제 9 장

유다 사람이 대적들을 진멸하다

1   아달월 곧 열두째 달 십삼일은 왕의 어명을 시행하게 된 날이라 유다인의 대적들이 그들을 제거하기를 바랐더니 유다인이 도리어 자기들을 미워하는 자들을 제거하게 된 그 날에

2   유다인들이 아하수에로 왕의 각 지방, 각 읍에 모여 자기들을 해하고자 한 자를 죽이려 하니 모든 민족이 그들을 두려워하여 능히 막을 자가 없고

3   각 지방 모든 지방관과 대신들과 총독들과 왕의 사무를 보는 자들이 모르드개를 두려워하므로 다 유다인을 도우니

4   모르드개가 왕궁에서 존귀하여 점점 창대하매 이 사람 모르드개의 명성이 각 지방에 퍼지더라

5   유다인이 칼로 그 모든 대적들을 쳐서 도륙하고 진멸하고 자기를 미워하는 자에게 마음대로 행하고

6   유다인이 또 도성 수산에서 오백 명을 죽이고 진멸하고

7   또 바산다다와 달본과 아스바다와

8   보라다와 아달리야와 아리다다와

9   바마스다와 아리새와 아리대와 왜사다

10   곧 함므다다의 손자요 유다인의 대적 하만의 열 아들을 죽였으나 그들의 재산에는 손을 대지 아니하였더라

11   그 날에 도성 수산에서 도륙한 자의 수효를 왕께 아뢰니

12   왕이 왕후 에스더에게 이르되 유다인이 도성 수산에서 이미 오백 명을 죽이고 멸하고 또 하만의 열 아들을 죽였으니 왕의 다른 지방에서는 어떠하였겠느냐 이제 그대의 소청이 무엇이냐 곧 허락하겠노라 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐 또한 시행하겠노라 하니

13   에스더가 이르되 왕이 만일 좋게 여기시면 수산에 사는 유다인들이 내일도 오늘 조서대로 행하게 하시고 하만의 열 아들의 시체를 나무에 매달게 하소서 하니

14   왕이 그대로 행하기를 허락하고 조서를 수산에 내리니 하만의 열 아들의 시체가 매달리니라

15   아달월 십사일에도 수산에 있는 유다인이 모여 또 삼백 명을 수산에서 도륙하되 그들의 재산에는 손을 대지 아니하였고

16   왕의 각 지방에 있는 다른 유다인들이 모여 스스로 생명을 보호하여 대적들에게서 벗어나며 자기들을 미워하는 자 칠만 오천 명을 도륙하되 그들의 재산에는 손을 대지 아니하였더라

17   아달월 십삼일에 그 일을 행하였고 십사일에 쉬며 그 날에 잔치를 베풀어 즐겼고

18   수산에 사는 유다인들은 십삼일과 십사일에 모였고 십오일에 쉬며 이 날에 잔치를 베풀어 즐긴지라

19   그러므로 시골의 유다인 곧 성이 없는 고을고을에 사는 자들이 아달월 십사일을 명절로 삼아 잔치를 베풀고 즐기며 서로 예물을 주더라

부림일

20   모르드개가 이 일을 기록하고 아하수에로 왕의 각 지방에 있는 모든 유다인에게 원근을 막론하고 글을 보내어 이르기를

21   한 규례를 세워 해마다 아달월 십사일과 십오일을 지키라

22   이 달 이 날에 유다인들이 대적에게서 벗어나서 평안함을 얻어 슬픔이 변하여 기쁨이 되고 애통이 변하여 길한 날이 되었으니 이 두 날을 지켜 잔치를 베풀고 즐기며 서로 예물을 주며 가난한 자를 구제하라 하매

23   유다인이 자기들이 이미 시작한 대로 또한 모르드개가 보낸 글대로 계속하여 행하였으니

24   곧 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 모든 유다인의 대적 하만이 유다인을 진멸하기를 꾀하고 부르 곧 제비를 뽑아 그들을 죽이고 멸하려 하였으나

25   에스더가 왕 앞에 나아감으로 말미암아 왕이 조서를 내려 하만이 유다인을 해하려던 악한 꾀를 그의 머리에 돌려보내어 하만과 그의 여러 아들을 나무에 달게 하였으므로

26   무리가 부르의 이름을 따라 이 두 날을 부림이라 하고 유다인이 이 글의 모든 말과 이 일에 보고 당한 것으로 말미암아

27   뜻을 정하고 자기들과 자손과 자기들과 화합한 자들이 해마다 그 기록하고 정해 놓은 때 이 두 날을 이어서 지켜 폐하지 아니하기로 작정하고

28   각 지방, 각 읍, 각 집에서 대대로 이 두 날을 기념하여 지키되 이 부림일을 유다인 중에서 폐하지 않게 하고 그들의 후손들이 계속해서 기념하게 하였더라

29   아비하일의 딸 왕후 에스더와 유다인 모르드개가 전권으로 글을 쓰고 부림에 대한 이 둘째 편지를 굳게 지키게 하되

30   화평하고 진실한 말로 편지를 써서 아하수에로의 나라 백이십칠 지방에 있는 유다 모든 사람에게 보내어

31   정한 기간에 이 부림일을 지키게 하였으니 이는 유다인 모르드개와 왕후 에스더가 명령한 바와 유다인이 금식하며 부르짖은 것으로 말미암아 자기와 자기 자손을 위하여 정한 바가 있음이더라

32   에스더의 명령이 이 부림에 대한 일을 견고하게 하였고 그 일이 책에 기록되었더라

Los judíos destruyen a sus enemigos

1En el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, a los trece días del mismo mes, cuando debía ser ejecutado el mandamiento del rey y su decreto, el mismo día en que los enemigos de los judíos esperaban enseñorearse de ellos, sucedió lo contrario; porque los judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían. 2Los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades, en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para descargar su mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal, y nadie los pudo resistir, porque el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos. 3Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, los sátrapas, capitanes y oficiales del rey, apoyaban a los judíos; porque el temor de Mardoqueo había caído sobre ellos. 4Pues Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama iba por todas las provincias; Mardoqueo iba engrandeciéndose más y más. 5Y asolaron los judíos a todos sus enemigos a filo de espada, y con mortandad y destrucción, e hicieron con sus enemigos como quisieron. 6En Susa capital del reino mataron y destruyeron los judíos a quinientos hombres. 7Mataron entonces a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata, 8Porata, Adalía, Aridata, 9Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaizata, 10diez hijos de Amán hijo de Hamedata, enemigo de los judíos; pero no tocaron sus bienes. 11El mismo día se le dio cuenta al rey acerca del número de los muertos en Susa, residencia real.

12Y dijo el rey a la reina Ester: En Susa capital del reino los judíos han matado a quinientos hombres, y a diez hijos de Amán. ¿Qué habrán hecho en las otras provincias del rey? ¿Cuál, pues, es tu petición? y te será concedida; ¿o qué más es tu demanda? y será hecha. 13Y respondió Ester: Si place al rey, concédase también mañana a los judíos en Susa, que hagan conforme a la ley de hoy; y que cuelguen en la horca a los diez hijos de Amán. 14Y mandó el rey que se hiciese así. Se dio la orden en Susa, y colgaron a los diez hijos de Amán. 15Y los judíos que estaban en Susa se juntaron también el catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susa a trescientos hombres; pero no tocaron sus bienes.

La fiesta de Purim

16En cuanto a los otros judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, también se juntaron y se pusieron en defensa de su vida, y descansaron de sus enemigos, y mataron de sus contrarios a setenta y cinco mil; pero no tocaron sus bienes. 17Esto fue en el día trece del mes de Adar, y reposaron en el día catorce del mismo, y lo hicieron día de banquete y de alegría. 18Pero los judíos que estaban en Susa se juntaron el día trece y el catorce del mismo mes, y el quince del mismo reposaron y lo hicieron día de banquete y de regocijo. 19Por tanto, los judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro hacen a los catorce del mes de Adar el día de alegría y de banquete, un día de regocijo, y para enviar porciones cada uno a su vecino.

20Y escribió Mardoqueo estas cosas, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que estaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanos y distantes, 21ordenándoles que celebrasen el día decimocuarto del mes de Adar, y el decimoquinto del mismo, cada año, 22como días en que los judíos tuvieron paz de sus enemigos, y como el mes que de tristeza se les cambió en alegría, y de luto en día bueno; que los hiciesen días de banquete y de gozo, y para enviar porciones cada uno a su vecino, y dádivas a los pobres. 23Y los judíos aceptaron hacer, según habían comenzado, lo que les escribió Mardoqueo. 24Porque Amán hijo de Hamedata agagueo, enemigo de todos los judíos, había ideado contra los judíos un plan para destruirlos, y había echado Pur, que quiere decir suerte, para consumirlos y acabar con ellos. 25Mas cuando Ester vino a la presencia del rey, él ordenó por carta que el perverso designio que aquel trazó contra los judíos recayera sobre su cabeza; y que colgaran a él y a sus hijos en la horca. 26Por esto llamaron a estos días Purim, por el nombre Pur. Y debido a las palabras de esta carta, y por lo que ellos vieron sobre esto, y lo que llevó a su conocimiento, 27los judíos establecieron y tomaron sobre sí, sobre su descendencia y sobre todos los allegados a ellos, que no dejarían de celebrar estos dos días según está escrito tocante a ellos, conforme a su tiempo cada año; 28y que estos días serían recordados y celebrados por todas las generaciones, familias, provincias y ciudades; que estos días de Purim no dejarían de ser guardados por los judíos, y que su descendencia jamás dejaría de recordarlos. 29Y la reina Ester hija de Abihail, y Mardoqueo el judío, suscribieron con plena autoridad esta segunda carta referente a Purim. 30Y fueron enviadas cartas a todos los judíos, a las ciento veintisiete provincias del rey Asuero, con palabras de paz y de verdad, 31para confirmar estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, según les había ordenado Mardoqueo el judío y la reina Ester, y según ellos habían tomado sobre sí y sobre su descendencia, para conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y de su clamor. 32Y el mandamiento de Ester confirmó estas celebraciones acerca de Purim, y esto fue registrado en un libro.

The Jews Destroy Their Enemies

1 Now in the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s command and edict were about to be carried out, on the very day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, the reverse occurred: the Jews gained mastery over those who hated them. 2The Jews gathered in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could stand against them, for the fear of them had fallen on all peoples. 3All the officials of the provinces and the satraps and the governors and the royal agents also helped the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. 4For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew more and more powerful. 5The Jews struck all their enemies with the sword, killing and destroying them, and did as they pleased to those who hated them. 6In Susa the citadel itself the Jews killed and destroyed 500 men, 7and also killed Parshandatha and Dalphon and Aspatha 8and Poratha and Adalia and Aridatha 9and Parmashta and Arisai and Aridai and Vaizatha, 10the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, but they laid no hand on the plunder.

11That very day the number of those killed in Susa the citadel was reported to the king. 12And the king said to Queen Esther, “In Susa the citadel the Jews have killed and destroyed 500 men and also the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your wish? It shall be granted you. And what further is your request? It shall be fulfilled.” 13And Esther said, “If it please the king, let the Jews who are in Susa be allowed tomorrow also to do according to this day’s edict. And let the ten sons of Haman be hanged on the gallows.” 14So the king commanded this to be done. A decree was issued in Susa, and the ten sons of Haman were hanged. 15The Jews who were in Susa gathered also on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and they killed 300 men in Susa, but they laid no hands on the plunder.

16 Now the rest of the Jews who were in the king’s provinces also gathered to defend their lives, and got relief from their enemies and killed 75,000 of those who hated them, but they laid no hands on the plunder. 17This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made that a day of feasting and gladness. 18But the Jews who were in Susa gathered on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and rested on the fifteenth day, making that a day of feasting and gladness. 19Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the rural towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and as a day on which they send gifts of food to one another.

The Feast of Purim Inaugurated

20And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, 22as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.

23So the Jews accepted what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them. 24For Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur (that is, cast lots), to crush and to destroy them. 25But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing that his evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. 26Therefore they called these days Purim, after the term Pur. Therefore, because of all that was written in this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had happened to them, 27the Jews firmly obligated themselves and their offspring and all who joined them, that without fail they would keep these two days according to what was written and at the time appointed every year, 28that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every clan, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants.

29Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew gave full written authority, confirming this second letter about Purim. 30Letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth, 31that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed seasons, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther obligated them, and as they had obligated themselves and their offspring, with regard to their fasts and their lamenting. 32The command of Esther confirmed these practices of Purim, and it was recorded in writing.
