제 2 장

에스더가 왕후가 되다

1   그 후에 아하수에로 왕의 노가 그치매 와스디와 그가 행한 일과 그에 대하여 내린 조서를 생각하거늘

2   왕의 측근 신하들이 아뢰되 왕은 왕을 위하여 아리따운 처녀들을 구하게 하시되

3   전국 각 지방에 관리를 명령하여 아리따운 처녀를 다 도성 수산으로 모아 후궁으로 들여 궁녀를 주관하는 내시 헤개의 손에 맡겨 그 몸을 정결하게 하는 물품을 주게 하시고

4   왕의 눈에 아름다운 처녀를 와스디 대신 왕후로 삼으소서 하니 왕이 그 말을 좋게 여겨 그대로 행하니라

5   도성 수산에 한 유다인이 있으니 이름은 모르드개라 그는 베냐민 자손이니 기스의 증손이요 시므이의 손자요 야일의 아들이라

6   전에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에서 유다 왕 여고냐와 백성을 사로잡아 갈 때에 모르드개도 함께 사로잡혔더라

7   그의 삼촌의 딸 하닷사 곧 에스더는 부모가 없었으나 용모가 곱고 아리따운 처녀라 그의 부모가 죽은 후에 모르드개가 자기 딸 같이 양육하더라

8   왕의 조서와 명령이 반포되매 처녀들이 도성 수산에 많이 모여 헤개의 수하에 나아갈 때에 에스더도 왕궁으로 이끌려 가서 궁녀를 주관하는 헤개의 수하에 속하니

9   헤개가 이 처녀를 좋게 보고 은혜를 베풀어 몸을 정결하게 할 물품과 일용품을 곧 주며 또 왕궁에서 으레 주는 일곱 궁녀를 주고 에스더와 그 궁녀들을 후궁 아름다운 처소로 옮기더라

10   에스더가 자기의 민족과 종족을 말하지 아니하니 이는 모르드개가 명령하여 말하지 말라 하였음이라

11   모르드개가 날마다 후궁 뜰 앞으로 왕래하며 에스더의 안부와 어떻게 될지를 알고자 하였더라

12   처녀마다 차례대로 아하수에로 왕에게 나아가기 전에 여자에 대하여 정한 규례대로 열두 달 동안을 행하되 여섯 달은 몰약 기름을 쓰고 여섯 달은 향품과 여자에게 쓰는 다른 물품을 써서 몸을 정결하게 하는 기한을 마치며

13   처녀가 왕에게 나아갈 때에는 그가 구하는 것을 다 주어 후궁에서 왕궁으로 가지고 가게 하고

14   저녁이면 갔다가 아침에는 둘째 후궁으로 돌아와서 비빈을 주관하는 내시 사아스가스의 수하에 속하고 왕이 그를 기뻐하여 그의 이름을 부르지 아니하면 다시 왕에게 나아가지 못하더라

15   모르드개의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸 곧 모르드개가 자기의 딸 같이 양육하는 에스더가 차례대로 왕에게 나아갈 때에 궁녀를 주관하는 내시 헤개가 정한 것 외에는 다른 것을 구하지 아니하였으나 모든 보는 자에게 사랑을 받더라

16   아하수에로 왕의 제칠년 시월 곧 데벳월에 에스더가 왕궁에 인도되어 들어가서 왕 앞에 나가니

17   왕이 모든 여자보다 에스더를 더 사랑하므로 그가 모든 처녀보다 왕 앞에 더 은총을 얻은지라 왕이 그의 머리에 관을 씌우고 와스디를 대신하여 왕후로 삼은 후에

18   왕이 크게 잔치를 베푸니 이는 에스더를 위한 잔치라 모든 지방관과 신하들을 위하여 잔치를 베풀고 또 각 지방의 세금을 면제하고 왕의 이름으로 큰 상을 주니라

모르드개가 왕의 목숨을 구하다

19   처녀들을 다시 모을 때에는 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉았더라

20   에스더는 모르드개가 명령한 대로 그 종족과 민족을 말하지 아니하니 그가 모르드개의 명령을 양육 받을 때와 같이 따름이더라

21   모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉았을 때에 문을 지키던 왕의 내시 빅단과 데레스 두 사람이 원한을 품고 아하수에로 왕을 암살하려는 음모를 꾸미는 것을

22   모르드개가 알고 왕후 에스더에게 알리니 에스더가 모르드개의 이름으로 왕에게 아뢴지라

23   조사하여 실증을 얻었으므로 두 사람을 나무에 달고 그 일을 왕 앞에서 궁중 일기에 기록하니라

#ESTER 2

Ester es proclamada reina

1Pasadas estas cosas, sosegada ya la ira del rey Asuero, se acordó de Vasti y de lo que ella había hecho, y de la sentencia contra ella. 2Y dijeron los criados del rey, sus cortesanos: Busquen para el rey jóvenes vírgenes de buen parecer; 3y ponga el rey personas en todas las provincias de su reino, que lleven a todas las jóvenes vírgenes de buen parecer a Susa, residencia real, a la casa de las mujeres, al cuidado de Hegai eunuco del rey, guarda de las mujeres, y que les den sus atavíos; 4y la doncella que agrade a los ojos del rey, reine en lugar de Vasti. Esto agradó a los ojos del rey, y lo hizo así.

5Había en Susa residencia real un varón judío cuyo nombre era Mardoqueo hijo de Jair, hijo de Simei, hijo de Cis, del linaje de Benjamín; 6el cual había sido transportado de Jerusalén con los cautivos que fueron llevados con Jeconías rey de Judá, a quien hizo transportar Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia. 7Y había criado a Hadasa, es decir, Ester, hija de su tío, porque era huérfana; y la joven era de hermosa figura y de buen parecer. Cuando su padre y su madre murieron, Mardoqueo la adoptó como hija suya.

8Sucedió, pues, que cuando se divulgó el mandamiento y decreto del rey, y habían reunido a muchas doncellas en Susa residencia real, a cargo de Hegai, Ester también fue llevada a la casa del rey, al cuidado de Hegai guarda de las mujeres. 9Y la doncella agradó a sus ojos, y halló gracia delante de él, por lo que hizo darle prontamente atavíos y alimentos, y le dio también siete doncellas especiales de la casa del rey; y la llevó con sus doncellas a lo mejor de la casa de las mujeres. 10Ester no declaró cuál era su pueblo ni su parentela, porque Mardoqueo le había mandado que no lo declarase. 11Y cada día Mardoqueo se paseaba delante del patio de la casa de las mujeres, para saber cómo le iba a Ester, y cómo la trataban.

12Y cuando llegaba el tiempo de cada una de las doncellas para venir al rey Asuero, después de haber estado doce meses conforme a la ley acerca de las mujeres, pues así se cumplía el tiempo de sus atavíos, esto es, seis meses con óleo de mirra y seis meses con perfumes aromáticos y afeites de mujeres, 13entonces la doncella venía así al rey. Todo lo que ella pedía se le daba, para venir ataviada con ello desde la casa de las mujeres hasta la casa del rey. 14Ella venía por la tarde, y a la mañana siguiente volvía a la casa segunda de las mujeres, al cargo de Saasgaz eunuco del rey, guarda de las concubinas; no venía más al rey, salvo si el rey la quería y era llamada por nombre.

15Cuando le llegó a Ester, hija de Abihail tío de Mardoqueo, quien la había tomado por hija, el tiempo de venir al rey, ninguna cosa procuró sino lo que dijo Hegai eunuco del rey, guarda de las mujeres; y ganaba Ester el favor de todos los que la veían. 16Fue, pues, Ester llevada al rey Asuero a su casa real en el mes décimo, que es el mes de Tebet, en el año séptimo de su reinado. 17Y el rey amó a Ester más que a todas las otras mujeres, y halló ella gracia y benevolencia delante de él más que todas las demás vírgenes; y puso la corona real en su cabeza, y la hizo reina en lugar de Vasti. 18Hizo luego el rey un gran banquete a todos sus príncipes y siervos, el banquete de Ester; y disminuyó tributos a las provincias, e hizo y dio mercedes conforme a la generosidad real.

Mardoqueo denuncia una conspiración contra el rey

19Cuando las vírgenes eran reunidas la segunda vez, Mardoqueo estaba sentado a la puerta del rey. 20Y Ester, según le había mandado Mardoqueo, no había declarado su nación ni su pueblo; porque Ester hacía lo que decía Mardoqueo, como cuando él la educaba. 21En aquellos días, estando Mardoqueo sentado a la puerta del rey, se enojaron Bigtán y Teres, dos eunucos del rey, de la guardia de la puerta, y procuraban poner mano en el rey Asuero. 22Cuando Mardoqueo entendió esto, lo denunció a la reina Ester, y Ester lo dijo al rey en nombre de Mardoqueo. 23Se hizo investigación del asunto, y fue hallado cierto; por tanto, los dos eunucos fueron colgados en una horca. Y fue escrito el caso en el libro de las crónicas del rey.

#Esther 2

Esther Chosen Queen

1After these things, when the anger of King Ahasuerus had abated, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against her. 2Then the king’s young men who attended him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought out for the king. 3And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom to gather all the beautiful young virgins to the harem in Susa the citadel, under custody of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women. Let their cosmetics be given them. 4And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This pleased the king, and he did so.

5Now there was a Jew in Susa the citadel whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjaminite, 6who had been carried away from Jerusalem among the captives carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away. 7He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. 8So when the king’s order and his edict were proclaimed, and when many young women were gathered in Susa the citadel in custody of Hegai, Esther also was taken into the king’s palace and put in custody of Hegai, who had charge of the women. 9And the young woman pleased him and won his favor. And he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and her portion of food, and with seven chosen young women from the king’s palace, and advanced her and her young women to the best place in the harem. 10Esther had not made known her people or kindred, for Mordecai had commanded her not to make it known. 11And every day Mordecai walked in front of the court of the harem to learn how Esther was and what was happening to her.

12Now when the turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus, after being twelve months under the regulations for the women, since this was the regular period of their beautifying, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and ointments for women— 13when the young woman went in to the king in this way, she was given whatever she desired to take with her from the harem to the king’s palace. 14In the evening she would go in, and in the morning she would return to the second harem in custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch, who was in charge of the concubines. She would not go in to the king again, unless the king delighted in her and she was summoned by name.

15When the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his own daughter, to go in to the king, she asked for nothing except what Hegai the king’s eunuch, who had charge of the women, advised. Now Esther was winning favor in the eyes of all who saw her. 16And when Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign, 17the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. 18Then the king gave a great feast for all his officials and servants; it was Esther’s feast. He also granted a remission of taxes to the provinces and gave gifts with royal generosity.

Mordecai Discovers a Plot

19Now when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate. 20Esther had not made known her kindred or her people, as Mordecai had commanded her, for Esther obeyed Mordecai just as when she was brought up by him. 21In those days, as Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, became angry and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. 22And this came to the knowledge of Mordecai, and he told it to Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in the name of Mordecai. 23When the affair was investigated and found to be so, the men were both hanged on the gallows. And it was recorded in the book of the chronicles in the presence of the king.
