제 20 장

여호사밧과 아람의 전쟁

1   그 후에 모압 자손과 암몬 자손들이 1)마온 사람들과 함께 와서 여호사밧을 치고자 한지라

2   어떤 사람이 와서 여호사밧에게 전하여 이르되 큰 무리가 바다 저쪽 아람에서 왕을 치러 오는데 이제 하사손다말 곧 엔게디에 있나이다 하니

3   여호사밧이 두려워하여 여호와께로 낯을 향하여 간구하고 온 유다 백성에게 금식하라 공포하매

4   유다 사람이 여호와께 도우심을 구하려 하여 유다 모든 성읍에서 모여와서 여호와께 간구하더라

5   여호사밧이 여호와의 전 새 뜰 앞에서 유다와 예루살렘의 회중 가운데 서서

6   이르되 우리 조상들의 하나님 여호와여 주는 하늘에서 하나님이 아니시니이까 이방 사람들의 모든 나라를 다스리지 아니하시나이까 주의 손에 권세와 능력이 있사오니 능히 주와 맞설 사람이 없나이다

7   우리 하나님이시여 전에 이 땅 주민을 주의 백성 이스라엘 앞에서 쫓아내시고 그 땅을 주께서 사랑하시는 아브라함의 자손에게 영원히 주지 아니하셨나이까

8   그들이 이 땅에 살면서 주의 이름을 위하여 한 성소를 주를 위해 건축하고 이르기를

9   만일 재앙이나 난리나 견책이나 전염병이나 기근이 우리에게 임하면 주의 이름이 이 성전에 있으니 우리가 이 성전 앞과 주 앞에 서서 이 환난 가운데에서 주께 부르짖은즉 들으시고 구원하시리라 하였나이다

10   옛적에 이스라엘이 애굽 땅에서 나올 때에 암몬 자손과 모압 자손과 세일 산 사람들을 침노하기를 주께서 용납하지 아니하시므로 이에 돌이켜 그들을 떠나고 멸하지 아니하였거늘

11   이제 그들이 우리에게 갚는 것을 보옵소서 그들이 와서 주께서 우리에게 주신 주의 기업에서 우리를 쫓아내고자 하나이다

12   우리 하나님이여 그들을 징벌하지 아니하시나이까 우리를 치러 오는 이 큰 무리를 우리가 대적할 능력이 없고 어떻게 할 줄도 알지 못하옵고 오직 주만 바라보나이다 하고

13   유다 모든 사람들이 그들의 아내와 자녀와 어린이와 더불어 여호와 앞에 섰더라

14   여호와의 영이 회중 가운데에서 레위 사람 야하시엘에게 임하셨으니 그는 아삽 자손 맛다냐의 현손이요 여이엘의 증손이요 브나야의 손자요 스가랴의 아들이더라

15   야하시엘이 이르되 온 유다와 예루살렘 주민과 여호사밧 왕이여 들을지어다 여호와께서 이같이 너희에게 말씀하시기를 너희는 이 큰 무리로 말미암아 두려워하거나 놀라지 말라 이 전쟁은 너희에게 속한 것이 아니요 하나님께 속한 것이니라

16   내일 너희는 그들에게로 내려가라 그들이 시스 고개로 올라올 때에 너희가 골짜기 어귀 여루엘 들 앞에서 그들을 만나려니와

17   이 전쟁에는 너희가 싸울 것이 없나니 대열을 이루고 서서 너희와 함께 한 여호와가 구원하는 것을 보라 유다와 예루살렘아 너희는 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말고 내일 그들을 맞서 나가라 여호와가 너희와 함께 하리라 하셨느니라 하매

18   여호사밧이 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대니 온 유다와 예루살렘 주민들도 여호와 앞에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하고

19   그핫 자손과 고라 자손에게 속한 레위 사람들은 서서 심히 큰 소리로 이스라엘 하나님 여호와를 찬송하니라

20   이에 백성들이 아침에 일찍이 일어나서 드고아 들로 나가니라 나갈 때에 여호사밧이 서서 이르되 유다와 예루살렘 주민들아 내 말을 들을지어다 너희는 너희 하나님 여호와를 신뢰하라 그리하면 견고히 서리라 그의 선지자들을 신뢰하라 그리하면 형통하리라 하고

21   백성과 더불어 의논하고 노래하는 자들을 택하여 거룩한 예복을 입히고 군대 앞에서 행진하며 여호와를 찬송하여 이르기를 여호와께 감사하세 그의 인자하심이 영원하도다 하게 하였더니

22   그 노래와 찬송이 시작될 때에 여호와께서 복병을 두어 유다를 치러 온 암몬 자손과 모압과 세일 산 주민들을 치게 하시므로 그들이 패하였으니

23   곧 암몬과 모압 자손이 일어나 세일 산 주민들을 쳐서 진멸하고 세일 주민들을 멸한 후에는 그들이 서로 쳐죽였더라

24   유다 사람이 들 망대에 이르러 그 무리를 본즉 땅에 엎드러진 시체들뿐이요 한 사람도 피한 자가 없는지라

25   여호사밧과 그의 백성이 가서 적군의 물건을 탈취할새 본즉 그 가운데에 재물과 의복과 보물이 많이 있으므로 각기 탈취하는데 그 물건이 너무 많아 능히 가져갈 수 없을 만큼 많으므로 사흘 동안에 거두어들이고

26   넷째 날에 무리가 2)브라가 골짜기에 모여서 거기서 여호와를 송축한지라 그러므로 오늘날까지 그 곳을 2)브라가 골짜기라 일컫더라

27   유다와 예루살렘 모든 사람이 다시 여호사밧을 선두로 하여 즐겁게 예루살렘으로 돌아왔으니 이는 여호와께서 그들이 그 적군을 이김으로써 즐거워하게 하셨음이라

28   그들이 비파와 수금과 나팔을 합주하고 예루살렘에 이르러 여호와의 전에 나아가니라

29   이방 모든 나라가 여호와께서 이스라엘의 적군을 치셨다 함을 듣고 하나님을 두려워하므로

30   여호사밧의 나라가 태평하였으니 이는 그의 하나님이 사방에서 그들에게 평강을 주셨음이더라

여호사밧의 행적(왕상 22:41-50)

31   여호사밧이 유다의 왕이 되어 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 삼십오 세라 예루살렘에서 이십오 년 동안 다스리니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 아수바라 실히의 딸이더라

32   여호사밧이 그의 아버지 아사의 길로 행하여 돌이켜 떠나지 아니하고 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하였으나

33   산당만은 철거하지 아니하였으므로 백성이 여전히 마음을 정하여 그들의 조상들의 하나님께로 돌아오지 아니하였더라

34   이 외에 여호사밧의 시종 행적은 하나니의 아들 예후의 글에 다 기록되었고 그 글은 이스라엘 열왕기에 올랐더라

35   유다 왕 여호사밧이 나중에 이스라엘 왕 아하시야와 교제하였는데 아하시야는 심히 악을 행하는 자였더라

36   두 왕이 서로 연합하고 배를 만들어 다시스로 보내고자 하여 에시온게벨에서 배를 만들었더니

37   마레사 사람 도다와후의 아들 엘리에셀이 여호사밧을 향하여 예언하여 이르되 왕이 아하시야와 교제하므로 여호와께서 왕이 지은 것들을 파하시리라 하더니 이에 그 배들이 부서져서 다시스로 가지 못하였더라

Victoria sobre Moab y Amón

1Pasadas estas cosas, aconteció que los hijos de Moab y de Amón, y con ellos otros de los amonitas, vinieron contra Josafat a la guerra. 2Y acudieron algunos y dieron aviso a Josafat, diciendo: Contra ti viene una gran multitud del otro lado del mar, y de Siria; y he aquí están en Hazezon-tamar, que es En-gadi. 3Entonces él tuvo temor; y Josafat humilló su rostro para consultar a Jehová, e hizo pregonar ayuno a todo Judá. 4Y se reunieron los de Judá para pedir socorro a Jehová; y también de todas las ciudades de Judá vinieron a pedir ayuda a Jehová.

5Entonces Josafat se puso en pie en la asamblea de Judá y de Jerusalén, en la casa de Jehová, delante del atrio nuevo; 6y dijo: Jehová Dios de nuestros padres, ¿no eres tú Dios en los cielos, y tienes dominio sobre todos los reinos de las naciones? ¿No está en tu mano tal fuerza y poder, que no hay quien te resista? 7Dios nuestro, ¿no echaste tú los moradores de esta tierra delante de tu pueblo Israel, y la diste a la descendencia de Abraham tu amigo para siempre? 8Y ellos han habitado en ella, y te han edificado en ella santuario a tu nombre, diciendo: 9Si mal viniere sobre nosotros, o espada de castigo, o pestilencia, o hambre, nos presentaremos delante de esta casa, y delante de ti (porque tu nombre está en esta casa), y a causa de nuestras tribulaciones clamaremos a ti, y tú nos oirás y salvarás. 10Ahora, pues, he aquí los hijos de Amón y de Moab, y los del monte de Seir, a cuya tierra no quisiste que pasase Israel cuando venía de la tierra de Egipto, sino que se apartase de ellos, y no los destruyese; 11he aquí ellos nos dan el pago viniendo a arrojarnos de la heredad que tú nos diste en posesión. 12¡Oh Dios nuestro! ¿no los juzgarás tú? Porque en nosotros no hay fuerza contra tan grande multitud que viene contra nosotros; no sabemos qué hacer, y a ti volvemos nuestros ojos.

13Y todo Judá estaba en pie delante de Jehová, con sus niños y sus mujeres y sus hijos. 14Y estaba allí Jahaziel hijo de Zacarías, hijo de Benaía, hijo de Jeiel, hijo de Matanías, levita de los hijos de Asaf, sobre el cual vino el Espíritu de Jehová en medio de la reunión; 15y dijo: Oíd, Judá todo, y vosotros moradores de Jerusalén, y tú, rey Josafat. Jehová os dice así: No temáis ni os amedrentéis delante de esta multitud tan grande, porque no es vuestra la guerra, sino de Dios. 16Mañana descenderéis contra ellos; he aquí que ellos subirán por la cuesta de Sis, y los hallaréis junto al arroyo, antes del desierto de Jeruel. 17No habrá para qué peleéis vosotros en este caso; paraos, estad quietos, y ved la salvación de Jehová con vosotros. Oh Judá y Jerusalén, no temáis ni desmayéis; salid mañana contra ellos, porque Jehová estará con vosotros.

18Entonces Josafat se inclinó rostro a tierra, y asimismo todo Judá y los moradores de Jerusalén se postraron delante de Jehová, y adoraron a Jehová. 19Y se levantaron los levitas de los hijos de Coat y de los hijos de Coré, para alabar a Jehová el Dios de Israel con fuerte y alta voz.

20Y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, salieron al desierto de Tecoa. Y mientras ellos salían, Josafat, estando en pie, dijo: Oídme, Judá y moradores de Jerusalén. Creed en Jehová vuestro Dios, y estaréis seguros; creed a sus profetas, y seréis prosperados. 21Y habido consejo con el pueblo, puso a algunos que cantasen y alabasen a Jehová, vestidos de ornamentos sagrados, mientras salía la gente armada, y que dijesen: Glorificad a Jehová, porque su misericordia es para siempre. 22Y cuando comenzaron a entonar cantos de alabanza, Jehová puso contra los hijos de Amón, de Moab y del monte de Seir, las emboscadas de ellos mismos que venían contra Judá, y se mataron los unos a los otros. 23Porque los hijos de Amón y Moab se levantaron contra los del monte de Seir para matarlos y destruirlos; y cuando hubieron acabado con los del monte de Seir, cada cual ayudó a la destrucción de su compañero.

24Y luego que vino Judá a la torre del desierto, miraron hacia la multitud, y he aquí yacían ellos en tierra muertos, pues ninguno había escapado. 25Viniendo entonces Josafat y su pueblo a despojarlos, hallaron entre los cadáveres muchas riquezas, así vestidos como alhajas preciosas, que tomaron para sí, tantos, que no los podían llevar; tres días estuvieron recogiendo el botín, porque era mucho. 26Y al cuarto día se juntaron en el valle de Beraca; porque allí bendijeron a Jehová, y por esto llamaron el nombre de aquel paraje el valle de Beraca, hasta hoy. 27Y todo Judá y los de Jerusalén, y Josafat a la cabeza de ellos, volvieron para regresar a Jerusalén gozosos, porque Jehová les había dado gozo librándolos de sus enemigos. 28Y vinieron a Jerusalén con salterios, arpas y trompetas, a la casa de Jehová. 29Y el pavor de Dios cayó sobre todos los reinos de aquella tierra, cuando oyeron que Jehová había peleado contra los enemigos de Israel. 30Y el reino de Josafat tuvo paz, porque su Dios le dio paz por todas partes.

Resumen del reinado de Josafat

(1 R. 22.41-50)

31Así reinó Josafat sobre Judá; de treinta y cinco años era cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veinticinco años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Azuba, hija de Silhi. 32Y anduvo en el camino de Asa su padre, sin apartarse de él, haciendo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová. 33Con todo eso, los lugares altos no fueron quitados; pues el pueblo aún no había enderezado su corazón al Dios de sus padres.

34Los demás hechos de Josafat, primeros y postreros, he aquí están escritos en las palabras de Jehú hijo de Hanani, del cual se hace mención en el libro de los reyes de Israel.

35Pasadas estas cosas, Josafat rey de Judá trabó amistad con Ocozías rey de Israel, el cual era dado a la impiedad, 36e hizo con él compañía para construir naves que fuesen a Tarsis; y construyeron las naves en Ezión-geber. 37Entonces Eliezer hijo de Dodava, de Maresa, profetizó contra Josafat, diciendo: Por cuanto has hecho compañía con Ocozías, Jehová destruirá tus obras. Y las naves se rompieron, y no pudieron ir a Tarsis.

Jehoshaphat’s Prayer

1After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. 2Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, Engedi). 3Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4And Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

5And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, 6and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. 7Did you not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 8And they have lived in it and have built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, saying, 9‘If disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and before you—for your name is in this house—and cry out to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 10And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy— 11behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. 12O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

13Meanwhile all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15And he said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s. 16Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. 17You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.”

18Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.” 21And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say,

“Give thanks to the Lord,

for his steadfast love endures forever.”

22And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. 23For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another.

The Lord Delivers Judah

24When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the horde, and behold, there were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped. 25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their spoil, they found among them, in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. 26On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, for there they blessed the Lord. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Beracah to this day. 27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies. 28They came to Jerusalem with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of the Lord. 29And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.

31 Thus Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32He walked in the way of Asa his father and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. 33The high places, however, were not taken away; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers.

34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, are written in the chronicles of Jehu the son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

The End of Jehoshaphat’s Reign

35 After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly. 36He joined him in building ships to go to Tarshish, and they built the ships in Ezion-geber. 37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have joined with Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy what you have made.” And the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish.
