’s Banquets

1Now in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127 provinces, 2in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in Susa, the citadel, 3in the third year of his reign he gave a feast for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were before him, 4while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and pomp of his greatness for many days, 180 days. 5And when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa the citadel, both great and small, a feast lasting for seven days in the court of the garden of the king’s palace. 6There were white cotton curtains and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rods and marble pillars, and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and precious stones. 7Drinks were served in golden vessels, vessels of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king. 8And drinking was according to this edict: “There is no compulsion.” For the king had given orders to all the staff of his palace to do as each man desired. 9Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women in the palace that belonged to King Ahasuerus.

Queen Vashti’s Refusal

10On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, 11to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at. 12But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him.

13Then the king said to the wise men who knew the times (for this was the king’s procedure toward all who were versed in law and judgment, 14the men next to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom): 15“According to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti, because she has not performed the command of King Ahasuerus delivered by the eunuchs?” 16Then Memucan said in the presence of the king and the officials, “Not only against the king has Queen Vashti done wrong, but also against all the officials and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 17For the queen’s behavior will be made known to all women, causing them to look at their husbands with contempt, since they will say, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, and she did not come.’ 18This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will say the same to all the king’s officials, and there will be contempt and wrath in plenty. 19If it please the king, let a royal order go out from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes so that it may not be repealed, that Vashti is never again to come before King Ahasuerus. And let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. 20So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, for it is vast, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low alike.” 21This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memucan proposed. 22He sent letters to all the royal provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, that every man be master in his own household and speak according to the language of his people.
