제 12 장

북쪽 지파들의 배반(대하 10:1-19)

1 르호보암이 세겜으로 갔으니 이는 온 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 삼고자 하여 세겜에 이르렀음이더라

2 느밧의 아들 여로보암이 전에 솔로몬 왕의 얼굴을 피하여 애굽으로 도망하여 있었더니 이제 그 소문을 듣고 여전히 애굽에 있는 중에

3 무리가 사람을 보내 그를 불렀더라 여로보암과 이스라엘의 온 회중이 와서 르호보암에게 말하여 이르되

4 왕의 아버지가 우리의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 왕은 이제 왕의 아버지가 우리에게 시킨 고역과 메운 무거운 멍에를 가볍게 하소서 그리하시면 우리가 왕을 섬기겠나이다

5 르호보암이 대답하되 갔다가 삼 일 후에 다시 내게로 오라 하매 백성이 가니라

6 르호보암 왕이 그의 아버지 솔로몬의 생전에 그 앞에 모셨던 노인들과 의논하여 이르되 너희는 어떻게 충고하여 이 백성에게 대답하게 하겠느냐

7 대답하여 이르되 왕이 만일 오늘 이 백성을 섬기는 자가 되어 그들을 섬기고 좋은 말로 대답하여 이르시면 그들이 영원히 왕의 종이 되리이다 하나

8 왕이 노인들이 자문하는 것을 버리고 자기 앞에 모셔 있는 자기와 함께 자라난 어린 사람들과 의논하여

9 이르되 너희는 어떻게 자문하여 이 백성에게 대답하게 하겠느냐 백성이 내게 말하기를 왕의 아버지가 우리에게 메운 멍에를 가볍게 하라 하였느니라

10 함께 자라난 소년들이 왕께 아뢰어 이르되 이 백성들이 왕께 아뢰기를 왕의 부친이 우리의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 왕은 우리를 위하여 가볍게 하라 하였은즉 왕은 대답하기를 내 새끼 손가락이 내 아버지의 허리보다 굵으니

11 내 아버지께서 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 메게 하였으나 이제 나는 너희의 멍에를 더욱 무겁게 할지라 내 아버지는 채찍으로 너희를 징계하였으나 나는 전갈 채찍으로 너희를 징계하리라 하소서

12 삼 일 만에 여로보암과 모든 백성이 르호보암에게 나아왔으니 이는 왕이 명령하여 이르기를 삼 일 만에 내게로 다시 오라 하였음이라

13 왕이 포학한 말로 백성에게 대답할새 노인의 자문을 버리고

14 어린 사람들의 자문을 따라 그들에게 말하여 이르되 내 아버지는 너희의 멍에를 무겁게 하였으나 나는 너희의 멍에를 더욱 무겁게 할지라 내 아버지는 채찍으로 너희를 징계하였으나 나는 전갈 채찍으로 너희를 징치하리라 하니라

15 왕이 이같이 백성의 말을 듣지 아니하였으니 이 일은 여호와께로 말미암아 난 것이라 여호와께서 전에 실로 사람 아히야로 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 하신 말씀을 이루게 하심이더라

16 온 이스라엘이 자기들의 말을 왕이 듣지 아니함을 보고 왕에게 대답하여 이르되 우리가 다윗과 무슨 관계가 있느냐 이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산이 없도다 이스라엘아 너희의 장막으로 돌아가라 다윗이여 이제 너는 네 집이나 돌아보라 하고 이스라엘이 그 장막으로 돌아가니라

17 그러나 유다 성읍들에 사는 이스라엘 자손에게는 르호보암이 그들의 왕이 되었더라

18 르호보암 왕이 역군의 감독 아도람을 보냈더니 온 이스라엘이 그를 돌로 쳐죽인지라 르호보암 왕이 급히 수레에 올라 예루살렘으로 도망하였더라

19 이에 이스라엘이 다윗의 집을 배반하여 오늘까지 이르렀더라

20 온 이스라엘이 여로보암이 돌아왔다 함을 듣고 사람을 보내 그를 공회로 청하여 온 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼았으니 유다 지파 외에는 다윗의 집을 따르는 자가 없으니라

스마야가 여호와의 말씀을 전하다(대하 11:1-4)

21 르호보암이 예루살렘에 이르러 유다 온 족속과 베냐민 지파를 모으니 택한 용사가 십팔만 명이라 이스라엘 족속과 싸워 나라를 회복하여 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암에게 돌리려 하더니

22 하나님의 말씀이 하나님의 사람 스마야에게 임하여 이르시되

23 솔로몬의 아들 유다 왕 르호보암과 유다와 베냐민 온 족속과 또 그 남은 백성에게 말하여 이르기를

24 여호와의 말씀이 너희는 올라가지 말라 너희 형제 이스라엘 자손과 싸우지 말고 각기 집으로 돌아가라 이 일이 나로 말미암아 난 것이라 하셨다 하라 하신지라 그들이 여호와의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀을 따라 돌아갔더라

여로보암이 금송아지를 만들다

25 여로보암이 에브라임 산지에 세겜을 건축하고 거기서 살며 또 거기서 나가서 부느엘을 건축하고

26 그의 마음에 스스로 이르기를 나라가 이제 다윗의 집으로 돌아가리로다

27 만일 이 백성이 예루살렘에 있는 여호와의 성전에 제사를 드리고자 하여 올라가면 이 백성의 마음이 유다 왕 된 그들의 주 르호보암에게로 돌아가서 나를 죽이고 유다의 왕 르호보암에게로 돌아가리로다 하고

28 이에 계획하고 두 금송아지를 만들고 무리에게 말하기를 너희가 다시는 예루살렘에 올라갈 것이 없도다 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 올린 너희의 신들이라 하고

29 하나는 벧엘에 두고 하나는 단에 둔지라

30 이 일이 죄가 되었으니 이는 백성들이 단까지 가서 그 하나에게 경배함이더라

31 그가 또 산당들을 짓고 레위 자손 아닌 보통 백성으로 제사장을 삼고

32 여덟째 달 곧 그 달 열다섯째 날로 절기를 정하여 유다의 절기와 비슷하게 하고 제단에 올라가되 벧엘에서 그와 같이 행하여 그가 만든 송아지에게 제사를 드렸으며 그가 지은 산당의 제사장을 벧엘에서 세웠더라

33 그가 자기 마음대로 정한 달 곧 여덟째 달 열다섯째 날로 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 절기로 정하고 벧엘에 쌓은 제단에 올라가서 분향하였더라

Roboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había venido a Siquem para hacerle rey. 2. Y aconteció que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto, 3. enviaron a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo: 4. Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora disminuye tú algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos. 5. Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue. 6. Entonces el rey Roboam pidió consejo de los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo? 7. Y ellos le hablaron diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndoles buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre. 8. Pero él dejó el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado, y pidió consejo de los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él. 9. Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros? 10. Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú disminúyenos algo; así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre. 11. Ahora, pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones. 12. Al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam, según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día. 13. Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado; 14. y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones. 15. Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat. 16. Cuando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondió estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, a tus tiendas! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus tiendas. 17. Pero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá. 18. Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero lo apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subirse en un carro y huir a Jerusalén. 19. Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy. 20. Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa, porque esto lo he hecho yo. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron y se fueron, conforme a la palabra de Jehová. El pecado de Jeroboam 25. Entonces reedificó Jeroboam a Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó a Penuel. 26. Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David, 27. si este pueblo subiere a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Jehová en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se volverán a Roboam rey de Judá. 28. Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Bastante habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto. 29. Y puso uno en Bet-el, y el otro en Dan. 30. Y esto fue causa de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante de uno hasta Dan. 31. Hizo también casas sobre los lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre el pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví. 32. Entonces instituyó Jeroboam fiesta solemne en el mes octavo, a los quince días del mes, conforme a la fiesta solemne que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Bet-el, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Bet-el sacerdotes para los lugares altos que él había fabricado. 33. Sacrificó, pues, sobre el altar que él había hecho en Bet-el, a los quince días del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su propio corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso. 1 #Kings 12 Rehoboam’s Folly 1. Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2. And as soon as Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt. 3. And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, 4. “Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.” 5. He said to them, “Go away for three days, then come again to me.” So the people went away. 6. Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” 7. And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.” 8. But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. 9. And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?” 10. And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs. 11. And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’” 12. So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.” 13. And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him, 14. he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15. So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfill his word, which the Lord spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. The Kingdom Divided 16. And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents. 17. But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. 18. Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. 20. And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only. 21. When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22. But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: 23. “Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24. ‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord. Jeroboam’s Golden Calves 25. Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And he went out from there and built Penuel. 26. And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David. 27. If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28. So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 29. And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 30. Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one. 31. He also made temples on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites. 32. And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. 33. He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart. And he instituted a feast for the people of Israel and went up to the altar to make offerings.

Y aconteció que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto,
enviaron a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:
Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora disminuye tú algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.
Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue.
Entonces el rey Roboam pidió consejo de los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?
Y ellos le hablaron diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndoles buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre.
Pero él dejó el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado, y pidió consejo de los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él.
Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú disminúyenos algo; así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
Ahora, pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.
Al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam, según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.
Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado;
y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.
Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.
Cuando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondió estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, a tus tiendas! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus tiendas.
Pero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.
Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero lo apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subirse en un carro y huir a Jerusalén.
Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.
Y aconteció que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron a llamarle a la congregación, y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese la casa de David, sino solo la tribu de Judá.
Y cuando Roboam vino a Jerusalén, reunió a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres, guerreros escogidos, con el fin de hacer guerra a la casa de Israel, y hacer volver el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.
Pero vino palabra de Jehová a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo:
Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, diciendo:
Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa, porque esto lo he hecho yo. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron y se fueron, conforme a la palabra de Jehová.

El pecado de Jeroboam
Entonces reedificó Jeroboam a Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó a Penuel.
Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David,
si este pueblo subiere a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Jehová en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se volverán a Roboam rey de Judá.
Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Bastante habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.
Y puso uno en Bet-el, y el otro en Dan.
Y esto fue causa de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante de uno hasta Dan.
Hizo también casas sobre los lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre el pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.
Entonces instituyó Jeroboam fiesta solemne en el mes octavo, a los quince días del mes, conforme a la fiesta solemne que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Bet-el, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Bet-el sacerdotes para los lugares altos que él había fabricado.
Sacrificó, pues, sobre el altar que él había hecho en Bet-el, a los quince días del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su propio corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.

Rehoboam’s Folly

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
And as soon as Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt.
And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam,
“Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.”
He said to them, “Go away for three days, then come again to me.” So the people went away.
Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”
And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.”
But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.
And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?”
And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs.
And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.”
And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him,
he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”
So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfill his word, which the Lord spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

The Kingdom Divided
And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents.
But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah.
Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only.
When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
“Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,
‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord.

Jeroboam’s Golden Calves
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And he went out from there and built Penuel.
And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David.
If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one.
He also made temples on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites.
And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.
He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart. And he instituted a feast for the people of Israel and went up to the altar to make offerings.
