제 14 장

예수를 죽일 방도를 찾다(마 26:1-5; 눅 22:1-2; 요 11:45-53)

1 이틀이 지나면 유월절과 무교절이라 대제사장들과 서기관들이 예수를 흉계로 잡아 죽일 방도를 구하며

2 이르되 민란이 날까 하노니 명절에는 하지 말자 하더라

예수의 머리에 향유를 붓다(마 26:6-13; 요 12:1-8)

3 예수께서 베다니 나병환자 시몬의 집에서 1)식사하실 때에 한 여자가 매우 값진 향유 곧 순전한 나드 한 옥합을 가지고 와서 그 옥합을 깨뜨려 예수의 머리에 부으니

4 어떤 사람들이 화를 내어 서로 말하되 어찌하여 이 향유를 허비하는가

5 이 향유를 삼백 2)데나리온 이상에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하며 그 여자를 책망하는지라

6 예수께서 이르시되 가만 두라 너희가 어찌하여 그를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라

7 가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있으니 아무 때라도 원하는 대로 도울 수 있거니와 나는 너희와 항상 함께 있지 아니하리라

8 그는 힘을 다하여 내 몸에 향유를 부어 내 장례를 미리 준비하였느니라

9 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 온 천하에 어디서든지 복음이 전파되는 곳에는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라 하시니라

유다가 배반하다(마 26:14-16; 눅 22:3-6)

10 열둘 중의 하나인 가룟유다가 예수를 넘겨 주려고 대제사장들에게 가매

11 그들이 듣고 기뻐하여 돈을 주기로 약속하니 유다가 예수를 어떻게 넘겨 줄까 하고 그 기회를 찾더라

제자들과 함께 유월절을 지키시다(마 26:17-25; 눅 22:7-14, 21-23; 요 13:21-30)

12 무교절의 첫날 곧 유월절 양 잡는 날에 제자들이 예수께 여짜오되 우리가 어디로 가서 선생님께서 유월절 음식을 잡수시게 준비하기를 원하시나이까 하매

13 예수께서 제자 중의 둘을 보내시며 이르시되 성내로 들어가라 그리하면 물 한 동이를 가지고 가는 사람을 만나리니 그를 따라가서

14 어디든지 그가 들어가는 그 집 주인에게 이르되 선생님의 말씀이 내가 내 제자들과 함께 유월절 음식을 먹을 나의 객실이 어디 있느냐 하시더라 하라

15 그리하면 자리를 펴고 준비한 큰 다락방을 보이리니 거기서 우리를 위하여 준비하라 하시니

16 제자들이 나가 성내로 들어가서 예수께서 하시던 말씀대로 만나 유월절 음식을 준비하니라

17 저물매 그 열둘을 데리시고 가서

18 다 앉아 먹을 때에 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중의 한 사람 곧 나와 함께 먹는 자가 나를 팔리라 하신대

19 그들이 근심하며 하나씩 하나씩 나는 아니지요 하고 말하기 시작하니

20 그들에게 이르시되 열둘 중의 하나 곧 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 자니라

21 인자는 자기에 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와 인자를 파는 그 사람에게는 화가 있으리로다 그 사람은 차라리 나지 아니하였더라면 자기에게 좋을 뻔하였느니라 하시니라

마지막 만찬(마 26:26-30; 눅 22:15-20; 고전 11:23-25)

22 그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고

23 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도 하시고 그들에게 주시니 다 이를 마시매

24 이르시되 이것은 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라

25 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 하나님 나라에서 새 것으로 마시는 날까지 다시 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라

26 이에 그들이 찬미하고 감람 산으로 가니라

베드로가 부인할 것을 예언하시다(마 26:31-35; 눅 22:31-34; 요 13:36-38)

27 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 너희가 다 3)나를 버리리라 이는 기록된 바 내가 목자를 치리니 양들이 흩어지리라 하였음이니라

28 그러나 내가 살아난 후에 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라

29 베드로가 여짜오되 다 4)버릴지라도 나는 그리하지 않겠나이다

30 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 이 밤 닭이 두 번 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라

31 베드로가 힘있게 말하되 내가 주와 함께 죽을지언정 주를 부인하지 않겠나이다 하고 모든 제자도 이와 같이 말하니라

겟세마네에서 기도하시다(마 26:36-46; 눅 22:39-46)

32 그들이 겟세마네라 하는 곳에 이르매 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 내가 기도할 동안에 너희는 여기 앉아 있으라 하시고

33 베드로와 야고보와 요한을 데리고 가실새 심히 놀라시며 슬퍼하사

34 말씀하시되 내 마음이 심히 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 깨어 있으라 하시고

35 조금 나아가사 땅에 엎드리어 될 수 있는 대로 이 때가 자기에게서 지나가기를 구하여

36 이르시되 아빠 아버지여 아버지께는 모든 것이 가능하오니 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서 하시고

37 돌아오사 제자들이 자는 것을 보시고 베드로에게 말씀하시되 시몬아 자느냐 네가 한 시간도 깨어 있을 수 없더냐

38 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 있어 기도하라 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다 하시고

39 다시 나아가 동일한 말씀으로 기도하시고

40 다시 오사 보신즉 그들이 자니 이는 그들의 눈이 심히 피곤함이라 그들이 예수께 무엇으로 대답할 줄을 알지 못하더라

41 세 번째 오사 그들에게 이르시되 이제는 자고 쉬라 그만 되었다 때가 왔도다 보라 인자가 죄인의 손에 팔리느니라

42 일어나라 함께 가자 보라 나를 파는 자가 가까이 왔느니라

잡히시다(마 26:47-56; 눅 22:47-53; 요 18:2-12)

43 예수께서 말씀하실 때에 곧 열둘 중의 하나인 유다가 왔는데 대제사장들과 서기관들과 장로들에게서 파송된 무리가 검과 몽치를 가지고 그와 함께 하였더라

44 예수를 파는 자가 이미 그들과 군호를 짜 이르되 내가 입맞추는 자가 그이니 그를 잡아 단단히 끌어 가라 하였는지라

45 이에 와서 곧 예수께 나아와 랍비여 하고 입을 맞추니

46 그들이 예수께 손을 대어 잡거늘

47 곁에 서 있는 자 중의 한 사람이 칼을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐 그 귀를 떨어뜨리니라

48 예수께서 무리에게 말씀하여 이르시되 너희가 강도를 잡는 것 같이 검과 몽치를 가지고 나를 잡으러 나왔느냐

49 내가 날마다 너희와 함께 성전에 있으면서 가르쳤으되 너희가 나를 잡지 아니하였도다 그러나 이는 성경을 이루려 함이니라 하시더라

50 제자들이 다 예수를 버리고 도망하니라

한 청년이 벗은 몸으로 도망하다

51 한 청년이 벗은 몸에 베 홑이불을 두르고 예수를 따라가다가 무리에게 잡히매

52 베 홑이불을 버리고 벗은 몸으로 도망하니라

공회 앞에 서시다(마 26:57-68; 눅 22:54-55, 63-71; 요 18:13-14, 19-24)

53 그들이 예수를 끌고 대제사장에게로 가니 대제사장들과 장로들과 서기관들이 다 모이더라

54 베드로가 예수를 멀찍이 따라 대제사장의 집 뜰 안까지 들어가서 아랫사람들과 함께 앉아 불을 쬐더라

55 대제사장들과 온 공회가 예수를 죽이려고 그를 칠 증거를 찾되 얻지 못하니

56 이는 예수를 쳐서 거짓 증언 하는 자가 많으나 그 증언이 서로 일치하지 못함이라

57 어떤 사람들이 일어나 예수를 쳐서 거짓 증언 하여 이르되

58 우리가 그의 말을 들으니 손으로 지은 이 성전을 내가 헐고 손으로 짓지 아니한 다른 성전을 사흘 동안에 지으리라 하더라 하되

59 그 증언도 서로 일치하지 않더라

60 대제사장이 가운데 일어서서 예수에게 물어 이르되 너는 아무 대답도 없느냐 이 사람들이 너를 치는 증거가 어떠하냐 하되

61 침묵하고 아무 대답도 아니하시거늘 대제사장이 다시 물어 이르되 네가 찬송 받을 이의 아들 그리스도냐

62 예수께서 이르시되 내가 그니라 인자가 권능자의 우편에 앉은 것과 하늘 구름을 타고 오는 것을 너희가 보리라 하시니

63 대제사장이 자기 옷을 찢으며 이르되 우리가 어찌 더 증인을 요구하리요

64 그 신성모독 하는 말을 너희가 들었도다 너희는 어떻게 생각하느냐 하니 그들이 다 예수를 사형에 해당한 자로 정죄하고

65 어떤 사람은 그에게 침을 뱉으며 그의 얼굴을 가리고 주먹으로 치며 이르되 선지자 노릇을 하라 하고 하인들은 손바닥으로 치더라

베드로가 예수를 알지 못한다고 하다(마 26:69-75; 눅 22:56-62; 요 18:15-18, 25-27)

66 베드로는 아랫뜰에 있더니 대제사장의 여종 하나가 와서

67 베드로가 불 쬐고 있는 것을 보고 주목하여 이르되 너도 나사렛 예수와 함께 있었도다 하거늘

68 베드로가 부인하여 이르되 나는 네가 말하는 것이 무엇인지 알지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못하겠노라 하며 앞뜰로 나갈새

69 여종이 그를 보고 곁에 서 있는 자들에게 다시 이르되 이 사람은 그 도당이라 하되

70 또 부인하더라 조금 후에 곁에 서 있는 사람들이 다시 베드로에게 말하되 너도 갈릴리 사람이니 참으로 그 도당이니라

71 그러나 베드로가 저주하며 맹세하되 나는 너희가 말하는 이 사람을 알지 못하노라 하니

72 닭이 곧 두 번째 울더라 이에 베드로가 예수께서 자기에게 하신 말씀 곧 닭이 두 번 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라 하심이 기억되어 그 일을 생각하고 울었더라

MARCOS 14

1Faltaban dos días para la Pascua y para la Fiesta de los panes sin levadura. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los líderes religiosos estaban tratando de encontrar alguna manera oculta de arrestar a Jesús y mandarlo a matar. 2“Pero no será durante la Pascua”, pensaban ellos, “de lo contrario el pueblo podría amotinarse”.

3Mientras tanto, Jesús estaba en Betania, cenando en la casa de Simón, el leproso. Una mujer entró con un frasco de alabastro que contenía un costoso perfume de nardo puro. Ella quebró el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.

4Y algunos de los que estaban allí se molestaron y dijeron: “¿Por qué desperdiciar este perfume? 5Podría haberse vendido por el salario de un año y luego se habría dado ese dinero a los pobres” Y estaban muy molestos con ella.

6Pero Jesús respondió: “¡Déjenla en paz! ¿Por qué la critican por hacer algo hermoso por mí? 7Ustedes siempre tendrán a los pobres entre ustedes y podrán ayudarlos cuando quieran. Pero no siempre me tendrán a mí aquí con ustedes. 8Ella hizo lo que pudo: ungió mi cuerpo en anticipación para mi sepultura. 9Les digo la verdad: dondequiera que se predique la Buena Noticia, la gente recordará lo que ella hizo”.

10Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce discípulos, fue donde los jefes de los sacerdotes y llegó con ellos a un acuerdo para entregarles a Jesús. 11Cuando ellos oyeron esto, se alegraron, y prometieron pagarle. Así que Judas comenzó a buscar una oportunidad para entregar a Jesús.

12El primer día de la Fiesta de los panes sin levadura, el tiempo cuando se sacrifica el cordero de la Pascua, los discípulos de Jesús le preguntaron: “¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a preparar la cena de la Pascua para ti?”

13Entonces él envió a dos de sus discípulos, diciéndoles: “Entren a la ciudad y allí conocerán a un hombre que llevará una olla de agua. Síganlo 14y cuando él entre a una casa, pregúntenle al dueño dónde puedo yo celebrar con mis discípulos la Pascua. 15Él los llevará a un salón en el piso de arriba, que ya está arreglado y listo. Allí pueden hacer los preparativos para nosotros”.

16Entonces los discípulos fueron a la ciudad, y encontraron las cosas tal como él las había descrito. Prepararon la cena de la Pascua, 17y en la noche Jesús fue allí con los doce discípulos.

18Mientras estaban sentados y comiendo, Jesús dijo: “Les digo la verdad: uno de ustedes va a entregarme, uno que está comiendo ahora conmigo”.

19Ellos estaban sorprendidos, y cada uno preguntaba: “No soy yo, ¿cierto?”

20“Es uno de los doce, uno de ustedes y que está compartiendo esta comida conmigo. 21El Hijo del hombre morirá, tal como lo dijeron las Escrituras. ¡Pero cuán terrible será para quien entregue al Hijo del hombre! Mejor sería que ese hombre no hubiera nacido”. 22Mientras comían, Jesús tomó el pan con sus manos. Luego lo bendijo y lo dio a los discípulos. “Tomen. Este es mi cuerpo”, les dijo.

23Entonces tomó la copa en sus manos. La bendijo y la dio a los discípulos. Y todos bebieron de ella. 24“Esta es mi sangre”, les dijo, “el pacto que es vertido por muchos. 25Les digo la verdad: no beberé más del fruto de la vid hasta el día en que lo beba nuevamente en el reino de Dios”.

26Después de haber cantado un salmo, se fueron hacia el Monte de los Olivos.

27“Todos ustedes me abandonarán”, les dijo Jesús. “Porque como dicen las Escrituras, ‘Yo atacaré al pastor, y las ovejas estarán totalmente dispersas’. 28Pero después que yo me haya levantado de entre los muertos, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea”.

29“Yo no te abandonaré aunque todos los demás lo hagan”, respondió Pedro.

30Jesús le respondió: “Te digo la verdad hoy: esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, tres veces negarás que me conoces”.

31Pero Pedro, insistentemente dijo: “Aun si me toca morir contigo, nunca te negaré”. Y todos ellos dijeron lo mismo.

32Llegaron entonces a un lugar llamado Getsemaní, donde Jesús le dijo a sus discípulos: “Siéntense aquí mientras yo voy a orar”. 33Y llevó consigo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Entonces su espíritu se turbó y estaba muy afligido.

34Jesús les dijo: “Mi agonía es tan dolorosa que siento que muero. Por favor, quédense aquí y estén despiertos”. 35Se fue un poco más lejos y se postró en el suelo. Oraba, pidiendo que el momento que estaba por llegar pudiera evitarse, si fuera posible.

36“¡Abba, Padre! Tú puedes hacerlo todo”, decía. “Por favor, quítame esta copa de sufrimiento. Pero que no sea como yo quiero, sino como tú quieres”.

37Entonces Jesús regresó y encontró a los discípulos dormidos. “Simón, ¿estás durmiendo?” le preguntó a Pedro. “¿No pudieron estar despiertos conmigo tan solo una hora? 38Quédense despiertos, y oren para que no caigan en tentación. El espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil”.

39Una vez más los dejó allí, y oraba, pidiendo lo mismo otra vez. 40Entonces regresó y una vez más los encontró durmiendo porque no podía mantener sus ojos abiertos. Ellos no sabían qué responder. 41Entonces Jesús regresó por tercera vez, y les preguntó, “¿aún están dormidos? ¿Aún están descansando? ¡Pues ya es suficiente, porque ha llegado el momento! Miren, el Hijo del hombre está a punto de ser entregado en manos de pecadores. 42¡Levántense! ¡Vamos! Miren, aquí viene el que me entrega”.

43Justo cuando decía esto, Judas—uno de los doce discípulos—llegó con una turba que traía espadas y palos, enviados por los jefes de los sacerdotes, líderes religiosos y ancianos. 44Aconteció que el que entregaba a Jesús se había puesto de acuerdo con ellos en una señal: “El que yo bese, ese es. Arréstenlo, y llévenselo bajo custodia”.

45Judas llegó directamente donde estaba Jesús. “Maestro”, le dijo, y lo besó. 46Entonces ellos lo agarraron y lo arrestaron. 47Pero uno de los que estaba allí sacó su espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole la oreja.

48“¿Acaso soy alguna clase de rebelde, que han venido a arrestarme con espadas y palos?” les preguntó Jesús. 49“Estuve allí en el Templo, enseñándoles cada día. ¿Por qué no me arrestaron en ese momento? Pero esto ha ocurrido para cumplir las Escrituras”.

50Entonces todos los discípulos de Jesús lo abandonaron y huyeron. 51(Uno de sus seguidores era un joven que usaba solamente un vestido de lino. 52Ellos lo sujetaron por la fuerza, pero él salió corriendo desnudo, dejando allí tirado su vestido).

53Entonces llevaron a Jesús a la casa del sumo sacerdote, donde se habían reunido todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, ancianos y líderes religiosos. 54Pedro lo seguía a la distancia, y entró al patio de la casa del sumo sacerdote. Se sentó allí con los guardias y se calentaba cerca de la fogata.

55Dento de la casa, los jefes de los sacerdotes y todo el concilio de gobierno trataba de encontrar alguna evidencia para mandar a matar a Jesús, pero no podían encontrar nada. 56Había muchos dando falso testimonio contra él, pero sus afirmaciones no concordaban.

57Algunos de ellos se levantaron a decir cosas falsas sobre Jesús. 58“Lo oímos decir: ‘Destruiré este Templo que han construido manos humanas, y en tres días lo volveré a construir sin usar las manos’”. 59Pero aun así sus testimonios no concordaban.

60Entonces el sumo sacerdote se puso en pie frente al concilio, y le preguntó a Jesús: “¿No tienes nada que decir en respuesta a las acusaciones que se han hecho en tu contra?” 61Pero Jesús permanecía en silencio y no respondía. Así que el sumo sacerdote le preguntó de nuevo: “¿eres el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios bendito?”

62“Lo soy”, respondió Jesús, “y ustedes verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la diestra del Todopoderoso, y viniendo en las nubes del cielo”.

63Entonces el sumo sacerdote rasgó sus vestidos y preguntó: “¿Por qué necesitamos más testigos? 64¡Ustedes mismos han escuchado la blasfemia! ¿Qué tienen para decir?”

Y todos lo hallaron culpable y lo condenaron a muerte. 65Entonces algunos de ellos comenzaron a escupirlo. Le vendaron los ojos, lo golpeaban en la cabeza y le decían: “¡¿Por qué no profetizas ‘profeta’?!” Y los guardias se lo llevaron y lo golpearon.

66Mientras tanto Pedro estaba abajo en el patio. Y una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote pasaba por allí, 67y al ver a Pedro que se calentaba junto a la fogata, lo miró fijamente y dijo: “¡Tú también estabas con Jesús de Nazaret!”

68Pero él lo negó. “No sé de qué hablas, ni qué quieres decir”, respondió. Entonces salió al patio delantero, y en ese momento un gallo cantó.

69Al verlo, la criada volvió a decir delante de los que estaban allí: “¡Este hombre es uno de ellos!” 70Y una vez más Pedro lo negó. Al cabo de un rato, ellos volvieron a decirle a Pedro: “¡Definitivamente eres uno de ellos porque eres galileo también!”

71Pedro comenzó a decir maldiciones respecto de sí mismo y juró: “No conozco a este hombre del cual hablan ustedes”. 72E inmediatamente el gallo cantó la segunda vez. Entonces Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús le había dicho: “Antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, me negarás tres veces”. Cuando se dio cuenta de lo que había hecho, rompió a llorar.

MARK 14

Preparation for burial

1It was two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and legal experts through cunning tricks were searching for a way to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2But they agreed that it shouldn’t happen during the festival; otherwise, there would be an uproar among the people.

3Jesus was at Bethany visiting the house of Simon, who had a skin disease. During dinner, a woman came in with a vase made of alabaster and containing very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke open the vase and poured the perfume on his head. 4Some grew angry. They said to each other, “Why waste the perfume? 5This perfume could have been sold for almost a year’s pay and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her.

6Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me. 7You always have the poor with you; and whenever you want, you can do something good for them. But you won’t always have me. 8She has done what she could. She has anointed my body ahead of time for burial. 9I tell you the truth that, wherever in the whole world the good news is announced, what she’s done will also be told in memory of her.”

Passover meal

10Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to give Jesus up to them. 11When they heard it, they were delighted and promised to give him money. So he started looking for an opportunity to turn him in.

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, the disciples said to Jesus, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”

13He sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a water jar will meet you. Follow him. 14Wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher asks,“Where is my guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?”’ 15He will show you a large room upstairs already furnished. Prepare for us there.” 16The disciples left, came into the city, found everything just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

17That evening, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18During the meal, Jesus said, “I assure you that one of you will betray me—someone eating with me.”

19Deeply saddened, they asked him, one by one, “It’s not me, is it?”

20Jesus answered, “It’s one of the Twelve, one who is dipping bread with me into this bowl. 21The Human One goes to his death just as it is written about him. But how terrible it is for that person who betrays the Human One! It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”

22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25I assure you that I won’t drink wine again until that day when I drink it in a new way in God’s kingdom.” 26After singing songs of praise, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Predictions about disciples leaving Jesus

27Jesus said to them, “You will all falter in your faithfulness to me. It is written,I will hit the shepherd, and the sheep will go off in all directions. 28But after I’m raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”

29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else stumbles, I won’t.”

30But Jesus said to him, “I assure you that on this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31But Peter insisted, “If I must die alongside you, I won’t deny you.” And they all said the same thing.

Jesus in prayer

32Jesus and his disciples came to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James, and John along with him. He began to feel despair and was anxious. 34He said to them, “I’m very sad. It’s as if I’m dying. Stay here and keep alert.” 35Then he went a short distance farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, he might be spared the time of suffering. 36He said, “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible. Take this cup of suffering away from me. However—not what I want but what you want.”

37He came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you stay alert for one hour? 38Stay alert and pray so that you won’t give in to temptation. The spirit is eager, but the flesh is weak.”

39Again, he left them and prayed, repeating the same words. 40And, again, when he came back, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open, and they didn’t know how to respond to him. 41He came a third time and said to them, “Will you sleep and rest all night? That’s enough! The time has come for the Human One to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Get up! Let’s go! Look, here comes my betrayer.”

Arrest

43Suddenly, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came with a mob carrying swords and clubs. They had been sent by the chief priests, legal experts, and elders. 44His betrayer had given them a sign: “Arrest the man I kiss, and take him away under guard.”

45As soon as he got there, Judas said to Jesus, “Rabbi!” Then he kissed him. 46Then they came and grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

47One of the bystanders drew a sword and struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his ear. 48Jesus responded, “Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me, like an outlaw? 49Day after day, I was with you, teaching in the temple, but you didn’t arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.” 50And all his disciples left him and ran away. 51One young man, a disciple, was wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They grabbed him, 52but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

A hearing before the Sanhedrin

53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders, and legal experts gathered. 54Peter followed him from a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the guards, warming himself by the fire. 55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they couldn’t find any. 56Many brought false testimony against him, but they contradicted each other. 57Some stood to offer false witness against him, saying, 58“We heard him saying, ‘I will destroy this temple, constructed by humans, and within three days I will build another, one not made by humans.’” 59But their testimonies didn’t agree even on this point.

60Then the high priest stood up in the middle of the gathering and examined Jesus. “Aren’t you going to respond to the testimony these people have brought against you?” 61But Jesus was silent and didn’t answer. Again, the high priest asked, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed one?”

62Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Human One sitting on the right side of the Almighty and coming on the heavenly clouds.”

63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we need any more witnesses? 64You’ve heard his insult against God. What do you think?”

They all condemned him. “He deserves to die!”

65Some began to spit on him. Some covered his face and hit him, saying, “Prophesy!” Then the guards took him and beat him.

Peter denies Jesus

66Meanwhile, Peter was below in the courtyard. A woman, one of the high priest’s servants, approached 67and saw Peter warming himself by the fire. She stared at him and said, “You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus.”

68But he denied it, saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t understand what you’re saying.” And he went outside into the outer courtyard. A rooster crowed.

69The female servant saw him and began a second time to say to those standing around, “This man is one of them.” 70But he denied it again.

A short time later, those standing around again said to Peter, “You must be one of them, because you are also a Galilean.”

71But he cursed and swore, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.” 72At that very moment, a rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered what Jesus told him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down, sobbing.
