제 9 장

에스라의 회개 기도

1   이 일 후에 방백들이 내게 나아와 이르되 이스라엘 백성과 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 이 땅 백성들에게서 떠나지 아니하고 가나안 사람들과 헷 사람들과 브리스 사람들과 여부스 사람들과 암몬 사람들과 모압 사람들과 애굽 사람들과 아모리 사람들의 가증한 일을 행하여

2   그들의 딸을 맞이하여 아내와 며느리로 삼아 거룩한 자손이 그 지방 사람들과 서로 섞이게 하는데 방백들과 고관들이 이 죄에 더욱 으뜸이 되었다 하는지라

3   내가 이 일을 듣고 속옷과 겉옷을 찢고 머리털과 수염을 뜯으며 기가 막혀 앉으니

4   이에 이스라엘의 하나님의 말씀으로 말미암아 떠는 자가 사로잡혔던 이 사람들의 죄 때문에 다 내게로 모여오더라 내가 저녁 제사 드릴 때까지 기가 막혀 앉았더니

5   저녁 제사를 드릴 때에 내가 근심 중에 일어나서 속옷과 겉옷을 찢은 채 무릎을 꿇고 나의 하나님 여호와를 향하여 손을 들고

6   말하기를 나의 하나님이여 내가 부끄럽고 낯이 뜨거워서 감히 나의 하나님을 향하여 얼굴을 들지 못하오니 이는 우리 죄악이 많아 정수리에 넘치고 우리 허물이 커서 하늘에 미침이니이다

7   우리 조상들의 때로부터 오늘까지 우리의 죄가 심하매 우리의 죄악으로 말미암아 우리와 우리 왕들과 우리 제사장들을 여러 나라 왕들의 손에 넘기사 칼에 죽으며 사로잡히며 노략을 당하며 얼굴을 부끄럽게 하심이 오늘날과 같으니이다

8   이제 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리에게 잠시 동안 은혜를 베푸사 얼마를 남겨 두어 피하게 하신 우리를 그 거룩한 처소에 박힌 못과 같게 하시고 우리 하나님이 우리 눈을 밝히사 우리가 종노릇 하는 중에서 조금 소생하게 하셨나이다

9   우리가 비록 노예가 되었사오나 우리 하나님이 우리를 그 종살이하는 중에 버려 두지 아니하시고 바사 왕들 앞에서 우리가 불쌍히 여김을 입고 소생하여 우리 하나님의 성전을 세우게 하시며 그 무너진 것을 수리하게 하시며 유다와 예루살렘에서 우리에게 울타리를 주셨나이다

10   우리 하나님이여 이렇게 하신 후에도 우리가 주의 계명을 저버렸사오니 이제 무슨 말씀을 하오리이까

11   전에 주께서 주의 종 선지자들에게 명령하여 이르시되 너희가 가서 얻으려 하는 땅은 더러운 땅이니 이는 이방 백성들이 더럽고 가증한 일을 행하여 이 끝에서 저 끝까지 그 더러움으로 채웠음이라

12   그런즉 너희 여자들을 그들의 아들들에게 주지 말고 그들의 딸들을 너희 아들들을 위하여 데려오지 말며 그들을 위하여 평화와 행복을 영원히 구하지 말라 그리하면 너희가 왕성하여 그 땅의 아름다운 것을 먹으며 그 땅을 자손에게 물려 주어 영원한 유산으로 물려 주게 되리라 하셨나이다

13   우리의 악한 행실과 큰 죄로 말미암아 이 모든 일을 당하였사오나 우리 하나님이 우리 죄악보다 형벌을 가볍게 하시고 이만큼 백성을 남겨 주셨사오니

14   우리가 어찌 다시 주의 계명을 거역하고 이 가증한 백성들과 통혼하오리이까 그리하면 주께서 어찌 우리를 멸하시고 남아 피할 자가 없도록 진노하시지 아니하시리이까

15   이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주는 의로우시니 우리가 남아 피한 것이 오늘날과 같사옵거늘 도리어 주께 범죄하였사오니 이로 말미암아 주 앞에 한 사람도 감히 서지 못하겠나이다 하니라

Oración de confesión de Esdras

1Acabadas estas cosas, los príncipes vinieron a mí, diciendo: El pueblo de Israel y los sacerdotes y levitas no se han separado de los pueblos de las tierras, de los cananeos, heteos, ferezeos, jebuseos, amonitas, moabitas, egipcios y amorreos, y hacen conforme a sus abominaciones. 2Porque han tomado de las hijas de ellos para sí y para sus hijos, y el linaje santo ha sido mezclado con los pueblos de las tierras; y la mano de los príncipes y de los gobernadores ha sido la primera en cometer este pecado. 3Cuando oí esto, rasgué mi vestido y mi manto, y arranqué pelo de mi cabeza y de mi barba, y me senté angustiado en extremo. 4Y se me juntaron todos los que temían las palabras del Dios de Israel, a causa de la prevaricación de los del cautiverio; mas yo estuve muy angustiado hasta la hora del sacrificio de la tarde. 5Y a la hora del sacrificio de la tarde me levanté de mi aflicción, y habiendo rasgado mi vestido y mi manto, me postré de rodillas, y extendí mis manos a Jehová mi Dios, 6y dije:

Dios mío, confuso y avergonzado estoy para levantar, oh Dios mío, mi rostro a ti, porque nuestras iniquidades se han multiplicado sobre nuestra cabeza, y nuestros delitos han crecido hasta el cielo. 7Desde los días de nuestros padres hasta este día hemos vivido en gran pecado; y por nuestras iniquidades nosotros, nuestros reyes y nuestros sacerdotes hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de las tierras, a espada, a cautiverio, a robo, y a vergüenza que cubre nuestro rostro, como hoy día. 8Y ahora por un breve momento ha habido misericordia de parte de Jehová nuestro Dios, para hacer que nos quedase un remanente libre, y para darnos un lugar seguro en su santuario, a fin de alumbrar nuestro Dios nuestros ojos y darnos un poco de vida en nuestra servidumbre. 9Porque siervos somos; mas en nuestra servidumbre no nos ha desamparado nuestro Dios, sino que inclinó sobre nosotros su misericordia delante de los reyes de Persia, para que se nos diese vida para levantar la casa de nuestro Dios y restaurar sus ruinas, y darnos protección en Judá y en Jerusalén.

10Pero ahora, ¿qué diremos, oh Dios nuestro, después de esto? Porque nosotros hemos dejado tus mandamientos, 11que prescribiste por medio de tus siervos los profetas, diciendo: La tierra a la cual entráis para poseerla, tierra inmunda es a causa de la inmundicia de los pueblos de aquellas regiones, por las abominaciones de que la han llenado de uno a otro extremo con su inmundicia. 12Ahora, pues, no daréis vuestras hijas a los hijos de ellos, ni sus hijas tomaréis para vuestros hijos, ni procuraréis jamás su paz ni su prosperidad; para que seáis fuertes y comáis el bien de la tierra, y la dejéis por heredad a vuestros hijos para siempre. 13Mas después de todo lo que nos ha sobrevenido a causa de nuestras malas obras, y a causa de nuestro gran pecado, ya que tú, Dios nuestro, no nos has castigado de acuerdo con nuestras iniquidades, y nos diste un remanente como este, 14¿hemos de volver a infringir tus mandamientos, y a emparentar con pueblos que cometen estas abominaciones? ¿No te indignarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, sin que quedara remanente ni quien escape? 15Oh Jehová Dios de Israel, tú eres justo, puesto que hemos quedado un remanente que ha escapado, como en este día. Henos aquí delante de ti en nuestros delitos; porque no es posible estar en tu presencia a causa de esto.

Ezra Prays About Intermarriage

1After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.” 3As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and sat appalled. 4Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice. 5And at the evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God, 6saying:

“O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens. 7From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today. 8But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery. 9For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection in Judea and Jerusalem.

10“And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness. 12Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’ 13And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this, 14shall we break your commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape? 15O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.”
