제 14 장

압살롬이 예루살렘으로 돌아오다

1 스루야의 아들 요압이 왕의 마음이 압살롬에게로 향하는 줄 알고

2 드고아에 사람을 보내 거기서 지혜로운 여인 하나를 데려다가 그에게 이르되 청하건대 너는 상주가 된 것처럼 상복을 입고 기름을 바르지 말고 죽은 사람을 위하여 오래 슬퍼하는 여인 같이 하고

3 왕께 들어가서 그에게 이러이러하게 말하라고 요압이 그의 입에 할 말을 넣어 주니라

4 드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢸 때에 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 이르되 왕이여 도우소서 하니

5 왕이 그에게 이르되 무슨 일이냐 하니라 대답하되 나는 진정으로 과부니이다 남편은 죽고

6 이 여종에게 아들 둘이 있더니 그들이 들에서 싸우나 그들을 말리는 사람이 아무도 없으므로 한 아이가 다른 아이를 쳐죽인지라

7 온 족속이 일어나서 당신의 여종 나를 핍박하여 말하기를 그의 동생을 쳐죽인 자를 내놓으라 우리가 그의 동생 죽인 죄를 갚아 그를 죽여 상속자 될 것까지 끊겠노라 하오니 그러한즉 그들이 내게 남아 있는 숯불을 꺼서 내 남편의 이름과 씨를 세상에 남겨두지 아니하겠나이다 하니

8 왕이 여인에게 이르되 네 집으로 가라 내가 너를 위하여 명령을 내리리라 하는지라

9 드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢰되 내 주 왕이여 그 죄는 나와 내 아버지의 집으로 돌릴 것이니 왕과 왕위는 허물이 없으리이다

10 왕이 이르되 누구든지 네게 말하는 자를 내게로 데려오라 그가 다시는 너를 건드리지도 못하리라 하니라

11 여인이 이르되 청하건대 왕은 왕의 하나님 여호와를 기억하사 원수 갚는 자가 더 죽이지 못하게 하옵소서 내 아들을 죽일까 두렵나이다 하니 왕이 이르되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네 아들의 머리카락 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라 하니라

12 여인이 이르되 청하건대 당신의 여종을 용납하여 한 말씀을 내 주 왕께 여쭙게 하옵소서 하니 그가 이르되 말하라 하니라

13 여인이 이르되 그러면 어찌하여 왕께서 하나님의 백성에게 대하여 이같은 생각을 하셨나이까 이 말씀을 하심으로 왕께서 죄 있는 사람 같이 되심은 그 내쫓긴 자를 왕께서 집으로 돌아오게 하지 아니하심이니이다

14 우리는 필경 죽으리니 땅에 쏟아진 물을 다시 담지 못함 같을 것이오나 하나님은 생명을 빼앗지 아니하시고 방책을 베푸사 내쫓긴 자가 하나님께 버린 자가 되지 아니하게 하시나이다

15 이제 내가 와서 내 주 왕께 이 말씀을 여쭙는 것은 백성들이 나를 두렵게 하므로 당신의 여종이 스스로 말하기를 내가 왕께 여쭈오면 혹시 종이 청하는 것을 왕께서 시행하실 것이라

16 왕께서 들으시고 나와 내 아들을 함께 하나님의 기업에서 끊을 자의 손으로부터 주의 종을 구원하시리라 함이니이다

17 당신의 여종이 또 스스로 말하기를 내 주 왕의 말씀이 나의 위로가 되기를 원한다 하였사오니 이는 내 주 왕께서 하나님의 사자 같이 선과 악을 분간하심이니이다 원하건대 왕의 하나님 여호와께서 왕과 같이 계시옵소서

18 왕이 그 여인에게 대답하여 이르되 바라노니 내가 네게 묻는 것을 내게 숨기지 말라 여인이 이르되 내 주 왕은 말씀하옵소서

19 왕이 이르되 이 모든 일에 요압이 너와 함께 하였느냐 하니 여인이 대답하여 이르되 내 주 왕의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하옵나니 내 주 왕의 말씀을 좌로나 우로나 옮길 자가 없으리이다 왕의 종 요압이 내게 명령하였고 그가 이 모든 말을 왕의 여종의 입에 넣어 주었사오니

20 이는 왕의 종 요압이 이 일의 형편을 바꾸려 하여 이렇게 함이니이다 내 주 왕의 지혜는 하나님의 사자의 지혜와 같아서 땅에 있는 일을 다 아시나이다 하니라

21 왕이 요압에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 허락하였으니 가서 청년 압살롬을 데려오라 하니라

22 요압이 땅에 엎드려 절하고 왕을 위하여 복을 빌고 요압이 이르되 내 주 왕이여 종의 구함을 왕이 허락하시니 종이 왕 앞에서 은혜 입은 줄을 오늘 아나이다 하고

23 요압이 일어나 그술로 가서 압살롬을 데리고 예루살렘으로 오니

24 왕이 이르되 그를 그의 집으로 물러가게 하여 내 얼굴을 볼 수 없게 하라 하매 압살롬이 자기 집으로 돌아가고 왕의 얼굴을 보지 못하니라

다윗이 압살롬과 화해하다

25 온 이스라엘 가운데에서 압살롬 같이 아름다움으로 크게 칭찬 받는 자가 없었으니 그는 발바닥부터 정수리까지 흠이 없음이라

26 그의 머리털이 무거우므로 연말마다 깎았으며 그의 머리 털을 깎을 때에 그것을 달아본즉 그의 머리털이 왕의 저울로 이백 세겔이었더라

27 압살롬이 아들 셋과 딸 하나를 낳았는데 딸의 이름은 다말이라 그는 얼굴이 아름다운 여자더라

28 압살롬이 이태 동안 예루살렘에 있으되 왕의 얼굴을 보지 못하였으므로

29 압살롬이 요압을 왕께 보내려 하여 압살롬이 요압에게 사람을 보내 부르되 그에게 오지 아니하고 또 다시 그에게 보내되 오지 아니하는지라

30 압살롬이 자기의 종들에게 이르되 보라 요압의 밭이 내 밭 근처에 있고 거기 보리가 있으니 가서 불을 지르라 하니라 압살롬의 종들이 그 밭에 불을 질렀더니

31 요압이 일어나 압살롬의 집으로 가서 그에게 이르되 어찌하여 네 종들이 내 밭에 불을 질렀느냐 하니

32 압살롬이 요압에게 대답하되 내가 일찍이 사람을 네게 보내 너를 이리로 오라고 청한 것은 내가 너를 왕께 보내 아뢰게 하기를 어찌하여 내가 그술에서 돌아오게 되었나이까 이 때까지 거기에 있는 것이 내게 나았으리이다 하려 함이로라 이제는 네가 나로 하여금 왕의 얼굴을 볼 수 있게 하라 내가 만일 죄가 있으면 왕이 나를 죽이시는 것이 옳으니라 하는지라

33 요압이 왕께 나아가서 그에게 아뢰매 왕이 압살롬을 부르니 그가 왕께 나아가 그 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대어 그에게 절하매 왕이 압살롬과 입을 맞추니라

Conociendo Joab hijo de Sarvia que el corazón del rey se inclinaba por Absalón, 2. envió Joab a Tecoa, y tomó de allá una mujer astuta, y le dijo: Yo te ruego que finjas estar de duelo, y te vistas ropas de luto, y no te unjas con óleo, sino preséntate como una mujer que desde mucho tiempo está de duelo por algún muerto; 3. y entrarás al rey, y le hablarás de esta manera. Y puso Joab las palabras en su boca. 4. Entró, pues, aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose en tierra sobre su rostro, hizo reverencia, y dijo: ¡Socorro, oh rey! 5. El rey le dijo: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Yo a la verdad soy una mujer viuda y mi marido ha muerto. 6. Tu sierva tenía dos hijos, y los dos riñeron en el campo; y no habiendo quien los separase, hirió el uno al otro, y lo mató. 7. Y he aquí toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo: Entrega al que mató a su hermano, para que le hagamos morir por la vida de su hermano a quien él mató, y matemos también al heredero. Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, no dejando a mi marido nombre ni reliquia sobre la tierra. 8. Entonces el rey dijo a la mujer: Vete a tu casa, y yo daré órdenes con respecto a ti. 9. Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: Rey señor mío, la maldad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre; mas el rey y su trono sean sin culpa. 10. Y el rey dijo: Al que hablare contra ti, tráelo a mí, y no te tocará más. 11. Dijo ella entonces: Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová tu Dios, para que el vengador de la sangre no aumente el daño, y no destruya a mi hijo. Y él respondió: Vive Jehová, que no caerá ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo en tierra. 12. Y la mujer dijo: Te ruego que permitas que tu sierva hable una palabra a mi señor el rey. Y él dijo: Habla. 13. Entonces la mujer dijo: ¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tú cosa semejante contra el pueblo de Dios? Porque hablando el rey esta palabra, se hace culpable él mismo, por cuanto el rey no hace volver a su desterrado. 14. Porque de cierto morimos, y somos como aguas derramadas por tierra, que no pueden volver a recogerse; ni Dios quita la vida, sino que provee medios para no alejar de sí al desterrado. 15. Y el haber yo venido ahora para decir esto al rey mi señor, es porque el pueblo me atemorizó; y tu sierva dijo: Hablaré ahora al rey; quizá él hará lo que su sierva diga. 16. Pues el rey oirá, para librar a su sierva de mano del hombre que me quiere destruir a mí y a mi hijo juntamente, de la heredad de Dios. 17. Tu sierva, pues, dice: Sea ahora de consuelo la respuesta de mi señor el rey, pues que mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Así Jehová tu Dios sea contigo. 18. Entonces David respondió y dijo a la mujer: Yo te ruego que no me encubras nada de lo que yo te preguntare. Y la mujer dijo: Hable mi señor el rey. 19. Y el rey dijo: ¿No anda la mano de Joab contigo en todas estas cosas? La mujer respondió y dijo: Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no hay que apartarse a derecha ni a izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado; porque tu siervo Joab, él me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras. 20. Para mudar el aspecto de las cosas Joab tu siervo ha hecho esto; pero mi señor es sabio conforme a la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer lo que hay en la tierra. 21. Entonces el rey dijo a Joab: He aquí yo hago esto; ve, y haz volver al joven Absalón. 22. Y Joab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro e hizo reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo: Hoy ha entendido tu siervo que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, rey señor mío, pues ha hecho el rey lo que su siervo ha dicho. 23. Se levantó luego Joab y fue a Gesur, y trajo a Absalón a Jerusalén. 24. Mas el rey dijo: Váyase a su casa, y no vea mi rostro. Y volvió Absalón a su casa, y no vio el rostro del rey. 25. Y no había en todo Israel ninguno tan alabado por su hermosura como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta su coronilla no había en él defecto. 26. Cuando se cortaba el cabello (lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia, y por eso se lo cortaba), pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos de peso real. 27. Y le nacieron a Absalón tres hijos, y una hija que se llamó Tamar, la cual era mujer de hermoso semblante. 28. Y estuvo Absalón por espacio de dos años en Jerusalén, y no vio el rostro del rey. 29. Y mandó Absalón por Joab, para enviarlo al rey, pero él no quiso venir; y envió aun por segunda vez, y no quiso venir. 30. Entonces dijo a sus siervos: Mirad, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y tiene allí cebada; id y prendedle fuego. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo. 31. Entonces se levantó Joab y vino a casa de Absalón, y le dijo: ¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus siervos a mi campo? 32. Y Absalón respondió a Joab: He aquí yo he enviado por ti, diciendo que vinieses acá, con el fin de enviarte al rey para decirle: ¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me fuera estar aún allá. Vea yo ahora el rostro del rey; y si hay en mí pecado, máteme. 33. Vino, pues, Joab al rey, y se lo hizo saber. Entonces llamó a Absalón, el cual vino al rey, e inclinó su rostro a tierra delante del rey; y el rey besó a Absalón. 2 #Samuel 14 Absalom Returns to Jerusalem 1. Now Joab the son of Zeruiah knew that the king’s heart went out to Absalom. 2. And Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman and said to her, “Pretend to be a mourner and put on mourning garments. Do not anoint yourself with oil, but behave like a woman who has been mourning many days for the dead. 3. Go to the king and speak thus to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth. 4. When the woman of Tekoa came to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and paid homage and said, “Save me, O king.” 5. And the king said to her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, “Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead. 6. And your servant had two sons, and they quarreled with one another in the field. There was no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him. 7. And now the whole clan has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.’ And so they would destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal that is left and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.” 8. Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you.” 9. And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “On me be the guilt, my lord the king, and on my father’s house; let the king and his throne be guiltless.” 10. The king said, “If anyone says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall never touch you again.” 11. Then she said, “Please let the king invoke the Lord your God, that the avenger of blood kill no more, and my son be not destroyed.” He said, “As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.” 12. Then the woman said, “Please let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Speak.” 13. And the woman said, “Why then have you planned such a thing against the people of God? For in giving this decision the king convicts himself, inasmuch as the king does not bring his banished one home again. 14. We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast. 15. Now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid, and your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant. 16. For the king will hear and deliver his servant from the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together from the heritage of God.’ 17. And your servant thought, ‘The word of my lord the king will set me at rest,’ for my lord the king is like the angel of God to discern good and evil. The Lord your God be with you!” 18. Then the king answered the woman, “Do not hide from me anything I ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king speak.” 19. The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered and said, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, one cannot turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has said. It was your servant Joab who commanded me; it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your servant. 20. In order to change the course of things your servant Joab did this. But my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God to know all things that are on the earth.” 21. Then the king said to Joab, “Behold now, I grant this; go, bring back the young man Absalom.” 22. And Joab fell on his face to the ground and paid homage and blessed the king. And Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant.” 23. So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24. And the king said, “Let him dwell apart in his own house; he is not to come into my presence.” So Absalom lived apart in his own house and did not come into the king’s presence. 25. Now in all Israel there was no one so much to be praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. 26. And when he cut the hair of his head (for at the end of every year he used to cut it; when it was heavy on him, he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels by the king’s weight. 27. There were born to Absalom three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar. She was a beautiful woman. 28. So Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, without coming into the king’s presence. 29. Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. And he sent a second time, but Joab would not come. 30. Then he said to his servants, “See, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire. 31. Then Joab arose and went to Absalom at his house and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?” 32. Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent word to you, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to ask, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still.” Now therefore let me go into the presence of the king, and if there is guilt in me, let him put me to death.’” 33. Then Joab went to the king and told him, and he summoned Absalom. So he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king, and the king kissed Absalom.

Joab procura el regreso de Absalón

Conociendo Joab hijo de Sarvia que el corazón del rey se inclinaba por Absalón,
envió Joab a Tecoa, y tomó de allá una mujer astuta, y le dijo: Yo te ruego que finjas estar de duelo, y te vistas ropas de luto, y no te unjas con óleo, sino preséntate como una mujer que desde mucho tiempo está de duelo por algún muerto;
y entrarás al rey, y le hablarás de esta manera. Y puso Joab las palabras en su boca.
Entró, pues, aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose en tierra sobre su rostro, hizo reverencia, y dijo: ¡Socorro, oh rey!
El rey le dijo: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Yo a la verdad soy una mujer viuda y mi marido ha muerto.
Tu sierva tenía dos hijos, y los dos riñeron en el campo; y no habiendo quien los separase, hirió el uno al otro, y lo mató.
Y he aquí toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo: Entrega al que mató a su hermano, para que le hagamos morir por la vida de su hermano a quien él mató, y matemos también al heredero. Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, no dejando a mi marido nombre ni reliquia sobre la tierra.
Entonces el rey dijo a la mujer: Vete a tu casa, y yo daré órdenes con respecto a ti.
Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: Rey señor mío, la maldad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre; mas el rey y su trono sean sin culpa.
Y el rey dijo: Al que hablare contra ti, tráelo a mí, y no te tocará más.
Dijo ella entonces: Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová tu Dios, para que el vengador de la sangre no aumente el daño, y no destruya a mi hijo. Y él respondió: Vive Jehová, que no caerá ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo en tierra.
Y la mujer dijo: Te ruego que permitas que tu sierva hable una palabra a mi señor el rey. Y él dijo: Habla.
Entonces la mujer dijo: ¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tú cosa semejante contra el pueblo de Dios? Porque hablando el rey esta palabra, se hace culpable él mismo, por cuanto el rey no hace volver a su desterrado.
Porque de cierto morimos, y somos como aguas derramadas por tierra, que no pueden volver a recogerse; ni Dios quita la vida, sino que provee medios para no alejar de sí al desterrado.
Y el haber yo venido ahora para decir esto al rey mi señor, es porque el pueblo me atemorizó; y tu sierva dijo: Hablaré ahora al rey; quizá él hará lo que su sierva diga.
Pues el rey oirá, para librar a su sierva de mano del hombre que me quiere destruir a mí y a mi hijo juntamente, de la heredad de Dios.
Tu sierva, pues, dice: Sea ahora de consuelo la respuesta de mi señor el rey, pues que mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Así Jehová tu Dios sea contigo.
Entonces David respondió y dijo a la mujer: Yo te ruego que no me encubras nada de lo que yo te preguntare. Y la mujer dijo: Hable mi señor el rey.
Y el rey dijo: ¿No anda la mano de Joab contigo en todas estas cosas? La mujer respondió y dijo: Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no hay que apartarse a derecha ni a izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado; porque tu siervo Joab, él me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras.
Para mudar el aspecto de las cosas Joab tu siervo ha hecho esto; pero mi señor es sabio conforme a la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer lo que hay en la tierra.
Entonces el rey dijo a Joab: He aquí yo hago esto; ve, y haz volver al joven Absalón.
Y Joab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro e hizo reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo: Hoy ha entendido tu siervo que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, rey señor mío, pues ha hecho el rey lo que su siervo ha dicho.
Se levantó luego Joab y fue a Gesur, y trajo a Absalón a Jerusalén.
Mas el rey dijo: Váyase a su casa, y no vea mi rostro. Y volvió Absalón a su casa, y no vio el rostro del rey.
Y no había en todo Israel ninguno tan alabado por su hermosura como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta su coronilla no había en él defecto.
Cuando se cortaba el cabello (lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia, y por eso se lo cortaba), pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos de peso real.
Y le nacieron a Absalón tres hijos, y una hija que se llamó Tamar, la cual era mujer de hermoso semblante.
Y estuvo Absalón por espacio de dos años en Jerusalén, y no vio el rostro del rey.
Y mandó Absalón por Joab, para enviarlo al rey, pero él no quiso venir; y envió aun por segunda vez, y no quiso venir.
Entonces dijo a sus siervos: Mirad, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y tiene allí cebada; id y prendedle fuego. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo.
Entonces se levantó Joab y vino a casa de Absalón, y le dijo: ¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus siervos a mi campo?
Y Absalón respondió a Joab: He aquí yo he enviado por ti, diciendo que vinieses acá, con el fin de enviarte al rey para decirle: ¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me fuera estar aún allá. Vea yo ahora el rostro del rey; y si hay en mí pecado, máteme.
Vino, pues, Joab al rey, y se lo hizo saber. Entonces llamó a Absalón, el cual vino al rey, e inclinó su rostro a tierra delante del rey; y el rey besó a Absalón.

Absalom Returns to Jerusalem

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah knew that the king’s heart went out to Absalom.
And Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman and said to her, “Pretend to be a mourner and put on mourning garments. Do not anoint yourself with oil, but behave like a woman who has been mourning many days for the dead.
Go to the king and speak thus to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.
When the woman of Tekoa came to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and paid homage and said, “Save me, O king.”
And the king said to her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, “Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.
And your servant had two sons, and they quarreled with one another in the field. There was no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.
And now the whole clan has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.’ And so they would destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal that is left and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”
Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you.”
And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “On me be the guilt, my lord the king, and on my father’s house; let the king and his throne be guiltless.”
The king said, “If anyone says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall never touch you again.”
Then she said, “Please let the king invoke the Lord your God, that the avenger of blood kill no more, and my son be not destroyed.” He said, “As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”
Then the woman said, “Please let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Speak.”
And the woman said, “Why then have you planned such a thing against the people of God? For in giving this decision the king convicts himself, inasmuch as the king does not bring his banished one home again.
We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.
Now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid, and your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.
For the king will hear and deliver his servant from the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together from the heritage of God.’
And your servant thought, ‘The word of my lord the king will set me at rest,’ for my lord the king is like the angel of God to discern good and evil. The Lord your God be with you!”
Then the king answered the woman, “Do not hide from me anything I ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king speak.”
The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered and said, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, one cannot turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has said. It was your servant Joab who commanded me; it was he who put all these words in the mouth of your servant.
In order to change the course of things your servant Joab did this. But my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God to know all things that are on the earth.”
Then the king said to Joab, “Behold now, I grant this; go, bring back the young man Absalom.”
And Joab fell on his face to the ground and paid homage and blessed the king. And Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant.”
So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
And the king said, “Let him dwell apart in his own house; he is not to come into my presence.” So Absalom lived apart in his own house and did not come into the king’s presence.
Now in all Israel there was no one so much to be praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
And when he cut the hair of his head (for at the end of every year he used to cut it; when it was heavy on him, he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels by the king’s weight.
