제 5 장

에스더가 왕과 하만을 잔치에 청하다

1 제삼일에 에스더가 왕후의 예복을 입고 왕궁 안 뜰 곧 어전 맞은편에 서니 왕이 어전에서 전 문을 대하여 왕좌에 앉았다가

2 왕후 에스더가 뜰에 선 것을 본즉 매우 사랑스러우므로 손에 잡았던 금 규를 그에게 내미니 에스더가 가까이 가서 금 규 끝을 만진지라

3 왕이 이르되 왕후 에스더여 그대의 소원이 무엇이며 요구가 무엇이냐 나라의 절반이라도 그대에게 주겠노라 하니

4 에스더가 이르되 오늘 내가 왕을 위하여 잔치를 베풀었사오니 왕이 좋게 여기시거든 하만과 함께 오소서 하니

5 왕이 이르되 에스더가 말한 대로 하도록 하만을 급히 부르라 하고 이에 왕이 하만과 함께 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 가니라

6 잔치의 술을 마실 때에 왕이 에스더에게 이르되 그대의 소청이 무엇이뇨 곧 허락하겠노라 그대의 요구가 무엇이뇨 나라의 절반이라 할지라도 시행하겠노라 하니

7 에스더가 대답하여 이르되 나의 소청, 나의 요구가 이러하니이다

8 내가 만일 왕의 목전에서 은혜를 입었고 왕이 내 소청을 허락하시며 내 요구를 시행하시기를 좋게 여기시면 내가 왕과 하만을 위하여 베푸는 잔치에 또 오소서 내일은 왕의 말씀대로 하리이다 하니라

하만의 음모

9 그 날 하만이 마음이 기뻐 즐거이 나오더니 모르드개가 대궐 문에 있어 일어나지도 아니하고 몸을 움직이지도 아니하는 것을 보고 매우 노하나

10 참고 집에 돌아와서 사람을 보내어 그의 친구들과 그의 아내 세레스를 청하여

11 자기의 큰 영광과 자녀가 많은 것과 왕이 자기를 들어 왕의 모든 지방관이나 신하들보다 높인 것을 다 말하고

12 또 하만이 이르되 왕후 에스더가 그 베푼 잔치에 왕과 함께 오기를 허락 받은 자는 나밖에 없었고 내일도 왕과 함께 청함을 받았느니라

13 그러나 유다 사람 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉은 것을 보는 동안에는 이 모든 일이 만족하지 아니하도다 하니

14 그의 아내 세레스와 모든 친구들이 이르되 높이가 오십 1)규빗 되는 나무를 세우고 내일 왕에게 모르드개를 그 나무에 매달기를 구하고 왕과 함께 즐거이 잔치에 가소서 하니 하만이 그 말을 좋게 여기고 명령하여 나무를 세우니라

Ester invita al rey y a Amán a un banquete

1Aconteció que al tercer día se vistió Ester su vestido real, y entró en el patio interior de la casa del rey, enfrente del aposento del rey; y estaba el rey sentado en su trono en el aposento real, enfrente de la puerta del aposento. 2Y cuando vio a la reina Ester que estaba en el patio, ella obtuvo gracia ante sus ojos; y el rey extendió a Ester el cetro de oro que tenía en la mano. Entonces vino Ester y tocó la punta del cetro. 3Dijo el rey: ¿Qué tienes, reina Ester, y cuál es tu petición? Hasta la mitad del reino se te dará. 4Y Ester dijo: Si place al rey, vengan hoy el rey y Amán al banquete que he preparado para el rey. 5Respondió el rey: Daos prisa, llamad a Amán, para hacer lo que Ester ha dicho. Vino, pues, el rey con Amán al banquete que Ester dispuso.

6Y dijo el rey a Ester en el banquete, mientras bebían vino: ¿Cuál es tu petición, y te será otorgada? ¿Cuál es tu demanda? Aunque sea la mitad del reino, te será concedida. 7Entonces respondió Ester y dijo: Mi petición y mi demanda es esta: 8Si he hallado gracia ante los ojos del rey, y si place al rey otorgar mi petición y conceder mi demanda, que venga el rey con Amán a otro banquete que les prepararé; y mañana haré conforme a lo que el rey ha mandado.

9Y salió Amán aquel día contento y alegre de corazón; pero cuando vio a Mardoqueo a la puerta del palacio del rey, que no se levantaba ni se movía de su lugar, se llenó de ira contra Mardoqueo. 10Pero se refrenó Amán y vino a su casa, y mandó llamar a sus amigos y a Zeres su mujer, 11y les refirió Amán la gloria de sus riquezas, y la multitud de sus hijos, y todas las cosas con que el rey le había engrandecido, y con que le había honrado sobre los príncipes y siervos del rey. 12Y añadió Amán: También la reina Ester a ninguno hizo venir con el rey al banquete que ella dispuso, sino a mí; y también para mañana estoy convidado por ella con el rey. 13Pero todo esto de nada me sirve cada vez que veo al judío Mardoqueo sentado a la puerta del rey. 14Y le dijo Zeres su mujer y todos sus amigos: Hagan una horca de cincuenta codos de altura, y mañana di al rey que cuelguen a Mardoqueo en ella; y entra alegre con el rey al banquete. Y agradó esto a los ojos de Amán, e hizo preparar la horca.

Esther Prepares a Banquet

1 On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king’s palace, in front of the king’s quarters, while the king was sitting on his royal throne inside the throne room opposite the entrance to the palace. 2And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won favor in his sight, and he held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter. 3And the king said to her, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given you, even to the half of my kingdom.” 4And Esther said, “If it please the king, let the king and Haman come today to a feast that I have prepared for the king.” 5Then the king said, “Bring Haman quickly, so that we may do as Esther has asked.” So the king and Haman came to the feast that Esther had prepared. 6And as they were drinking wine after the feast, the king said to Esther, “What is your wish? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled.” 7Then Esther answered, “My wish and my request is: 8If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my wish and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come to the feast that I will prepare for them, and tomorrow I will do as the king has said.”

Haman Plans to Hang Mordecai

9And Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he neither rose nor trembled before him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai. 10Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home, and he sent and brought his friends and his wife Zeresh. 11And Haman recounted to them the splendor of his riches, the number of his sons, all the promotions with which the king had honored him, and how he had advanced him above the officials and the servants of the king. 12Then Haman said, “Even Queen Esther let no one but me come with the king to the feast she prepared. And tomorrow also I am invited by her together with the king. 13Yet all this is worth nothing to me, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.” 14Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows fifty cubits high be made, and in the morning tell the king to have Mordecai hanged upon it. Then go joyfully with the king to the feast.” This idea pleased Haman, and he had the gallows made.
