제 4 장

성전 건축을 방해하는 사람들

1   사로잡혔던 자들의 자손이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 성전을 건축한다 함을 유다와 베냐민의 대적이 듣고

2   스룹바벨과 족장들에게 나아와 이르되 우리도 너희와 함께 건축하게 하라 우리도 너희 같이 너희 하나님을 찾노라 앗수르 왕 에살핫돈이 우리를 이리로 오게 한 날부터 우리가 하나님께 제사를 드리노라 하니

3   스룹바벨과 예수아와 기타 이스라엘 족장들이 이르되 우리 하나님의 성전을 건축하는 데 너희는 우리와 상관이 없느니라 바사 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명령하신 대로 우리가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 위하여 홀로 건축하리라 하였더니

4   이로부터 그 땅 백성이 유다 백성의 손을 약하게 하여 그 건축을 방해하되

5   바사 왕 고레스의 시대부터 바사 왕 다리오가 즉위할 때까지 관리들에게 뇌물을 주어 그 계획을 막았으며

6   또 아하수에로가 즉위할 때에 그들이 글을 올려 유다와 예루살렘 주민을 고발하니라

7   아닥사스다 때에 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그의 동료들이 바사 왕 아닥사스다에게 글을 올렸으니 그 글은 아람 문자와 아람 방언으로 써서 진술하였더라

8   방백 르훔과 서기관 심새가 아닥사스다 왕에게 올려 예루살렘 백성을 고발한 그 글에

9   방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그의 동료 디나 사람과 아바삿 사람과 다블래 사람과 아바새 사람과 아렉 사람과 바벨론 사람과 수산 사람과 데해 사람과 엘람 사람과

10   그 밖에 백성 곧 존귀한 오스납발이 사마리아 성과 유브라데 강 건너편 다른 땅에 옮겨 둔 자들과 함께 고발한다 하였더라

11   아닥사스다 왕에게 올린 그 글의 초본은 이러하니 강 건너편에 있는 신하들은

12   왕에게 아뢰나이다 당신에게서 우리에게로 올라온 유다 사람들이 예루살렘에 이르러 이 패역하고 악한 성읍을 건축하는데 이미 그 기초를 수축하고 성곽을 건축하오니

13   이제 왕은 아시옵소서 만일 이 성읍을 건축하고 그 성곽을 완공하면 저 무리가 다시는 조공과 관세와 통행세를 바치지 아니하리니 결국 왕들에게 손해가 되리이다

14   우리가 이제 왕궁의 소금을 먹으므로 왕이 수치 당함을 차마 보지 못하여 사람을 보내어 왕에게 아뢰오니

15   왕은 조상들의 사기를 살펴보시면 그 사기에서 이 성읍은 패역한 성읍이라 예로부터 그 중에서 항상 반역하는 일을 행하여 왕들과 각 도에 손해가 된 것을 보시고 아실지라 이 성읍이 무너짐도 이 때문이니이다

16   이제 감히 왕에게 아뢰오니 이 성읍이 중건되어 성곽이 준공되면 이로 말미암아 왕의 강 건너편 영지가 없어지리이다 하였더라

17   왕이 방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 사마리아에 거주하는 그들 동관들과 강 건너편 다른 땅 백성에게 조서를 내리니 일렀으되 너희는 평안할지어다

18   너희가 올린 글을 내 앞에서 낭독시키고

19   명령하여 살펴보니 과연 이 성읍이 예로부터 왕들을 거역하며 그 중에서 항상 패역하고 반역하는 일을 행하였으며

20   옛적에는 예루살렘을 다스리는 큰 군왕들이 있어서 강 건너편 모든 땅이 그들에게 조공과 관세와 통행세를 다 바쳤도다

21   이제 너희는 명령을 전하여 그 사람들에게 공사를 그치게 하여 그 성을 건축하지 못하게 하고 내가 다시 조서 내리기를 기다리라

22   너희는 삼가서 이 일에 게으르지 말라 어찌하여 화를 더하여 왕들에게 손해가 되게 하랴 하였더라

23   아닥사스다 왕의 조서 초본이 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그의 동료 앞에서 낭독되매 그들이 예루살렘으로 급히 가서 유다 사람들을 보고 권력으로 억제하여 그 공사를 그치게 하니

24   이에 예루살렘에서 하나님의 성전 공사가 바사 왕 다리오 제이년까지 중단되니라

Los adversarios detienen la obra

1Oyendo los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel, 2vinieron a Zorobabel y a los jefes de casas paternas, y les dijeron: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscamos a vuestro Dios, y a él ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo venir aquí. 3Zorobabel, Jesúa, y los demás jefes de casas paternas de Israel dijeron: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos a Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

4Pero el pueblo de la tierra intimidó al pueblo de Judá, y lo atemorizó para que no edificara. 5Sobornaron además contra ellos a los consejeros para frustrar sus propósitos, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

6Y en el reinado de Asuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

7También en días de Artajerjes escribieron Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y los demás compañeros suyos, a Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura y el lenguaje de la carta eran en arameo. 8Rehum canciller y Simsai secretario escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes. 9En tal fecha escribieron Rehum canciller y Simsai secretario, y los demás compañeros suyos los jueces, gobernadores y oficiales, y los de Persia, de Erec, de Babilonia, de Susa, esto es, los elamitas, 10y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar transportó e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria y las demás provincias del otro lado del río. 11Y esta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río te saludan. 12Sea notorio al rey, que los judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros vinieron a Jerusalén; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y levantan los muros y reparan los fundamentos. 13Ahora sea notorio al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren levantados, no pagarán tributo, impuesto y rentas, y el erario de los reyes será menoscabado. 14Siendo que nos mantienen del palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey, por lo cual hemos enviado a hacerlo saber al rey, 15para que se busque en el libro de las memorias de tus padres. Hallarás en el libro de las memorias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones, por lo que esta ciudad fue destruida. 16Hacemos saber al rey que si esta ciudad fuere reedificada, y levantados sus muros, la región de más allá del río no será tuya.

17El rey envió esta respuesta: A Rehum canciller, a Simsai secretario, a los demás compañeros suyos que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río: Salud y paz. 18La carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí. 19Y por mí fue dada orden y buscaron; y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición; 20y que hubo en Jerusalén reyes fuertes que dominaron en todo lo que hay más allá del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuesto y rentas. 21Ahora, pues, dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta que por mí sea dada nueva orden. 22Y mirad que no seáis negligentes en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?

23Entonces, cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario y sus compañeros, fueron apresuradamente a Jerusalén a los judíos, y les hicieron cesar con poder y violencia. 24Entonces cesó la obra de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, y quedó suspendida hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

#Ezra 4

Adversaries Oppose the Rebuilding

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the Lord, the God of Israel, 2they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ houses and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.” 3But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

4Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build 5and bribed counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

The Letter to King Artaxerxes

7In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam and Mithredath and Tabeel and the rest of their associates wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated. 8Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows: 9Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites, 10and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River. 11(This is a copy of the letter that they sent.) “To Artaxerxes the king: Your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River, send greeting. And now 12be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations. 13Now be it known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired. 14Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to witness the king’s dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king, 15in order that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will find in the book of the records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in it from of old. That was why this city was laid waste. 16We make known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls finished, you will then have no possession in the province Beyond the River.”

The King Orders the Work to Cease

17The king sent an answer: “To Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, greeting. And now 18the letter that you sent to us has been plainly read before me. 19And I made a decree, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city from of old has risen against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it. 20And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid. 21Therefore make a decree that these men be made to cease, and that this city be not rebuilt, until a decree is made by me. 22And take care not to be slack in this matter. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the king?”

23Then, when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their associates, they went in haste to the Jews at Jerusalem and by force and power made them cease. 24Then the work on the house of God that is in Jerusalem stopped, and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
