제 20 장

세바의 반역

1 마침 거기에 불량배 하나가 있으니 그의 이름은 세바인데 베냐민 사람 비그리의 아들이었더라 그가 나팔을 불며 이르되 우리는 다윗과 나눌 분깃이 없으며 이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산이 우리에게 없도다 이스라엘아 각각 장막으로 돌아가라 하매

2 이에 온 이스라엘 사람들이 다윗 따르기를 그치고 올라가 비그리의 아들 세바를 따르나 유다 사람들은 그들의 왕과 합하여 요단에서 예루살렘까지 따르니라

3 다윗이 예루살렘 본궁에 이르러 전에 머물러 왕궁을 지키게 한 후궁 열 명을 잡아 별실에 가두고 먹을 것만 주고 그들에게 관계하지 아니하니 그들이 죽는 날까지 갇혀서 생과부로 지내니라

4 왕이 아마사에게 이르되 너는 나를 위하여 삼 일 내로 유다 사람을 큰 소리로 불러 모으고 너도 여기 있으라 하니라

5 아마사가 유다 사람을 모으러 가더니 왕이 정한 기일에 지체된지라

6 다윗이 이에 아비새에게 이르되 이제 비그리의 아들 세바가 압살롬보다 우리를 더 해하리니 너는 네 주의 부하들을 데리고 그의 뒤를 쫓아가라 그가 견고한 성읍에 들어가 우리들을 피할까 염려하노라 하매

7 요압을 따르는 자들과 그렛 사람들과 블렛 사람들과 모든 용사들이 다 아비새를 따라 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓으려고 예루살렘에서 나와

8 기브온 큰 바위 곁에 이르매 아마사가 맞으러 오니 그 때에 요압이 군복을 입고 띠를 띠고 칼집에 꽂은 칼을 허리에 맸는데 그가 나아갈 때에 칼이 빠져 떨어졌더라

9 요압이 아마사에게 이르되 내 형은 평안하냐 하며 오른손으로 아마사의 수염을 잡고 그와 입을 맞추려는 체하매

10 아마사가 요압의 손에 있는 칼은 주의하지 아니한지라 요압이 칼로 그의 배를 찌르매 그의 창자가 땅에 쏟아지니 그를 다시 치지 아니하여도 죽으니라

요압과 그의 동생 아비새가 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓을새

11 요압의 청년 중 하나가 아마사 곁에 서서 이르되 요압을 좋아하는 자가 누구이며 요압을 따라 다윗을 위하는 자는 누구냐 하니

12 아마사가 길 가운데 피 속에 놓여 있는지라 그 청년이 모든 백성이 서 있는 것을 보고 아마사를 큰길에서부터 밭으로 옮겼으나 거기에 이르는 자도 다 멈추어 서는 것을 보고 옷을 그 위에 덮으니라

13 아마사를 큰길에서 옮겨가매 사람들이 다 요압을 따라 비그리의 아들 세바를 뒤쫓아가니라

14 세바가 이스라엘 모든 지파 가운데 두루 다녀서 아벨과 벧마아가와 베림 온 땅에 이르니 그 무리도 다 모여 그를 따르더라

15 이에 그들이 벧마아가 아벨로 가서 세바를 에우고 그 성읍을 향한 지역 언덕 위에 토성을 쌓고 요압과 함께 한 모든 백성이 성벽을 쳐서 헐고자 하더니

16 그 성읍에서 지혜로운 여인 한 사람이 외쳐 이르되 들을지어다 들을지어다 청하건대 너희는 요압에게 이르기를 이리로 가까이 오라 내가 네게 말하려 하노라 한다 하라

17 요압이 그 여인에게 가까이 가니 여인이 이르되 당신이 요압이니이까 하니 대답하되 그러하다 하니라 여인이 그에게 이르되 여종의 말을 들으소서 하니 대답하되 내가 들으리라 하니라

18 여인이 말하여 이르되 옛 사람들이 흔히 말하기를 아벨에게 가서 물을 것이라 하고 그 일을 끝내었나이다

19 나는 이스라엘의 화평하고 충성된 자 중 하나이거늘 당신이 이스라엘 가운데 어머니 같은 성을 멸하고자 하시는도다 어찌하여 당신이 여호와의 기업을 삼키고자 하시나이까 하니

20 요압이 대답하여 이르되 결단코 그렇지 아니하다 결단코 그렇지 아니하다 삼키거나 멸하거나 하려 함이 아니니

21 그 일이 그러한 것이 아니니라 에브라임 산지 사람 비그리의 아들 그의 이름을 세바라 하는 자가 손을 들어 왕 다윗을 대적하였나니 너희가 그만 내주면 내가 이 성벽에서 떠나가리라 하니라 여인이 요압에게 이르되 그의 머리를 성벽에서 당신에게 내어던지리이다 하고

22 이에 여인이 그의 지혜를 가지고 모든 백성에게 나아가매 그들이 비그리의 아들 세바의 머리를 베어 요압에게 던진지라 이에 요압이 나팔을 불매 무리가 흩어져 성읍에서 물러나 각기 장막으로 돌아가고 요압은 예루살렘으로 돌아와 왕에게 나아가니라

Aconteció que se hallaba allí un hombre perverso que se llamaba Seba hijo de Bicri, hombre de Benjamín, el cual tocó la trompeta, y dijo: No tenemos nosotros parte en David, ni heredad con el hijo de Isaí. ¡Cada uno a su tienda, Israel! 2. Así todos los hombres de Israel abandonaron a David, siguiendo a Seba hijo de Bicri; mas los de Judá siguieron a su rey desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalén. 3. Y luego que llegó David a su casa en Jerusalén, tomó el rey las diez mujeres concubinas que había dejado para guardar la casa, y las puso en reclusión, y les dio alimentos; pero nunca más se llegó a ellas, sino que quedaron encerradas hasta que murieron, en viudez perpetua. 4. Después dijo el rey a Amasa: Convócame a los hombres de Judá para dentro de tres días, y hállate tú aquí presente. 5. Fue, pues, Amasa para convocar a los de Judá; pero se detuvo más del tiempo que le había sido señalado. 6. Y dijo David a Abisai: Seba hijo de Bicri nos hará ahora más daño que Absalón; toma, pues, tú los siervos de tu señor, y ve tras él, no sea que halle para sí ciudades fortificadas, y nos cause dificultad. 7. Entonces salieron en pos de él los hombres de Joab, y los cereteos y peleteos y todos los valientes; salieron de Jerusalén para ir tras Seba hijo de Bicri. 8. Y estando ellos cerca de la piedra grande que está en Gabaón, les salió Amasa al encuentro. Y Joab estaba ceñido de su ropa, y sobre ella tenía pegado a sus lomos el cinto con una daga en su vaina, la cual se le cayó cuando él avanzó. 9. Entonces Joab dijo a Amasa: ¿Te va bien, hermano mío? Y tomó Joab con la diestra la barba de Amasa, para besarlo. 10. Y Amasa no se cuidó de la daga que estaba en la mano de Joab; y este le hirió con ella en la quinta costilla, y derramó sus entrañas por tierra, y cayó muerto sin darle un segundo golpe. Después Joab y su hermano Abisai fueron en persecución de Seba hijo de Bicri. 11. Y uno de los hombres de Joab se paró junto a él, diciendo: Cualquiera que ame a Joab y a David, vaya en pos de Joab. 12. Y Amasa yacía revolcándose en su sangre en mitad del camino; y todo el que pasaba, al verle, se detenía; y viendo aquel hombre que todo el pueblo se paraba, apartó a Amasa del camino al campo, y echó sobre él una vestidura. 13. Luego que fue apartado del camino, pasaron todos los que seguían a Joab, para ir tras Seba hijo de Bicri. 14. Y él pasó por todas las tribus de Israel hasta Abel-bet-maaca y todo Barim; y se juntaron, y lo siguieron también. 15. Y vinieron y lo sitiaron en Abel-bet-maaca, y pusieron baluarte contra la ciudad, y quedó sitiada; y todo el pueblo que estaba con Joab trabajaba por derribar la muralla. 16. Entonces una mujer sabia dio voces en la ciudad, diciendo: Oíd, oíd; os ruego que digáis a Joab que venga acá, para que yo hable con él. 17. Cuando él se acercó a ella, dijo la mujer: ¿Eres tú Joab? Y él respondió: Yo soy. Ella le dijo: Oye las palabras de tu sierva. Y él respondió: Oigo. 18. Entonces volvió ella a hablar, diciendo: Antiguamente solían decir: Quien preguntare, pregunte en Abel; y así concluían cualquier asunto. 19. Yo soy de las pacíficas y fieles de Israel; pero tú procuras destruir una ciudad que es madre en Israel. ¿Por qué destruyes la heredad de Jehová? 20. Joab respondió diciendo: Nunca tal, nunca tal me acontezca, que yo destruya ni deshaga. 21. La cosa no es así: mas un hombre del monte de Efraín, que se llama Seba hijo de Bicri, ha levantado su mano contra el rey David; entregad a ese solamente, y me iré de la ciudad. Y la mujer dijo a Joab: He aquí su cabeza te será arrojada desde el muro. 22. La mujer fue luego a todo el pueblo con su sabiduría; y ellos cortaron la cabeza a Seba hijo de Bicri, y se la arrojaron a Joab. Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!” 2. So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem. 3. And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood. 4. Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” 5. So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him. 6. And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.” 7. And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8. When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out. 9. And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10. But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11. And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.” 12. And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him. 13. When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 14. And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah, and all the Bichrites assembled and followed him in. 15. And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down. 16. Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’” 17. And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18. Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter. 19. I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?” 20. Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy! 21. That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” 22. Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king. 23. Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24. and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 25. and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; 26. and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest.

The Rebellion of Sheba

Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said,
“We have no portion in David,
and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
every man to his tents, O Israel!”
So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.
Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.”
So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him.
And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”
And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out.
And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.
But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.
And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”
And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him.
When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah, and all the Bichrites assembled and followed him in.
And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down.
Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’”
And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”
Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter.
I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?”
Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy!
That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.”
Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;
and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;
and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest.
