제 26 장
예수를 죽이려고 의논하다(막 14:1-2; 눅 22:1-2; 요 11:45-53)
1 예수께서 이 말씀을 다 마치시고 제자들에게 이르시되
2 너희가 아는 바와 같이 이틀이 지나면 유월절이라 인자가 십자가에 못 박히기 위하여 팔리리라 하시더라
3 그 때에 대제사장들과 백성의 장로들이 가야바라 하는 대제사장의 관정에 모여
4 예수를 흉계로 잡아 죽이려고 의논하되
5 말하기를 민란이 날까 하노니 명절에는 하지 말자 하더라
예수의 머리에 향유를 붓다(막 14:3-9; 요 12:1-8)
6 예수께서 베다니 나병환자 시몬의 집에 계실 때에
7 한 여자가 매우 귀한 향유 한 옥합을 가지고 나아와서 1)식사하시는 예수의 머리에 부으니
8 제자들이 보고 분개하여 이르되 무슨 의도로 이것을 허비하느냐
9 이것을 비싼 값에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하거늘
10 예수께서 아시고 그들에게 이르시되 너희가 어찌하여 이 여자를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라
11 가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있거니와 나는 항상 함께 있지 아니하리라
12 이 여자가 내 몸에 이 향유를 부은 것은 내 장례를 위하여 함이니라
13 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 온 천하에 어디서든지 이 복음이 전파되는 곳에서는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라 하시니라
유다가 배반하다(막 14:10-11; 눅 22:3-6)
14 그 때에 열둘 중의 하나인 가룟유다라 하는 자가 대제사장들에게 가서 말하되
15 내가 예수를 너희에게 넘겨 주리니 얼마나 주려느냐 하니 그들이 은 삼십을 달아 주거늘
16 그가 그 때부터 예수를 넘겨 줄 기회를 찾더라
마지막 만찬(막 14:12-26; 눅 22:7-23; 요 13:21-30; 고전 11:23-25)
17 무교절의 첫날에 제자들이 예수께 나아와서 이르되 유월절 음식 잡수실 것을 우리가 어디서 준비하기를 원하시나이까
18 이르시되 성안 아무에게 가서 이르되 선생님 말씀이 내 때가 가까이 왔으니 내 제자들과 함께 유월절을 네 집에서 지키겠다 하시더라 하라 하시니
19 제자들이 예수께서 시키신 대로 하여 유월절을 준비하였더라
20 저물 때에 예수께서 열두 제자와 함께 1)앉으셨더니
21 그들이 먹을 때에 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중의 한 사람이 나를 팔리라 하시니
22 그들이 몹시 근심하여 각각 여짜오되 주여 나는 아니지요
23 대답하여 이르시되 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 그가 나를 팔리라
24 인자는 자기에 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와 인자를 파는 그 사람에게는 화가 있으리로다 그 사람은 차라리 태어나지 아니하였더라면 제게 좋을 뻔하였느니라
25 예수를 파는 유다가 대답하여 이르되 랍비여 나는 아니지요 대답하시되 네가 말하였도다 하시니라
26 그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받아서 먹으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고
27 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도 하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 다 이것을 마시라
28 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라
29 그러나 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 이제부터 내 아버지의 나라에서 새것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날까지 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라
30 이에 그들이 찬미하고 감람 산으로 나아가니라
베드로가 부인할 것을 예언하시다(막 14:27-31; 눅 22:31-34; 요 13:36-38)
31 그 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 오늘 밤에 너희가 다 나를 2)버리리라 기록된 바 ㄱ)내가 목자를 치리니 양의 떼가 흩어지리라 하였느니라
32 그러나 내가 살아난 후에 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라
33 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 모두 주를 3)버릴지라도 나는 결코 4)버리지 않겠나이다
34 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라
35 베드로가 이르되 내가 주와 함께 죽을지언정 주를 부인하지 않겠나이다 하고 모든 제자도 그와 같이 말하니라
겟세마네에서 기도하시다(막 14:32-42; 눅 22:39-46)
36 이에 예수께서 제자들과 함께 겟세마네라 하는 곳에 이르러 제자들에게 이르시되 내가 저기 가서 기도할 동안에 너희는 여기 앉아 있으라 하시고
37 베드로와 세베대의 두 아들을 데리고 가실새 고민하고 슬퍼하사
38 이에 말씀하시되 내 마음이 매우 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 나와 함께 깨어 있으라 하시고
39 조금 나아가사 얼굴을 땅에 대시고 엎드려 기도하여 이르시되 내 아버지여 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서 하시고
40 제자들에게 오사 그 자는 것을 보시고 베드로에게 말씀하시되 너희가 나와 함께 한 시간도 이렇게 깨어 있을 수 없더냐
41 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 기도하라 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다 하시고
42 다시 두 번째 나아가 기도하여 이르시되 내 아버지여 만일 내가 마시지 않고는 이 잔이 내게서 지나갈 수 없거든 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다 하시고
43 다시 오사 보신즉 그들이 자니 이는 그들의 눈이 피곤함일러라
44 또 그들을 두시고 나아가 세 번째 같은 말씀으로 기도하신 후
45 이에 제자들에게 오사 이르시되 이제는 자고 쉬라 보라 때가 가까이 왔으니 인자가 죄인의 손에 팔리느니라
46 일어나라 함께 가자 보라 나를 파는 자가 가까이 왔느니라
잡히시다(막 14:43-50; 눅 22:47-53; 요 18:3-12)
47 말씀하실 때에 열둘 중의 하나인 유다가 왔는데 대제사장들과 백성의 장로들에게서 파송된 큰 무리가 칼과 몽치를 가지고 그와 함께 하였더라
48 예수를 파는 자가 그들에게 군호를 짜 이르되 내가 입맞추는 자가 그이니 그를 잡으라 한지라
49 곧 예수께 나아와 랍비여 안녕하시옵니까 하고 입을 맞추니
50 예수께서 이르시되 친구여 네가 무엇을 하려고 왔는지 행하라 하신대 이에 그들이 나아와 예수께 손을 대어 잡는지라
51 예수와 함께 있던 자 중의 하나가 손을 펴 칼을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐 그 귀를 떨어뜨리니
52 이에 예수께서 이르시되 네 칼을 도로 칼집에 꽂으라 칼을 가지는 자는 다 칼로 망하느니라
53 너는 내가 내 아버지께 구하여 지금 열두 군단 더 되는 천사를 보내시게 할 수 없는 줄로 아느냐
54 내가 만일 그렇게 하면 이런 일이 있으리라 한 성경이 어떻게 이루어지겠느냐 하시더라
55 그 때에 예수께서 무리에게 말씀하시되 너희가 강도를 잡는 것 같이 칼과 몽치를 가지고 나를 잡으러 나왔느냐 내가 날마다 성전에 앉아 가르쳤으되 너희가 나를 잡지 아니하였도다
56 그러나 이렇게 된 것은 다 선지자들의 글을 이루려 함이니라 하시더라 이에 제자들이 다 예수를 버리고 도망하니라
공회 앞에 서시다(막 14:53-65; 눅 22:54-55, 63-71; 요 18:13-14, 19-24)
57 예수를 잡은 자들이 그를 끌고 대제사장 가야바에게로 가니 거기 서기관과 장로들이 모여 있더라
58 베드로가 멀찍이 예수를 따라 대제사장의 집 뜰에까지 가서 그 결말을 보려고 안에 들어가 하인들과 함께 앉아 있더라
59 대제사장들과 온 공회가 예수를 죽이려고 그를 칠 거짓 증거를 찾으매
60 거짓 증인이 많이 왔으나 얻지 못하더니 후에 두 사람이 와서
61 이르되 이 사람의 말이 내가 하나님의 성전을 헐고 사흘 동안에 지을 수 있다 하더라 하니
62 대제사장이 일어서서 예수께 묻되 아무 대답도 없느냐 이 사람들이 너를 치는 증거가 어떠하냐 하되
63 예수께서 침묵하시거늘 대제사장이 이르되 내가 너로 살아 계신 하나님께 맹세하게 하노니 네가 하나님의 아들 그리스도인지 우리에게 말하라
64 예수께서 이르시되 네가 말하였느니라 그러나 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이 후에 인자가 권능의 우편에 앉아 있는 것과 하늘 구름을 타고 오는 것을 너희가 보리라 하시니
65 이에 대제사장이 자기 옷을 찢으며 이르되 그가 신성모독 하는 말을 하였으니 어찌 더 증인을 요구하리요 보라 너희가 지금 이 신성모독 하는 말을 들었도다
66 너희 생각은 어떠하냐 대답하여 이르되 그는 사형에 해당하니라 하고
67 이에 예수의 얼굴에 침 뱉으며 주먹으로 치고 어떤 사람은 손바닥으로 때리며
68 이르되 그리스도야 우리에게 선지자 노릇을 하라 너를 친 자가 누구냐 하더라
베드로가 예수를 알지 못한다고 하다(막 14:66-72; 눅 22:56-62; 요 18:15-18, 25-27)
69 베드로가 바깥 뜰에 앉았더니 한 여종이 나아와 이르되 너도 갈릴리 사람 예수와 함께 있었도다 하거늘
70 베드로가 모든 사람 앞에서 부인하여 이르되 나는 네가 무슨 말을 하는지 알지 못하겠노라 하며
71 앞문까지 나아가니 다른 여종이 그를 보고 거기 있는 사람들에게 말하되 이 사람은 나사렛 예수와 함께 있었도다 하매
72 베드로가 맹세하고 또 부인하여 이르되 나는 그 사람을 알지 못하노라 하더라
73 조금 후에 곁에 섰던 사람들이 나아와 베드로에게 이르되 너도 진실로 그 도당이라 네 말소리가 너를 표명한다 하거늘
74 그가 저주하며 맹세하여 이르되 나는 그 사람을 알지 못하노라 하니 곧 닭이 울더라
75 이에 베드로가 예수의 말씀에 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라 하심이 생각나서 밖에 나가서 심히 통곡하니라
CAPÍTULO 26
Jesús es ungido — Jesús celebra la Pascua e instituye la Santa Cena — Padece en Getsemaní; es entregado por Judas y llevado ante Caifás — Pedro niega conocer a Jesús.
1 Y aconteció que, cuando Jesús hubo acabado todas estas palabras, dijo a sus discípulos:
2 Sabéis que dentro de dos días se celebra la aPascua, y el Hijo del Hombre será bentregado para ser ccrucificado.
3 Entonces los principales sacerdotes, y los escribas y los ancianos del pueblo se reunieron en el patio del sumo sacerdote, que se llamaba aCaifás;
4 y se confabularon para prender con aengaño a Jesús, y bmatarle.
5 Pero decían: No durante la fiesta, para que no se haga alboroto en el pueblo.
6 Y estando Jesús en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso,
7 vino a él una mujer con un vaso de alabastro de aperfume de gran precio, y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de él, estando sentado a la mesa.
8 Al ver esto, sus discípulos se enojaron y dijeron: ¿Para qué este desperdicio?
9 Porque este perfume hubiera podido venderse por gran precio y haberse dado a los pobres.
10 Y entendiéndolo Jesús, les dijo: ¿Por qué molestáis a esta mujer? Pues ha hecho conmigo una buena obra.
11 Porque siempre tendréis pobres con vosotros, pero a mí no siempre me tendréis.
12 Porque al derramar este perfume sobre mi cuerpo, lo ha hecho a fin de prepararme para la sepultura.
13 De cierto os digo que dondequiera que se predique este evangelio, en todo el mundo, también se contará lo que esta ha hecho, para memoria de ella.
14 Entonces uno de los doce, que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fue a los principales sacerdotes
15 y les dijo: ¿Qué me queréis dar, y yo os lo entregaré? Y ellos le pesaron atreinta piezas de plata.
16 Y desde entonces buscaba oportunidad para entregarle.
17 Y el primer día de la fiesta de los apanes sin levadura, vinieron los discípulos a Jesús, diciéndole: ¿Dónde quieres que te hagamos los preparativos para comer la Pascua?
18 Y él dijo: Id a la ciudad, a cierto hombre, y decidle: El Maestro dice: Mi tiempo está cerca; en tu casa celebraré la Pascua con mis discípulos.
19 Y los discípulos hicieron como Jesús les mandó y prepararon la Pascua.
20 Y al anochecer, se sentó a la mesa con los doce.
21 Y mientras comían, dijo: De cierto os digo que auno de vosotros me va a entregar.
22 Y entristecidos en gran manera, comenzó cada uno de ellos a decirle: ¿Soy yo, Señor?
23 Entonces él, respondiendo, dijo: El que mete la mano conmigo en el plato, ese me va a entregar.
24 A la verdad el Hijo del Hombre va, como está aescrito de él, mas, ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien el Hijo del Hombre es entregado! Bueno le fuera a ese hombre no haber nacido.
25 Entonces, respondiendo Judas, el que le iba a entregar, dijo: ¿Soy yo, Maestro? Y él le dijo: Tú lo has dicho.
26 aY mientras comían, tomó Jesús el bpan, cy lo bendijo, y lo partió y dio a sus discípulos, y dijo: Tomad, comed; esto es mi cuerpo.
27 Y tomando la acopa, y habiendo dado gracias, les dio, diciendo: Bebed de ella todos;
28 porque esto es mi asangre del nuevo bconvenio, que por muchos es derramada para cremisión de los pecados.
29 Y os digo que desde ahora no beberé más de este fruto de la vid, hasta aquel día cuando lo abeba nuevo con vosotros en el reino de mi Padre.
30 Y cuando hubieron cantado el ahimno, salieron al bmonte de los Olivos.
31 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Todos vosotros os aescandalizaréis de mí esta noche; porque escrito está: bHeriré al Pastor, y las ovejas del rebaño serán dispersadas.
32 Pero después que haya aresucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea.
33 Y respondiendo Pedro, le dijo: Aunque todos se escandalicen de ti, yo nunca me aescandalizaré.
34 Jesús le dijo: De cierto te digo que esta noche, antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces.
35 Le dijo Pedro: Aunque me sea menester morir contigo, no te negaré. Y todos los discípulos dijeron lo mismo.
36 Entonces llegó Jesús con ellos a un lugar que se llama aGetsemaní, y dijo a sus discípulos: Sentaos aquí, mientras voy allí y oro.
37 Y tomando consigo a Pedro y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo, comenzó a entristecerse y a angustiarse en gran manera.
38 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Mi alma está amuy triste, hasta la muerte; quedaos aquí y velad conmigo.
39 Y yéndose un poco más adelante, se postró sobre su rostro, orando y diciendo: Padre mío, si es posible, pase de mí esta acopa; pero no sea como yo quiero, sino bcomo tú.
40 Y vino a sus discípulos y los halló durmiendo, y dijo a Pedro: ¿Así que ano habéis podido velar conmigo una hora?
41 aVelad y orad, para que no entréis en btentación; el espíritu a la verdad está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil.
42 Otra vez fue y oró por segunda vez, diciendo: Padre mío, si no puede pasar de mí esta copa sin que yo la beba, hágase tu voluntad.
43 Y vino otra vez y los halló durmiendo, porque los ojos de ellos estaban cargados de sueño.
44 Y dejándolos, se fue de nuevo y oró por tercera vez, diciendo las mismas palabras.
45 Entonces vino a sus discípulos y les dijo: Dormid ya, y descansad. He aquí ha llegado la hora, y el Hijo del Hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores.
46 ¡Levantaos, vamos! He aquí ha llegado el que me entrega.
47 Mientras todavía hablaba, he aquí llegó aJudas, uno de los doce, y con él mucha gente con espadas y con palos, de parte de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos del pueblo.
48 Y el que le entregaba les había dado señal, diciendo: Al que yo bese, ese es; prendedle.
49 Y enseguida se acercó a Jesús y dijo: Salve, Maestro. Y le besó.
50 Y Jesús le dijo: Amigo, ¿a qué vienes? Entonces se acercaron, y echaron mano a Jesús y le prendieron.
51 Y he aquí, uno de los que estaban con Jesús, extendiendo la mano, sacó su espada, e hirió a un asiervo del sumo sacerdote y le cortó la oreja.
52 Entonces Jesús le dijo: Vuelve tu espada a su lugar, porque todos los que tomen espada, a espada perecerán.
53 ¿Acaso piensas que no puedo orar a mi Padre ahora, y que él no me daría más de doce legiones de ángeles?
54 ¿Cómo, pues, se cumplirían las aEscrituras de que así debe suceder?
55 En aquella hora dijo Jesús a la gente: ¿Así como contra un ladrón habéis salido con espadas y con palos para prenderme? Cada día me sentaba con vosotros aenseñando en el templo, y no me prendisteis.
56 Mas todo esto ha sucedido para que se cumplan las Escrituras de los profetas. Entonces todos los discípulos, dejándole, huyeron.
57 Y los que prendieron a Jesús le llevaron a aCaifás, el sumo sacerdote, donde los escribas y los ancianos estaban reunidos.
58 Mas Pedro le seguía de lejos hasta el patio del sumo sacerdote; y entrando, se sentó con los guardias, para ver el fin.
59 Y los principales sacerdotes, y los ancianos y todo el consejo buscaban falso testimonio contra Jesús, apara entregarlo a la muerte;
60 pero no lo hallaron, aunque muchos atestigos falsos se presentaban; mas al fin vinieron dos testigos falsos,
61 que dijeron: Este dijo: Puedo derribar el atemplo de Dios y en tres días reedificarlo.
62 Y levantándose el sumo sacerdote, le dijo: ¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué testifican estos contra ti?
63 Mas Jesús acallaba. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le dijo: Te bconjuro por el Dios viviente, que nos digas si eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios.
64 Jesús le dijo: Tú lo has dicho; y además os digo que desde ahora veréis al aHijo del Hombre sentado a la diestra del poder de Dios, y bviniendo en las nubes del cielo.
65 Entonces el sumo sacerdote rasgó sus vestiduras, diciendo: ¡Ha ablasfemado! ¿Qué más necesidad tenemos de testigos? He aquí, ahora mismo habéis oído su blasfemia.
66 ¿Qué os parece? Y respondiendo ellos, dijeron: ¡Es culpable ade muerte!
67 Entonces le aescupieron en el rostro y le dieron de puñetazos; y otros le babofeteaban,
68 diciendo: Profetízanos tú, Cristo, quién es el que te ha golpeado.
69 Y Pedro estaba sentado fuera en el patio; y se acercó a él una criada, diciendo: Tú también estabas con Jesús, el galileo.
70 Pero él negó delante de todos, diciendo: No sé lo que dices.
71 Y saliendo él a la puerta, le vio otra y dijo a los que estaban allí: También este estaba con Jesús de Nazaret.
72 Y negó otra vez con juramento: No conozco al hombre.
73 Y un poco después se acercaron los que estaban por allí y dijeron a Pedro: Verdaderamente también tú eres de ellos, porque aun tu manera de hablar te descubre.
74 Entonces él comenzó a maldecir y a jurar, diciendo: ¡No conozco al hombre! Y enseguida cantó el gallo.
75 Entonces se acordó Pedro de las palabras que Jesús le había dicho: aAntes que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces. Y saliendo fuera, lloró amargamente.
CHAPTER 26
Jesus is anointed—He keeps the Passover and institutes the sacrament—He suffers in Gethsemane, is betrayed by Judas, and is taken before Caiaphas—Peter denies that he knows Jesus.
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,
2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the apassover, and the Son of man is bbetrayed to be ccrucified.
3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called aCaiaphas,
4 And aconsulted that they might take Jesus by bsubtilty, and ckill him.
5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an auproar among the people.
6 ¶ Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious aointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this awaste?
9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath awrought a good work upon me.
11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it afor my burial.
13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
14 ¶ Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for athirty pieces of silver.
16 And from that time he sought opportunity to abetray him.
17 ¶ Now the first day of the feast of aunleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the bpassover?
18 And he said, Go into the city ato such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My btime is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the apassover.
20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
24 The Son of man goeth as it is awritten of him: but woe unto that man by whom the bSon of man is betrayed! cit had been good for that man if he had not been dborn.
25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
26 ¶ aAnd as they were eating, Jesus took bbread, cand blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my dbody.
27 And he took the acup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, bDrink ye all of it;
28 For this is my ablood of the new btestament, which is shed for many for the cremission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not adrink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I bdrink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
30 And when they had sung an ahymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be aoffended because of me this night: for it is written, I will bsmite the cshepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
32 But after I am arisen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be aoffended.
34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
36 ¶ Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called aGethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and bpray yonder.
37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and abegan to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is aexceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and bwatch with me.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and aprayed, saying, O my bFather, if it be possible, let this ccup pass from me: nevertheless not as I dwill, but as ethou fwilt.
40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them aasleep, and saith unto Peter, What, bcould ye not watch with me one hour?
41 aWatch and bpray, that ye enter not into ctemptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy awill be done.
43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is abetrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47 ¶ And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49 And aforthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a aservant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall aperish with the sword.
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then shall the ascriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you ateaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
57 ¶ And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to aCaiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false awitness against Jesus, bto put him to death;
60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false awitnesses,
61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the atemple of God, and to build it in three days.
62 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
63 But Jesus aheld his bpeace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I cadjure thee by the dliving God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the aSon of man sitting on the right hand of bpower, and ccoming in the clouds of heaven.
65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken ablasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is aguilty bof cdeath.
67 Then did they aspit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that asmote thee?
69 ¶ Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a adamsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.
70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech abewrayeth thee.
74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the acock crew.
75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt adeny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
