제 13 장

벧엘 제단 규탄

1 보라 그 때에 하나님의 사람이 여호와의 말씀으로 말미암아 유다에서부터 벧엘에 이르니 마침 여로보암이 제단 곁에 서서 분향하는지라

2 하나님의 사람이 제단을 향하여 여호와의 말씀으로 외쳐 이르되 제단아 제단아 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 다윗의 집에 요시야라 이름하는 아들을 낳으리니 그가 네 위에 분향하는 산당 제사장을 네 위에서 제물로 바칠 것이요 또 사람의 뼈를 네 위에서 사르리라 하셨느니라 하고

3 그 날에 그가 징조를 들어 이르되 이는 여호와께서 말씀하신 징조라 제단이 갈라지며 그 위에 있는 재가 쏟아지리라 하매

4 여로보암 왕이 하나님의 사람이 벧엘에 있는 제단을 향하여 외쳐 말함을 들을 때에 제단에서 손을 펴며 그를 잡으라 하더라 그를 향하여 편 손이 말라 다시 거두지 못하며

5 하나님의 사람이 여호와의 말씀으로 보인 징조대로 제단이 갈라지며 재가 제단에서 쏟아진지라

6 왕이 하나님의 사람에게 말하여 이르되 청하건대 너는 나를 위하여 네 하나님 여호와께 은혜를 구하여 내 손이 다시 성하게 기도하라 하나님의 사람이 여호와께 은혜를 구하니 왕의 손이 다시 성하여 전과 같이 되니라

7 왕이 하나님의 사람에게 이르되 나와 함께 집에 가서 쉬라 내가 네게 예물을 주리라

8 하나님의 사람이 왕께 대답하되 왕께서 왕의 집 절반을 내게 준다 할지라도 나는 왕과 함께 들어가지도 아니하고 이 곳에서는 떡도 먹지 아니하고 물도 마시지 아니하리니

9 이는 곧 여호와의 말씀이 내게 명령하여 이르시기를 떡도 먹지 말며 물도 마시지 말고 왔던 길로 되돌아가지 말라 하셨음이니이다 하고

10 이에 다른 길로 가고 자기가 벧엘에 오던 길로 되돌아가지도 아니하니라

벧엘의 늙은 선지자

11 벧엘에 한 늙은 선지자가 살더니 그의 아들들이 와서 이 날에 하나님의 사람이 벧엘에서 행한 모든 일을 그에게 말하고 또 그가 왕에게 드린 말씀도 그들이 그들의 아버지에게 말한지라

12 그들의 아버지가 그들에게 이르되 그가 어느 길로 가더냐 하니 그의 아들들이 유다에서부터 온 하나님의 사람의 간 길을 보았음이라

13 그가 그의 아들들에게 이르되 나를 위하여 나귀에 안장을 지우라 그들이 나귀에 안장을 지우니 그가 타고

14 하나님의 사람을 뒤따라가서 상수리나무 아래에 앉은 것을 보고 이르되 그대가 유다에서 온 하나님의 사람이냐 대답하되 그러하다

15 그가 그 사람에게 이르되 나와 함께 집으로 가서 떡을 먹으라

16 대답하되 나는 그대와 함께 돌아가지도 못하겠고 그대와 함께 들어가지도 못하겠으며 내가 이 곳에서 그대와 함께 떡도 먹지 아니하고 물도 마시지 아니하리니

17 이는 여호와의 말씀이 내게 이르시기를 네가 거기서 떡도 먹지 말고 물도 마시지 말며 또 네가 오던 길로 되돌아가지도 말라 하셨음이로다

18 그가 그 사람에게 이르되 나도 그대와 같은 선지자라 천사가 여호와의 말씀으로 내게 이르기를 그를 네 집으로 데리고 돌아가서 그에게 떡을 먹이고 물을 마시게 하라 하였느니라 하니 이는 그 사람을 속임이라

19 이에 그 사람이 그와 함께 돌아가서 그의 집에서 떡을 먹으며 물을 마시니라

20 그들이 상 앞에 앉아 있을 때에 여호와의 말씀이 그 사람을 데려온 선지자에게 임하니

21 그가 유다에서부터 온 하나님의 사람을 향하여 외쳐 이르되 여호와의 말씀에 네가 여호와의 말씀을 어기며 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 내리신 명령을 지키지 아니하고

22 돌아와서 여호와가 너더러 떡도 먹지 말고 물도 마시지 말라 하신 곳에서 떡을 먹고 물을 마셨으니 네 시체가 네 조상들의 묘실에 들어가지 못하리라 하셨느니라 하니라

23 그리고 자기가 데리고 온 선지자가 떡을 먹고 물을 마신 후에 그를 위하여 나귀에 안장을 지우니라

24 이에 그 사람이 가더니 사자가 길에서 그를 만나 물어 죽이매 그의 시체가 길에 버린 바 되니 나귀는 그 곁에 서 있고 사자도 그 시체 곁에 서 있더라

25 지나가는 사람들이 길에 버린 시체와 그 시체 곁에 선 사자를 보고 그 늙은 선지자가 사는 성읍에 가서 말한지라

26 그 사람을 길에서 데리고 돌아간 선지자가 듣고 말하되 이는 여호와의 말씀을 어긴 하나님의 사람이로다 여호와께서 그에게 하신 말씀과 같이 여호와께서 그를 사자에게 넘기시매 사자가 그를 찢어 죽였도다 하고

27 이에 그의 아들들에게 말하여 이르되 나를 위하여 나귀에 안장을 지우라 그들이 안장을 지우매

28 그가 가서 본즉 그의 시체가 길에 버린 바 되었고 나귀와 사자는 그 시체 곁에 서 있는데 사자가 시체를 먹지도 아니하였고 나귀를 찢지도 아니하였더라

29 늙은 선지자가 하나님의 사람의 시체를 들어 나귀에 실어 가지고 돌아와 자기 성읍으로 들어가서 슬피 울며 장사하되

30 곧 그의 시체를 자기의 묘실에 두고 오호라 내 형제여 하며 그를 위하여 슬피우니라

31 그 사람을 장사한 후에 그가 그 아들들에게 말하여 이르되 내가 죽거든 하나님의 사람을 장사한 묘실에 나를 장사하되 내 뼈를 그의 뼈 곁에 두라

32 그가 여호와의 말씀으로 벧엘에 있는 제단을 향하고 또 사마리아 성읍들에 있는 모든 산당을 향하여 외쳐 말한 것이 반드시 이룰 것임이니라

여로보암의 죄

33 여로보암이 이 일 후에도 그의 악한 길에서 떠나 돌이키지 아니하고 다시 일반 백성을 산당의 제사장으로 삼되 누구든지 자원하면 그 사람을 산당의 제사장으로 삼았으므로

34 이 일이 여로보암 집에 죄가 되어 그 집이 땅 위에서 끊어져 멸망하게 되니라

He aquí que un varón de Dios por palabra de Jehová vino de Judá a Bet-el; y estando Jeroboam junto al altar para quemar incienso, 2. aquel clamó contra el altar por palabra de Jehová y dijo: Altar, altar, así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que a la casa de David nacerá un hijo llamado Josías, el cual sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que queman sobre ti incienso, y sobre ti quemarán huesos de hombres. 3. Y aquel mismo día dio una señal, diciendo: Esta es la señal de que Jehová ha hablado: he aquí que el altar se quebrará, y la ceniza que sobre él está se derramará. 4. Cuando el rey Jeroboam oyó la palabra del varón de Dios, que había clamado contra el altar de Bet-el, extendiendo su mano desde el altar, dijo: ¡Prendedle! Mas la mano que había extendido contra él, se le secó, y no la pudo enderezar. 5. Y el altar se rompió, y se derramó la ceniza del altar, conforme a la señal que el varón de Dios había dado por palabra de Jehová. 6. Entonces respondiendo el rey, dijo al varón de Dios: Te pido que ruegues ante la presencia de Jehová tu Dios, y ores por mí, para que mi mano me sea restaurada. Y el varón de Dios oró a Jehová, y la mano del rey se le restauró, y quedó como era antes. 7. Y el rey dijo al varón de Dios: Ven conmigo a casa, y comerás, y yo te daré un presente. 8. Pero el varón de Dios dijo al rey: Aunque me dieras la mitad de tu casa, no iría contigo, ni comería pan ni bebería agua en este lugar. 9. Porque así me está ordenado por palabra de Jehová, diciendo: No comas pan, ni bebas agua, ni regreses por el camino que fueres. 10. Regresó, pues, por otro camino, y no volvió por el camino por donde había venido a Bet-el. 11. Moraba entonces en Bet-el un viejo profeta, al cual vino su hijo y le contó todo lo que el varón de Dios había hecho aquel día en Bet-el; le contaron también a su padre las palabras que había hablado al rey. 12. Y su padre les dijo: ¿Por qué camino se fue? Y sus hijos le mostraron el camino por donde había regresado el varón de Dios que había venido de Judá. 13. Y él dijo a sus hijos: Ensilladme el asno. Y ellos le ensillaron el asno, y él lo montó. 14. Y yendo tras el varón de Dios, le halló sentado debajo de una encina, y le dijo: ¿Eres tú el varón de Dios que vino de Judá? Él dijo: Yo soy. 15. Entonces le dijo: Ven conmigo a casa, y come pan. 16. Mas él respondió: No podré volver contigo, ni iré contigo, ni tampoco comeré pan ni beberé agua contigo en este lugar. 17. Porque por palabra de Dios me ha sido dicho: No comas pan ni bebas agua allí, ni regreses por el camino por donde fueres. 18. Y el otro le dijo, mintiéndole: Yo también soy profeta como tú, y un ángel me ha hablado por palabra de Jehová, diciendo: Tráele contigo a tu casa, para que coma pan y beba agua. 19. Entonces volvió con él, y comió pan en su casa, y bebió agua. 20. Y aconteció que estando ellos en la mesa, vino palabra de Jehová al profeta que le había hecho volver. 21. Y clamó al varón de Dios que había venido de Judá, diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto has sido rebelde al mandato de Jehová, y no guardaste el mandamiento que Jehová tu Dios te había prescrito, 22. sino que volviste, y comiste pan y bebiste agua en el lugar donde Jehová te había dicho que no comieses pan ni bebieses agua, no entrará tu cuerpo en el sepulcro de tus padres. 23. Cuando había comido pan y bebido, el que le había hecho volver le ensilló el asno. 24. Y yéndose, le topó un león en el camino, y le mató; y su cuerpo estaba echado en el camino, y el asno junto a él, y el león también junto al cuerpo. 25. Y he aquí unos que pasaban, y vieron el cuerpo que estaba echado en el camino, y el león que estaba junto al cuerpo; y vinieron y lo dijeron en la ciudad donde el viejo profeta habitaba. 26. Oyéndolo el profeta que le había hecho volver del camino, dijo: El varón de Dios es, que fue rebelde al mandato de Jehová; por tanto, Jehová le ha entregado al león, que le ha quebrantado y matado, conforme a la palabra de Jehová que él le dijo. 27. Y habló a sus hijos, y les dijo: Ensilladme un asno. Y ellos se lo ensillaron. 28. Y él fue, y halló el cuerpo tendido en el camino, y el asno y el león que estaban junto al cuerpo; el león no había comido el cuerpo, ni dañado al asno. 29. Entonces tomó el profeta el cuerpo del varón de Dios, y lo puso sobre el asno y se lo llevó. Y el profeta viejo vino a la ciudad, para endecharle y enterrarle. 30. Y puso el cuerpo en su sepulcro; y le endecharon, diciendo: ¡Ay, hermano mío! 31. Y después que le hubieron enterrado, habló a sus hijos, diciendo: Cuando yo muera, enterradme en el sepulcro en que está sepultado el varón de Dios; poned mis huesos junto a los suyos. 32. Porque sin duda vendrá lo que él dijo a voces por palabra de Jehová contra el altar que está en Bet-el, y contra todas las casas de los lugares altos que están en las ciudades de Samaria. 33. Con todo esto, no se apartó Jeroboam de su mal camino, sino que volvió a hacer sacerdotes de los lugares altos de entre el pueblo, y a quien quería lo consagraba para que fuese de los sacerdotes de los lugares altos. 34. Y esto fue causa de pecado a la casa de Jeroboam, por lo cual fue cortada y raída de sobre la faz de la tierra. 1 #Kings 13 A Man of God Confronts Jeroboam 1. And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings. 2. And the man cried against the altar by the word of the Lord and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’” 3. And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’” 4. And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself. 5. The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6. And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat now the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before. 7. And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” 8. And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place, 9. for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’” 10. So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel. The Prophet’s Disobedience 11. Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. 12. And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. 13. And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. 14. And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.” 15. Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.” 16. And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, 17. for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” 18. And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. 19. So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water. 20. And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back. 21. And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22. but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 23. And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24. And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. 25. And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. 26. And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.” 27. And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it. 28. And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. 29. And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him. 30. And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” 31. And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. 32. For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.” 33. After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. 34. And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.

Un profeta de Judá amonesta a Jeroboam

He aquí que un varón de Dios por palabra de Jehová vino de Judá a Bet-el; y estando Jeroboam junto al altar para quemar incienso,
aquel clamó contra el altar por palabra de Jehová y dijo: Altar, altar, así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que a la casa de David nacerá un hijo llamado Josías, el cual sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que queman sobre ti incienso, y sobre ti quemarán huesos de hombres.
Y aquel mismo día dio una señal, diciendo: Esta es la señal de que Jehová ha hablado: he aquí que el altar se quebrará, y la ceniza que sobre él está se derramará.
Cuando el rey Jeroboam oyó la palabra del varón de Dios, que había clamado contra el altar de Bet-el, extendiendo su mano desde el altar, dijo: ¡Prendedle! Mas la mano que había extendido contra él, se le secó, y no la pudo enderezar.
Y el altar se rompió, y se derramó la ceniza del altar, conforme a la señal que el varón de Dios había dado por palabra de Jehová.
Entonces respondiendo el rey, dijo al varón de Dios: Te pido que ruegues ante la presencia de Jehová tu Dios, y ores por mí, para que mi mano me sea restaurada. Y el varón de Dios oró a Jehová, y la mano del rey se le restauró, y quedó como era antes.
Y el rey dijo al varón de Dios: Ven conmigo a casa, y comerás, y yo te daré un presente.
Pero el varón de Dios dijo al rey: Aunque me dieras la mitad de tu casa, no iría contigo, ni comería pan ni bebería agua en este lugar.
Porque así me está ordenado por palabra de Jehová, diciendo: No comas pan, ni bebas agua, ni regreses por el camino que fueres.
Regresó, pues, por otro camino, y no volvió por el camino por donde había venido a Bet-el.
Moraba entonces en Bet-el un viejo profeta, al cual vino su hijo y le contó todo lo que el varón de Dios había hecho aquel día en Bet-el; le contaron también a su padre las palabras que había hablado al rey.
Y su padre les dijo: ¿Por qué camino se fue? Y sus hijos le mostraron el camino por donde había regresado el varón de Dios que había venido de Judá.
Y él dijo a sus hijos: Ensilladme el asno. Y ellos le ensillaron el asno, y él lo montó.
Y yendo tras el varón de Dios, le halló sentado debajo de una encina, y le dijo: ¿Eres tú el varón de Dios que vino de Judá? Él dijo: Yo soy.
Entonces le dijo: Ven conmigo a casa, y come pan.
Mas él respondió: No podré volver contigo, ni iré contigo, ni tampoco comeré pan ni beberé agua contigo en este lugar.
Porque por palabra de Dios me ha sido dicho: No comas pan ni bebas agua allí, ni regreses por el camino por donde fueres.
Y el otro le dijo, mintiéndole: Yo también soy profeta como tú, y un ángel me ha hablado por palabra de Jehová, diciendo: Tráele contigo a tu casa, para que coma pan y beba agua.
Entonces volvió con él, y comió pan en su casa, y bebió agua.
Y aconteció que estando ellos en la mesa, vino palabra de Jehová al profeta que le había hecho volver.
Y clamó al varón de Dios que había venido de Judá, diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto has sido rebelde al mandato de Jehová, y no guardaste el mandamiento que Jehová tu Dios te había prescrito,
sino que volviste, y comiste pan y bebiste agua en el lugar donde Jehová te había dicho que no comieses pan ni bebieses agua, no entrará tu cuerpo en el sepulcro de tus padres.
Cuando había comido pan y bebido, el que le había hecho volver le ensilló el asno.
Y yéndose, le topó un león en el camino, y le mató; y su cuerpo estaba echado en el camino, y el asno junto a él, y el león también junto al cuerpo.
Y he aquí unos que pasaban, y vieron el cuerpo que estaba echado en el camino, y el león que estaba junto al cuerpo; y vinieron y lo dijeron en la ciudad donde el viejo profeta habitaba.
Oyéndolo el profeta que le había hecho volver del camino, dijo: El varón de Dios es, que fue rebelde al mandato de Jehová; por tanto, Jehová le ha entregado al león, que le ha quebrantado y matado, conforme a la palabra de Jehová que él le dijo.
Y habló a sus hijos, y les dijo: Ensilladme un asno. Y ellos se lo ensillaron.
Y él fue, y halló el cuerpo tendido en el camino, y el asno y el león que estaban junto al cuerpo; el león no había comido el cuerpo, ni dañado al asno.
Entonces tomó el profeta el cuerpo del varón de Dios, y lo puso sobre el asno y se lo llevó. Y el profeta viejo vino a la ciudad, para endecharle y enterrarle.
Y puso el cuerpo en su sepulcro; y le endecharon, diciendo: ¡Ay, hermano mío!
Y después que le hubieron enterrado, habló a sus hijos, diciendo: Cuando yo muera, enterradme en el sepulcro en que está sepultado el varón de Dios; poned mis huesos junto a los suyos.
Porque sin duda vendrá lo que él dijo a voces por palabra de Jehová contra el altar que está en Bet-el, y contra todas las casas de los lugares altos que están en las ciudades de Samaria.
Con todo esto, no se apartó Jeroboam de su mal camino, sino que volvió a hacer sacerdotes de los lugares altos de entre el pueblo, y a quien quería lo consagraba para que fuese de los sacerdotes de los lugares altos.
Y esto fue causa de pecado a la casa de Jeroboam, por lo cual fue cortada y raída de sobre la faz de la tierra.

A Man of God Confronts Jeroboam

And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings.
And the man cried against the altar by the word of the Lord and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’”
And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’”
And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself.
The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.
And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat now the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before.
And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place,
for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’”
So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.

The Prophet’s Disobedience
Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone.
And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it.
And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.”
Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place,
for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’”
And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him.
So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.
And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back.
And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you,
but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”
And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body.
And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived.
And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.”
And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it.
And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey.
And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him.
And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!”
And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.”
After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places.
And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.
