#성경정독 #사무엘상15장 #개역개정 #RVR1960 #ESV 사무엘상 15장 공식 사이트 : http://www.prsi.org 본 영상은 CGNTV와 공동체성경읽기(PRS)가 공동기획하여 제작한 영상으로 무단으로 영상을 편집 및 재배포가 금지됩니다. 영상 제공 : CGNTV 제공 #공동체성경읽기#성경 #드라마바이블 #Bible #크리스천 #기독교 #설교 #말씀#성경낭독 제 15 장 사울이 아말렉을 치다 1 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 여호와께서 나를 보내어 왕에게 기름을 부어 그의 백성 이스라엘 위에 왕으로 삼으셨은즉 이제 왕은 여호와의 말씀을 들으소서 2 만군의 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 아말렉이 이스라엘에게 행한 일 곧 애굽에서 나올 때에 길에서 대적한 일로 내가 그들을 벌하노니 3 지금 가서 아말렉을 쳐서 그들의 모든 소유를 남기지 말고 진멸하되 남녀와 소아와 젖 먹는 아이와 우양과 낙타와 나귀를 죽이라 하셨나이다 하니 4 사울이 백성을 소집하고 그들을 들라임에서 세어 보니 보병이 이십만 명이요 유다 사람이 만 명이라 5 사울이 아말렉 성에 이르러 골짜기에 복병시키니라 6 사울이 겐 사람에게 이르되 아말렉 사람 중에서 떠나 가라 그들과 함께 너희를 멸하게 될까 하노라 이스라엘 모든 자손이 애굽에서 올라올 때에 너희가 그들을 선대하였느니라 이에 겐 사람이 아말렉 사람 중에서 떠나니라 7 사울이 하윌라에서부터 애굽 앞 술에 이르기까지 아말렉 사람을 치고 8 아말렉 사람의 왕 아각을 사로잡고 칼날로 그의 모든 백성을 진멸하였으되 9 사울과 백성이 아각과 그의 양과 소의 가장 좋은 것 또는 기름진 것과 어린 양과 모든 좋은 것을 남기고 진멸하기를 즐겨 아니하고 가치 없고 하찮은 것은 진멸하니라 여호와께서 사울을 버리시다 10 여호와의 말씀이 사무엘에게 임하니라 이르시되 11 내가 사울을 왕으로 세운 것을 후회하노니 그가 돌이켜서 나를 따르지 아니하며 내 명령을 행하지 아니하였음이니라 하신지라 사무엘이 근심하여 온 밤을 여호와께 부르짖으니라 12 사무엘이 사울을 만나려고 아침에 일찍이 일어났더니 어떤 사람이 사무엘에게 말하여 이르되 사울이 갈멜에 이르러 자기를 위하여 1)기념비를 세우고 발길을 돌려 길갈로 내려갔다 하는지라 13 사무엘이 사울에게 이른즉 사울이 그에게 이르되 원하건대 당신은 여호와께 복을 받으소서 내가 여호와의 명령을 행하였나이다 하니 14 사무엘이 이르되 그러면 내 귀에 들려오는 이 양의 소리와 내게 들리는 소의 소리는 어찌 됨이니이까 하니라 15 사울이 이르되 그것은 무리가 아말렉 사람에게서 끌어 온 것인데 백성이 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려 하여 양들과 소들 중에서 가장 좋은 것을 남김이요 그 외의 것은 우리가 진멸하였나이다 하는지라 16 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 가만히 계시옵소서 간 밤에 여호와께서 내게 이르신 것을 왕에게 말하리이다 하니 그가 이르되 말씀하소서 17 사무엘이 이르되 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고 18 또 여호와께서 왕을 길로 보내시며 이르시기를 가서 죄인 아말렉 사람을 진멸하되 다 없어지기까지 치라 하셨거늘 19 어찌하여 왕이 여호와의 목소리를 청종하지 아니하고 탈취하기에만 급하여 여호와께서 악하게 여기시는 일을 행하였나이까 20 사울이 사무엘에게 이르되 나는 실로 여호와의 목소리를 청종하여 여호와께서 보내신 길로 가서 아말렉 왕 아각을 끌어 왔고 아말렉 사람들을 진멸하였으나 21 다만 백성이 그 마땅히 멸할 것 중에서 가장 좋은 것으로 길갈에서 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려고 양과 소를 끌어 왔나이다 하는지라 22 사무엘이 이르되 여호와께서 번제와 다른 제사를 그의 목소리를 청종하는 것을 좋아하심 같이 좋아하시겠나이까 순종이 제사보다 낫고 듣는 것이 숫양의 기름보다 나으니 23 이는 거역하는 것은 점치는 죄와 같고 완고한 것은 사신 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같음이라 왕이 여호와의 말씀을 버렸으므로 여호와께서도 왕을 버려 왕이 되지 못하게 하셨나이다 하니 24 사울이 사무엘에게 이르되 내가 범죄하였나이다 내가 여호와의 명령과 당신의 말씀을 어긴 것은 내가 백성을 두려워하여 그들의 말을 청종하였음이니이다 25 청하오니 지금 내 죄를 사하고 나와 함께 돌아가서 나로 하여금 여호와께 경배하게 하소서 하니 26 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 나는 왕과 함께 돌아가지 아니하리니 이는 왕이 여호와의 말씀을 버렸으므로 여호와께서 왕을 버려 이스라엘 왕이 되지 못하게 하셨음이니이다 하고 27 사무엘이 가려고 돌아설 때에 사울이 그의 겉옷자락을 붙잡으매 찢어진지라 28 사무엘이 그에게 이르되 여호와께서 오늘 이스라엘 나라를 왕에게서 떼어 왕보다 나은 왕의 이웃에게 주셨나이다 29 이스라엘의 지존자는 거짓이나 변개함이 없으시니 그는 사람이 아니시므로 결코 변개하지 않으심이니이다 하니 30 사울이 이르되 내가 범죄하였을지라도 이제 청하옵나니 내 백성의 장로들 앞과 이스라엘 앞에서 나를 높이사 나와 함께 돌아가서 내가 당신의 하나님 여호와께 경배하게 하소서 하더라 31 이에 사무엘이 돌이켜 사울을 따라가매 사울이 여호와께 경배하니라 사무엘이 아각을 처형하다 32 사무엘이 이르되 너희는 아말렉 사람의 왕 아각을 내게로 끌어 오라 하였더니 아각이 즐거이 오며 이르되 진실로 사망의 괴로움이 지났도다 하니라 33 사무엘이 이르되 네 칼이 여인들에게 자식이 없게 한 것 같이 여인 중 네 어미에게 자식이 없으리라 하고 그가 길갈에서 여호와 앞에서 아각을 찍어 쪼개니라 사무엘이 다윗에게 기름을 붓다 34 이에 사무엘은 라마로 가고 사울은 사울 기브아 자기의 집으로 올라가니라 35 사무엘이 죽는 날까지 사울을 다시 가서 보지 아니하였으니 이는 그가 사울을 위하여 슬퍼함이었고 여호와께서는 사울을 이스라엘 왕으로 삼으신 것을 후회하셨더라 1 #Samuel 15 Saúl desobedece y es desechado 1. Después Samuel dijo a Saúl: Jehová me envió a que te ungiese por rey sobre su pueblo Israel; ahora, pues, está atento a las palabras de Jehová. 2. Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Yo castigaré lo que hizo Amalec a Israel al oponérsele en el camino cuando subía de Egipto. 3. Ve, pues, y hiere a Amalec, y destruye todo lo que tiene, y no te apiades de él; mata a hombres, mujeres, niños, y aun los de pecho, vacas, ovejas, camellos y asnos. 4. Saúl, pues, convocó al pueblo y les pasó revista en Telaim, doscientos mil de a pie, y diez mil hombres de Judá. 5. Y viniendo Saúl a la ciudad de Amalec, puso emboscada en el valle. 6. Y dijo Saúl a los ceneos: Idos, apartaos y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no os destruya juntamente con ellos; porque vosotros mostrasteis misericordia a todos los hijos de Israel, cuando subían de Egipto. Y se apartaron los ceneos de entre los hijos de Amalec. 7. Y Saúl derrotó a los amalecitas desde Havila hasta llegar a Shur, que está al oriente de Egipto. 8. Y tomó vivo a Agag rey de Amalec, pero a todo el pueblo mató a filo de espada. 9. Y Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron a Agag, y a lo mejor de las ovejas y del ganado mayor, de los animales engordados, de los carneros y de todo lo bueno, y no lo quisieron destruir; mas todo lo que era vil y despreciable destruyeron. 10. Y vino palabra de Jehová a Samuel, diciendo: 11. Me pesa haber puesto por rey a Saúl, porque se ha vuelto de en pos de mí, y no ha cumplido mis palabras. Y se apesadumbró Samuel, y clamó a Jehová toda aquella noche. 12. Madrugó luego Samuel para ir a encontrar a Saúl por la mañana; y fue dado aviso a Samuel, diciendo: Saúl ha venido a Carmel, y he aquí se levantó un monumento, y dio la vuelta, y pasó adelante y descendió a Gilgal. 13. Vino, pues, Samuel a Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová. 14. Samuel entonces dijo: ¿Pues qué balido de ovejas y bramido de vacas es este que yo oigo con mis oídos? 15. Y Saúl respondió: De Amalec los han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas a Jehová tu Dios, pero lo demás lo destruimos. 16. Entonces dijo Samuel a Saúl: Déjame declararte lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche. Y él le respondió: Di. 17. Y dijo Samuel: Aunque eras pequeño en tus propios ojos, ¿no has sido hecho jefe de las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido por rey sobre Israel? 18. Y Jehová te envió en misión y dijo: Ve, destruye a los pecadores de Amalec, y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes. 19. ¿Por qué, pues, no has oído la voz de Jehová, sino que vuelto al botín has hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová? 20. Y Saúl respondió a Samuel: Antes bien he obedecido la voz de Jehová, y fui a la misión que Jehová me envió, y he traído a Agag rey de Amalec, y he destruido a los amalecitas. 21. Mas el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, las primicias del anatema, para ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová tu Dios en Gilgal. 22. Y Samuel dijo: ¿Se complace Jehová tanto en los holocaustos y víctimas, como en que se obedezca a las palabras de Jehová? Ciertamente el obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios, y el prestar atención que la grosura de los carneros. 23. Porque como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión, y como ídolos e idolatría la obstinación. Por cuanto tú desechaste la palabra de Jehová, él también te ha desechado para que no seas rey. 24. Entonces Saúl dijo a Samuel: Yo he pecado; pues he quebrantado el mandamiento de Jehová y tus palabras, porque temí al pueblo y consentí a la voz de ellos. Perdona, pues, ahora mi pecado, 25. y vuelve conmigo para que adore a Jehová. 26. Y Samuel respondió a Saúl: No volveré contigo; porque desechaste la palabra de Jehová, y Jehová te ha desechado para que no seas rey sobre Israel. 27. Y volviéndose Samuel para irse, él se asió de la punta de su manto, y este se rasgó. 28. Entonces Samuel le dijo: Jehová ha rasgado hoy de ti el reino de Israel, y lo ha dado a un prójimo tuyo mejor que tú. 29. Además, el que es la Gloria de Israel no mentirá, ni se arrepentirá, porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta. 30. Y él dijo: Yo he pecado; pero te ruego que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo y delante de Israel, y vuelvas conmigo para que adore a Jehová tu Dios. 31. Y volvió Samuel tras Saúl, y adoró Saúl a Jehová. 32. Después dijo Samuel: Traedme a Agag rey de Amalec. Y Agag vino a él alegremente. Y dijo Agag: Ciertamente ya pasó la amargura de la muerte. 33. Y Samuel dijo: Como tu espada dejó a las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre será sin hijo entre las mujeres. Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal. 34. Se fue luego Samuel a Ramá, y Saúl subió a su casa en Gabaa de Saúl. 35. Y nunca después vio Samuel a Saúl en toda su vida; y Samuel lloraba a Saúl; y Jehová se arrepentía de haber puesto a Saúl por rey sobre Israel. 1 #Samuel 15 The Lord Rejects Saul 1. And Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. 2. Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. 3. Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 4. So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5. And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. 6. Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7. And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 9. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction. 10. The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11. “I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night. 12. And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.” 13. And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14. And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” 15. Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.” 16. Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.” 17. And Samuel said, “Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18. And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19. Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20. And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. 21. But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22. And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 23. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.” 24. Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25. Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26. And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27. As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28. And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29. And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” 30. Then he said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.” 31. So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord. 32. Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” 33. And Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. 34. Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. 35. And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.

제 15 장

사울이 아말렉을 치다

1 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 여호와께서 나를 보내어 왕에게 기름을 부어 그의 백성 이스라엘 위에 왕으로 삼으셨은즉 이제 왕은 여호와의 말씀을 들으소서

2 만군의 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 아말렉이 이스라엘에게 행한 일 곧 애굽에서 나올 때에 길에서 대적한 일로 내가 그들을 벌하노니

3 지금 가서 아말렉을 쳐서 그들의 모든 소유를 남기지 말고 진멸하되 남녀와 소아와 젖 먹는 아이와 우양과 낙타와 나귀를 죽이라 하셨나이다 하니

4 사울이 백성을 소집하고 그들을 들라임에서 세어 보니 보병이 이십만 명이요 유다 사람이 만 명이라

여호와께서 사울을 버리시다

10 여호와의 말씀이 사무엘에게 임하니라 이르시되

11 내가 사울을 왕으로 세운 것을 후회하노니 그가 돌이켜서 나를 따르지 아니하며 내 명령을 행하지 아니하였음이니라 하신지라 사무엘이 근심하여 온 밤을 여호와께 부르짖으니라

33 사무엘이 이르되 네 칼이 여인들에게 자식이 없게 한 것 같이 여인 중 네 어미에게 자식이 없으리라 하고 그가 길갈에서 여호와 앞에서 아각을 찍어 쪼개니라

사무엘이 다윗에게 기름을 붓다

34 이에 사무엘은 라마로 가고 사울은 사울 기브아 자기의 집으로 올라가니라

Saúl desobedece y es desechado

Después Samuel dijo a Saúl: Jehová me envió a que te ungiese por rey sobre su pueblo Israel; ahora, pues, está atento a las palabras de Jehová.
Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Yo castigaré lo que hizo Amalec a Israel al oponérsele en el camino cuando subía de Egipto.
Ve, pues, y hiere a Amalec, y destruye todo lo que tiene, y no te apiades de él; mata a hombres, mujeres, niños, y aun los de pecho, vacas, ovejas, camellos y asnos.
Saúl, pues, convocó al pueblo y les pasó revista en Telaim, doscientos mil de a pie, y diez mil hombres de Judá.
Y viniendo Saúl a la ciudad de Amalec, puso emboscada en el valle.
Y dijo Saúl a los ceneos: Idos, apartaos y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no os destruya juntamente con ellos; porque vosotros mostrasteis misericordia a todos los hijos de Israel, cuando subían de Egipto. Y se apartaron los ceneos de entre los hijos de Amalec.
Y Saúl derrotó a los amalecitas desde Havila hasta llegar a Shur, que está al oriente de Egipto.
Y tomó vivo a Agag rey de Amalec, pero a todo el pueblo mató a filo de espada.
Y Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron a Agag, y a lo mejor de las ovejas y del ganado mayor, de los animales engordados, de los carneros y de todo lo bueno, y no lo quisieron destruir; mas todo lo que era vil y despreciable destruyeron.
Y vino palabra de Jehová a Samuel, diciendo:
Me pesa haber puesto por rey a Saúl, porque se ha vuelto de en pos de mí, y no ha cumplido mis palabras. Y se apesadumbró Samuel, y clamó a Jehová toda aquella noche.
Madrugó luego Samuel para ir a encontrar a Saúl por la mañana; y fue dado aviso a Samuel, diciendo: Saúl ha venido a Carmel, y he aquí se levantó un monumento, y dio la vuelta, y pasó adelante y descendió a Gilgal.
Vino, pues, Samuel a Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová.
Samuel entonces dijo: ¿Pues qué balido de ovejas y bramido de vacas es este que yo oigo con mis oídos?
Y Saúl respondió: De Amalec los han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas a Jehová tu Dios, pero lo demás lo destruimos.
Entonces dijo Samuel a Saúl: Déjame declararte lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche. Y él le respondió: Di.
Y dijo Samuel: Aunque eras pequeño en tus propios ojos, ¿no has sido hecho jefe de las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido por rey sobre Israel?
Y Jehová te envió en misión y dijo: Ve, destruye a los pecadores de Amalec, y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes.
¿Por qué, pues, no has oído la voz de Jehová, sino que vuelto al botín has hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová?
Y Saúl respondió a Samuel: Antes bien he obedecido la voz de Jehová, y fui a la misión que Jehová me envió, y he traído a Agag rey de Amalec, y he destruido a los amalecitas.
Mas el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, las primicias del anatema, para ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová tu Dios en Gilgal.
Y Samuel dijo: ¿Se complace Jehová tanto en los holocaustos y víctimas, como en que se obedezca a las palabras de Jehová? Ciertamente el obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios, y el prestar atención que la grosura de los carneros.
Porque como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión, y como ídolos e idolatría la obstinación. Por cuanto tú desechaste la palabra de Jehová, él también te ha desechado para que no seas rey.
Entonces Saúl dijo a Samuel: Yo he pecado; pues he quebrantado el mandamiento de Jehová y tus palabras, porque temí al pueblo y consentí a la voz de ellos. Perdona, pues, ahora mi pecado,
y vuelve conmigo para que adore a Jehová.
Y Samuel respondió a Saúl: No volveré contigo; porque desechaste la palabra de Jehová, y Jehová te ha desechado para que no seas rey sobre Israel.
Y volviéndose Samuel para irse, él se asió de la punta de su manto, y este se rasgó.
Entonces Samuel le dijo: Jehová ha rasgado hoy de ti el reino de Israel, y lo ha dado a un prójimo tuyo mejor que tú.
Además, el que es la Gloria de Israel no mentirá, ni se arrepentirá, porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta.
Y él dijo: Yo he pecado; pero te ruego que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo y delante de Israel, y vuelvas conmigo para que adore a Jehová tu Dios.
Y volvió Samuel tras Saúl, y adoró Saúl a Jehová.
Después dijo Samuel: Traedme a Agag rey de Amalec. Y Agag vino a él alegremente. Y dijo Agag: Ciertamente ya pasó la amargura de la muerte.
Y Samuel dijo: Como tu espada dejó a las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre será sin hijo entre las mujeres. Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal.
Se fue luego Samuel a Ramá, y Saúl subió a su casa en Gabaa de Saúl.
Y nunca después vio Samuel a Saúl en toda su vida; y Samuel lloraba a Saúl; y Jehová se arrepentía de haber puesto a Saúl por rey sobre Israel.

The Lord Rejects Saul

And Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord.
Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt.
Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah.
And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley.
Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt.
And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword.
But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.
The word of the Lord came to Samuel:
“I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night.
And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.”
And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?”
Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.”
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”
And Samuel said, “Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.
And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’
Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?”
And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction.
But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.”
Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.”
And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.
And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.”
Then he said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.”
So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord.
Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
And Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.
And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.
