제 18 장

압살롬이 패하다

1 이에 다윗이 그와 함께 한 백성을 찾아가서 천부장과 백부장을 그들 위에 세우고

2 다윗이 그의 백성을 내보낼새 삼분의 일은 요압의 휘하에, 삼분의 일은 스루야의 아들 요압의 동생 아비새의 휘하에 넘기고 삼분의 일은 가드 사람 잇대의 휘하에 넘기고 왕이 백성에게 이르되 나도 반드시 너희와 함께 나가리라 하니

3 백성들이 이르되 왕은 나가지 마소서 우리가 도망할지라도 그들은 우리에게 마음을 쓰지 아니할 터이요 우리가 절반이나 죽을지라도 우리에게 마음을 쓰지 아니할 터이라 왕은 우리 만 명보다 중하시오니 왕은 성읍에 계시다가 우리를 도우심이 좋으니이다 하니라

4 왕이 그들에게 이르되 너희가 좋게 여기는 대로 내가 행하리라 하고 문 곁에 왕이 서매 모든 백성이 백 명씩 천 명씩 대를 지어 나가는지라

5 왕이 요압과 아비새와 잇대에게 명령하여 이르되 나를 위하여 젊은 압살롬을 너그러이 대우하라 하니 왕이 압살롬을 위하여 모든 군지휘관에게 명령할 때에 백성들이 다 들으니라

6 이에 백성이 이스라엘을 치러 들로 나가서 에브라임 수풀에서 싸우더니

7 거기서 이스라엘 백성이 다윗의 부하들에게 패하매 그 날 그 곳에서 전사자가 많아 이만 명에 이르렀고

8 그 땅에서 사면으로 퍼져 싸웠으므로 그 날에 수풀에서 죽은 자가 칼에 죽은 자보다 많았더라

9 압살롬이 다윗의 부하들과 마주치니라 압살롬이 노새를 탔는데 그 노새가 큰 상수리나무 번성한 가지 아래로 지날 때에 압살롬의 머리가 그 상수리나무에 걸리매 그가 공중과 그 땅 사이에 달리고 그가 탔던 노새는 그 아래로 빠져나간지라

10 한 사람이 보고 요압에게 알려 이르되 내가 보니 압살롬이 상수리나무에 달렸더이다 하니

11 요압이 그 알린 사람에게 이르되 네가 보고 어찌하여 당장에 쳐서 땅에 떨어뜨리지 아니하였느냐 내가 네게 은 열 개와 띠 하나를 주었으리라 하는지라

12 그 사람이 요압에게 대답하되 내가 내 손에 은 천 개를 받는다 할지라도 나는 왕의 아들에게 손을 대지 아니하겠나이다 우리가 들었거니와 왕이 당신과 아비새와 잇대에게 명령하여 이르시기를 삼가 누구든지 젊은 압살롬을 해하지 말라 하셨나이다

13 아무 일도 왕 앞에는 숨길 수 없나니 내가 만일 거역하여 그의 생명을 해하였더라면 당신도 나를 대적하였으리이다 하니

14 요압이 이르되 나는 너와 같이 지체할 수 없다 하고 손에 작은 창 셋을 가지고 가서 상수리나무 가운데서 아직 살아 있는 압살롬의 심장을 찌르니

15 요압의 무기를 든 청년 열 명이 압살롬을 에워싸고 쳐죽이니라

16 요압이 나팔을 불어 백성들에게 그치게 하니 그들이 이스라엘을 추격하지 아니하고 돌아오니라

17 그들이 압살롬을 옮겨다가 수풀 가운데 큰 구멍에 그를 던지고 그 위에 매우 큰 돌무더기를 쌓으니라 온 이스라엘 무리가 각기 장막으로 도망하니라

18 압살롬이 살았을 때에 자기를 위하여 한 비석을 마련하여 세웠으니 이는 그가 자기 이름을 전할 아들이 내게 없다고 말하였음이더라 그러므로 자기 이름을 기념하여 그 비석에 이름을 붙였으며 그 비석이 왕의 골짜기에 있고 이제까지 그것을 압살롬의 기념비라 일컫더라

압살롬의 죽음과 다윗의 울음

19 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 이르되 청하건대 내가 빨리 왕에게 가서 여호와께서 왕의 원수 갚아 주신 소식을 전하게 하소서

20 요압이 그에게 이르되 너는 오늘 소식을 전하는 자가 되지 말고 다른 날에 전할 것이니라 왕의 아들이 죽었나니 네가 오늘 소식을 전하지 못하리라 하고

21 요압이 구스 사람에게 이르되 네가 가서 본 것을 왕께 아뢰라 하매 구스 사람이 요압에게 절하고 달음질하여 가니

22 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 다시 요압에게 이르되 청하건대 아무쪼록 내가 또한 구스 사람의 뒤를 따라 달려가게 하소서 하니 요압이 이르되 내 아들아 너는 왜 달려가려 하느냐 이 소식으로 말미암아서는 너는 상을 받지 못하리라 하되

23 그가 한사코 달려가겠노라 하는지라 요압이 이르되 그리하라 하니 아히마아스가 들길로 달음질하여 구스 사람보다 앞질러가니라

24 때에 다윗이 두 문 사이에 앉아 있더라 파수꾼이 성 문 위층에 올라가서 눈을 들어 보니 어떤 사람이 홀로 달려오는지라

25 파수꾼이 외쳐 왕께 아뢰매 왕이 이르되 그가 만일 혼자면 그의 입에 소식이 있으리라 할 때에 그가 점점 가까이 오니라

26 파수꾼이 본즉 한 사람이 또 달려오는지라 파수꾼이 문지기에게 외쳐 이르되 보라 한 사람이 또 혼자 달려온다 하니 왕이 이르되 그도 소식을 가져오느니라

27 파수꾼이 이르되 내가 보기에는 앞선 사람의 달음질이 사독의 아들 아히마아스의 달음질과 같으니이다 하니 왕이 이르되 그는 좋은 사람이니 좋은 소식을 가져오느니라 하니라

28 아히마아스가 외쳐 왕께 아뢰되 평강하옵소서 하고 왕 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절하며 이르되 왕의 하나님 여호와를 찬양하리로소이다 그의 손을 들어 내 주 왕을 대적하는 자들을 넘겨 주셨나이다 하니

29 왕이 이르되 젊은 압살롬은 잘 있느냐 하니라 아히마아스가 대답하되 요압이 왕의 1)종 나를 보낼 때에 크게 소동하는 것을 보았사오나 무슨 일인지 알지 못하였나이다 하니

30 왕이 이르되 물러나 거기 서 있으라 하매 물러나서 서 있더라

31 구스 사람이 이르러 말하되 내 주 왕께 아뢸 소식이 있나이다 여호와께서 오늘 왕을 대적하던 모든 원수를 갚으셨나이다 하니

32 왕이 구스 사람에게 묻되 젊은 압살롬은 잘 있느냐 구스 사람이 대답하되 내 주 왕의 원수와 일어나서 왕을 대적하는 자들은 다 그 청년과 같이 되기를 원하나이다 하니

33 왕의 마음이 심히 아파 문 위층으로 올라가서 우니라 그가 올라갈 때에 말하기를 내 아들 압살롬아 내 아들 내 아들 압살롬아 차라리 내가 너를 대신하여 죽었더면, 압살롬 내 아들아 내 아들아 하였더라

David, pues, pasó revista al pueblo que tenía consigo, y puso sobre ellos jefes de millares y jefes de centenas. 2. Y envió David al pueblo, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Joab, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Abisai hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y una tercera parte al mando de Itai geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo: Yo también saldré con vosotros. 3. Mas el pueblo dijo: No saldrás; porque si nosotros huyéremos, no harán caso de nosotros; y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros; mas tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros. Será, pues, mejor que tú nos des ayuda desde la ciudad. 4. Entonces el rey les dijo: Yo haré lo que bien os parezca. Y se puso el rey a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento y de mil en mil. 5. Y el rey mandó a Joab, a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo: Tratad benignamente por amor de mí al joven Absalón. Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando dio el rey orden acerca de Absalón a todos los capitanes. 6. Salió, pues, el pueblo al campo contra Israel, y se libró la batalla en el bosque de Efraín. 7. Y allí cayó el pueblo de Israel delante de los siervos de David, y se hizo allí en aquel día una gran matanza de veinte mil hombres. 8. Y la batalla se extendió por todo el país; y fueron más los que destruyó el bosque aquel día, que los que destruyó la espada. 9. Y se encontró Absalón con los siervos de David; e iba Absalón sobre un mulo, y el mulo entró por debajo de las ramas espesas de una gran encina, y se le enredó la cabeza en la encina, y Absalón quedó suspendido entre el cielo y la tierra; y el mulo en que iba pasó delante. 10. Viéndolo uno, avisó a Joab, diciendo: He aquí que he visto a Absalón colgado de una encina. 11. Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva: Y viéndolo tú, ¿por qué no le mataste luego allí echándole a tierra? Me hubiera placido darte diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte. 12. El hombre dijo a Joab: Aunque me pesaras mil siclos de plata, no extendería yo mi mano contra el hijo del rey; porque nosotros oímos cuando el rey te mandó a ti y a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo: Mirad que ninguno toque al joven Absalón. 13. Por otra parte, habría yo hecho traición contra mi vida, pues que al rey nada se le esconde, y tú mismo estarías en contra. 14. Y respondió Joab: No malgastaré mi tiempo contigo. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, quien estaba aún vivo en medio de la encina. 15. Y diez jóvenes escuderos de Joab rodearon e hirieron a Absalón, y acabaron de matarle. 16. Entonces Joab tocó la trompeta, y el pueblo se volvió de seguir a Israel, porque Joab detuvo al pueblo. 17. Tomando después a Absalón, le echaron en un gran hoyo en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un montón muy grande de piedras; y todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda. 18. Y en vida, Absalón había tomado y erigido una columna, la cual está en el valle del rey; porque había dicho: Yo no tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre. Y llamó aquella columna por su nombre, y así se ha llamado Columna de Absalón, hasta hoy. 19. Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc dijo: ¿Correré ahora, y daré al rey las nuevas de que Jehová ha defendido su causa de la mano de sus enemigos? 20. Respondió Joab: Hoy no llevarás las nuevas; las llevarás otro día; no darás hoy la nueva, porque el hijo del rey ha muerto. 21. Y Joab dijo a un etíope: Ve tú, y di al rey lo que has visto. Y el etíope hizo reverencia ante Joab, y corrió. 22. Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc volvió a decir a Joab: Sea como fuere, yo correré ahora tras el etíope. Y Joab dijo: Hijo mío, ¿para qué has de correr tú, si no recibirás premio por las nuevas? 23. Mas él respondió: Sea como fuere, yo correré. Entonces le dijo: Corre. Corrió, pues, Ahimaas por el camino de la llanura, y pasó delante del etíope. 24. Y David estaba sentado entre las dos puertas; y el atalaya había ido al terrado sobre la puerta en el muro, y alzando sus ojos, miró, y vio a uno que corría solo. 25. El atalaya dio luego voces, y lo hizo saber al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si viene solo, buenas nuevas trae. En tanto que él venía acercándose, 26. vio el atalaya a otro que corría; y dio voces el atalaya al portero, diciendo: He aquí otro hombre que corre solo. Y el rey dijo: Este también es mensajero. 27. Y el atalaya volvió a decir: Me parece el correr del primero como el correr de Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc. Y respondió el rey: Ese es hombre de bien, y viene con buenas nuevas. 28. Entonces Ahimaas dijo en alta voz al rey: Paz. Y se inclinó a tierra delante del rey, y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová Dios tuyo, que ha entregado a los hombres que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor el rey. 29. Y el rey dijo: ¿El joven Absalón está bien? Y Ahimaas respondió: Vi yo un gran alboroto cuando envió Joab al siervo del rey y a mí tu siervo; mas no sé qué era. 30. Y el rey dijo: Pasa, y ponte allí. Y él pasó, y se quedó de pie. 31. Luego vino el etíope, y dijo: Reciba nuevas mi señor el rey, que hoy Jehová ha defendido tu causa de la mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti. 32. El rey entonces dijo al etíope: ¿El joven Absalón está bien? Y el etíope respondió: Como aquel joven sean los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levanten contra ti para mal. 33. Entonces el rey se turbó, y subió a la sala de la puerta, y lloró; y yendo, decía así: ¡Hijo mío Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío Absalón! ¡Quién me diera que muriera yo en lugar de ti, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío! 2 #Samuel 18 Absalom Killed 1. Then David mustered the men who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2. And David sent out the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, “I myself will also go out with you.” 3. But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.” 4. The king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands. 5. And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom. 6. So the army went out into the field against Israel, and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. 7. And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the loss there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. 8. The battle spread over the face of all the country, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword. 9. And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. 10. And a certain man saw it and told Joab, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.” 11. Joab said to the man who told him, “What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt.” 12. But the man said to Joab, “Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not reach out my hand against the king’s son, for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘For my sake protect the young man Absalom.’ 13. On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof.” 14. Joab said, “I will not waste time like this with you.” And he took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak. 15. And ten young men, Joab’s armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him and killed him. 16. Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained them. 17. And they took Absalom and threw him into a great pit in the forest and raised over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled every one to his own home. 18. Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar that is in the King’s Valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom’s monument to this day. David Hears of Absalom’s Death 19. Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me run and carry news to the king that the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.” 20. And Joab said to him, “You are not to carry news today. You may carry news another day, but today you shall carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.” 21. Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran. 22. Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, “Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite.” And Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the news?” 23. “Come what may,” he said, “I will run.” So he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite. 24. Now David was sitting between the two gates, and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone. 25. The watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” And he drew nearer and nearer. 26. The watchman saw another man running. And the watchman called to the gate and said, “See, another man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.” 27. The watchman said, “I think the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man and comes with good news.” 28. Then Ahimaaz cried out to the king, “All is well.” And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth and said, “Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king.” 29. And the king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, your servant, I saw a great commotion, but I do not know what it was.” 30. And the king said, “Turn aside and stand here.” So he turned aside and stood still. David’s Grief 31. And behold, the Cushite came, and the Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king! For the Lord has delivered you this day from the hand of all who rose up against you.” 32. The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” And the Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up against you for evil be like that young man.” 33. And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Muerte de Absalón

David, pues, pasó revista al pueblo que tenía consigo, y puso sobre ellos jefes de millares y jefes de centenas.
Y envió David al pueblo, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Joab, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Abisai hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y una tercera parte al mando de Itai geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo: Yo también saldré con vosotros.
Mas el pueblo dijo: No saldrás; porque si nosotros huyéremos, no harán caso de nosotros; y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros; mas tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros. Será, pues, mejor que tú nos des ayuda desde la ciudad.
Entonces el rey les dijo: Yo haré lo que bien os parezca. Y se puso el rey a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento y de mil en mil.
Y el rey mandó a Joab, a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo: Tratad benignamente por amor de mí al joven Absalón. Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando dio el rey orden acerca de Absalón a todos los capitanes.
Salió, pues, el pueblo al campo contra Israel, y se libró la batalla en el bosque de Efraín.
Y allí cayó el pueblo de Israel delante de los siervos de David, y se hizo allí en aquel día una gran matanza de veinte mil hombres.
Y la batalla se extendió por todo el país; y fueron más los que destruyó el bosque aquel día, que los que destruyó la espada.
Y se encontró Absalón con los siervos de David; e iba Absalón sobre un mulo, y el mulo entró por debajo de las ramas espesas de una gran encina, y se le enredó la cabeza en la encina, y Absalón quedó suspendido entre el cielo y la tierra; y el mulo en que iba pasó delante.
Viéndolo uno, avisó a Joab, diciendo: He aquí que he visto a Absalón colgado de una encina.
Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva: Y viéndolo tú, ¿por qué no le mataste luego allí echándole a tierra? Me hubiera placido darte diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte.
El hombre dijo a Joab: Aunque me pesaras mil siclos de plata, no extendería yo mi mano contra el hijo del rey; porque nosotros oímos cuando el rey te mandó a ti y a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo: Mirad que ninguno toque al joven Absalón.
Por otra parte, habría yo hecho traición contra mi vida, pues que al rey nada se le esconde, y tú mismo estarías en contra.
Y respondió Joab: No malgastaré mi tiempo contigo. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, quien estaba aún vivo en medio de la encina.
Y diez jóvenes escuderos de Joab rodearon e hirieron a Absalón, y acabaron de matarle.
Entonces Joab tocó la trompeta, y el pueblo se volvió de seguir a Israel, porque Joab detuvo al pueblo.
Tomando después a Absalón, le echaron en un gran hoyo en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un montón muy grande de piedras; y todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda.
Y en vida, Absalón había tomado y erigido una columna, la cual está en el valle del rey; porque había dicho: Yo no tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre. Y llamó aquella columna por su nombre, y así se ha llamado Columna de Absalón, hasta hoy.
Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc dijo: ¿Correré ahora, y daré al rey las nuevas de que Jehová ha defendido su causa de la mano de sus enemigos?
Respondió Joab: Hoy no llevarás las nuevas; las llevarás otro día; no darás hoy la nueva, porque el hijo del rey ha muerto.
Y Joab dijo a un etíope: Ve tú, y di al rey lo que has visto. Y el etíope hizo reverencia ante Joab, y corrió.
Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc volvió a decir a Joab: Sea como fuere, yo correré ahora tras el etíope. Y Joab dijo: Hijo mío, ¿para qué has de correr tú, si no recibirás premio por las nuevas?
Mas él respondió: Sea como fuere, yo correré. Entonces le dijo: Corre. Corrió, pues, Ahimaas por el camino de la llanura, y pasó delante del etíope.
Y David estaba sentado entre las dos puertas; y el atalaya había ido al terrado sobre la puerta en el muro, y alzando sus ojos, miró, y vio a uno que corría solo.
El atalaya dio luego voces, y lo hizo saber al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si viene solo, buenas nuevas trae. En tanto que él venía acercándose,
vio el atalaya a otro que corría; y dio voces el atalaya al portero, diciendo: He aquí otro hombre que corre solo. Y el rey dijo: Este también es mensajero.
Y el atalaya volvió a decir: Me parece el correr del primero como el correr de Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc. Y respondió el rey: Ese es hombre de bien, y viene con buenas nuevas.
Entonces Ahimaas dijo en alta voz al rey: Paz. Y se inclinó a tierra delante del rey, y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová Dios tuyo, que ha entregado a los hombres que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor el rey.
Y el rey dijo: ¿El joven Absalón está bien? Y Ahimaas respondió: Vi yo un gran alboroto cuando envió Joab al siervo del rey y a mí tu siervo; mas no sé qué era.
Y el rey dijo: Pasa, y ponte allí. Y él pasó, y se quedó de pie.
Luego vino el etíope, y dijo: Reciba nuevas mi señor el rey, que hoy Jehová ha defendido tu causa de la mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.
El rey entonces dijo al etíope: ¿El joven Absalón está bien? Y el etíope respondió: Como aquel joven sean los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levanten contra ti para mal.
Entonces el rey se turbó, y subió a la sala de la puerta, y lloró; y yendo, decía así: ¡Hijo mío Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío Absalón! ¡Quién me diera que muriera yo en lugar de ti, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!

Absalom Killed

Then David mustered the men who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
And David sent out the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, “I myself will also go out with you.”
But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”
The king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.
So the army went out into the field against Israel, and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the loss there was great on that day, twenty thousand men.
The battle spread over the face of all the country, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword.
And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on.
And a certain man saw it and told Joab, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”
Joab said to the man who told him, “What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt.”
But the man said to Joab, “Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not reach out my hand against the king’s son, for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘For my sake protect the young man Absalom.’
On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof.”
Joab said, “I will not waste time like this with you.” And he took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak.
And ten young men, Joab’s armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him and killed him.
Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained them.
And they took Absalom and threw him into a great pit in the forest and raised over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled every one to his own home.
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar that is in the King’s Valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom’s monument to this day.

David Hears of Absalom’s Death
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me run and carry news to the king that the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.”
And Joab said to him, “You are not to carry news today. You may carry news another day, but today you shall carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”
Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran.
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, “Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite.” And Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the news?”
