다윗이 암몬과 싸우다(대상 19:1-19)

1 그 후에 암몬 자손의 왕이 죽고 그의 아들 하눈이 대신하여 왕이 되니

2 다윗이 이르되 내가 나하스의 아들 하눈에게 은총을 베풀되 그의 아버지가 내게 은총을 베푼 것 같이 하리라 하고 다윗이 그의 신하들을 보내 그의 아버지를 조상하라 하니라 다윗의 신하들이 암몬 자손의 땅에 이르매

3 암몬 자손의 관리들이 그들의 주 하눈에게 말하되 왕은 다윗이 조객을 당신에게 보낸 것이 왕의 아버지를 공경함인 줄로 여기시나이까 다윗이 그의 신하들을 당신에게 보내 이 성을 엿보고 탐지하여 함락시키고자 함이 아니니이까 하니

4 이에 하눈이 다윗의 신하들을 잡아 그들의 수염 절반을 깎고 그들의 의복의 중동볼기까지 자르고 돌려보내매

5 사람들이 이 일을 다윗에게 알리니라 그 사람들이 크게 부끄러워하므로 왕이 그들을 맞으러 보내 이르기를 너희는 수염이 자라기까지 여리고에서 머물다가 돌아오라 하니라

6 암몬 자손들이 자기들이 다윗에게 미움이 된 줄 알고 암몬 자손들이 사람을 보내 벧르홉 아람 사람과 소바 아람 사람의 보병 이만 명과 마아가 왕과 그의 사람 천 명과 돕 사람 만 이천 명을 고용한지라

7 다윗이 듣고 요압과 용사의 온 무리를 보내매

8 암몬 자손은 나와서 성문 어귀에 진을 쳤고 소바와 르홉 아람 사람과 돕과 마아가 사람들은 따로 들에 있더라

9 요압이 자기와 맞서 앞뒤에 친 적진을 보고 이스라엘의 선발한 자 중에서 또 엄선하여 아람 사람과 싸우려고 진 치고

10 그 백성의 남은 자를 그 아우 아비새의 수하에 맡겨 암몬 자손과 싸우려고 진 치게 하고

11 이르되 만일 아람 사람이 나보다 강하면 네가 나를 돕고 만일 암몬 자손이 너보다 강하면 내가 가서 너를 도우리라

12 너는 담대하라 우리가 우리 백성과 우리 하나님의 성읍들을 위하여 담대히 하자 여호와께서 선히 여기시는 대로 행하시기를 원하노라 하고

13 요압과 그와 함께 한 백성이 아람 사람을 대항하여 싸우려고 나아가니 그들이 그 앞에서 도망하고

14 암몬 자손은 아람 사람이 도망함을 보고 그들도 아비새 앞에서 도망하여 성읍으로 들어간지라 요압이 암몬 자손을 떠나 예루살렘으로 돌아가니라

15 아람 사람이 자기가 이스라엘 앞에서 패하였음을 보고 다 모이매

16 하닷에셀이 사람을 보내 강 건너쪽에 있는 아람 사람을 불러 내매 그들이 헬람에 이르니 하닷에셀의 군사령관 소박이 그들을 거느린지라

17 어떤 사람이 다윗에게 알리매 그가 온 이스라엘을 모으고 요단을 건너 헬람에 이르매 아람 사람들이 다윗을 향하여 진을 치고 더불어 싸우더니

18 아람 사람이 이스라엘 앞에서 도망한지라 다윗이 아람 병거 칠백 대와 마병 사만 명을 죽이고 또 그 군사령관 소박을 치매 거기서 죽으니라

19 하닷에셀에게 속한 왕들이 자기가 이스라엘 앞에서 패함을 보고 이스라엘과 화친하고 섬기니 그러므로 아람 사람들이 두려워하여 다시는 암몬 자손을 돕지 아니하니라

Mas llegados los siervos de David a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, 3. los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún su señor: ¿Te parece que por honrar David a tu padre te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No ha enviado David sus siervos a ti para reconocer e inspeccionar la ciudad, para destruirla? 4. Entonces Hanún tomó los siervos de David, les rapó la mitad de la barba, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad hasta las nalgas, y los despidió. 5. Cuando se le hizo saber esto a David, envió a encontrarles, porque ellos estaban en extremo avergonzados; y el rey mandó que les dijeran: Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os vuelva a nacer la barba, y entonces volved. 6. Y viendo los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, enviaron los hijos de Amón y tomaron a sueldo a los sirios de Bet-rehob y a los sirios de Soba, veinte mil hombres de a pie, del rey de Maaca mil hombres, y de Is-tob doce mil hombres. 7. Cuando David oyó esto, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los valientes. 8. Y saliendo los hijos de Amón, se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la puerta; pero los sirios de Soba, de Rehob, de Is-tob y de Maaca estaban aparte en el campo. 9. Viendo, pues, Joab que se le presentaba la batalla de frente y a la retaguardia, entresacó de todos los escogidos de Israel, y se puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios. 10. Entregó luego el resto del ejército en mano de Abisai su hermano, y lo alineó para encontrar a los amonitas. 11. Y dijo: Si los sirios pudieren más que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Amón pudieren más que tú, yo te daré ayuda. 12. Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le pareciere. 13. Y se acercó Joab, y el pueblo que con él estaba, para pelear contra los sirios; mas ellos huyeron delante de él. 14. Entonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Se volvió, pues, Joab de luchar contra los hijos de Amón, y vino a Jerusalén. 15. Pero los sirios, viendo que habían sido derrotados por Israel, se volvieron a reunir. 16. Y envió Hadad-ezer e hizo salir a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, los cuales vinieron a Helam, llevando por jefe a Sobac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer. 17. Cuando fue dado aviso a David, reunió a todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino a Helam; y los sirios se pusieron en orden de batalla contra David y pelearon contra él. 18. Mas los sirios huyeron delante de Israel; y David mató de los sirios a la gente de setecientos carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de a caballo; hirió también a Sobac general del ejército, quien murió allí. 19. When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men. 7. And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men. 8. And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country. 9. When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. 10. The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. 11. And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12. Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 13. So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14. And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem. 15. But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16. And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates. They came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17. And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18. And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19. And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.

David Defeats Ammon and Syria

After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.
And David said, “I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites.
But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?”
So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away.
When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”
When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men.
And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.
And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country.
When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians.
