제 1 장
느헤미야가 예루살렘을 두고 기도하다
1 하가랴의 아들 느헤미야의 말이라
아닥사스다 왕 제이십년 기슬르월에 내가 수산 궁에 있는데
2 내 형제들 가운데 하나인 하나니가 두어 사람과 함께 유다에서 내게 이르렀기로 내가 그 사로잡힘을 면하고 남아 있는 유다와 예루살렘 사람들의 형편을 물은즉
3 그들이 내게 이르되 사로잡힘을 면하고 남아 있는 자들이 그 지방 거기에서 큰 환난을 당하고 능욕을 받으며 예루살렘 성은 허물어지고 성문들은 불탔다 하는지라
4 내가 이 말을 듣고 앉아서 울고 수일 동안 슬퍼하며 하늘의 하나님 앞에 금식하며 기도하여
5 이르되 하늘의 하나님 여호와 크고 두려우신 하나님이여 주를 사랑하고 주의 계명을 지키는 자에게 언약을 지키시며 긍휼을 베푸시는 주여 간구하나이다
6 이제 종이 주의 종들인 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 주야로 기도하오며 우리 이스라엘 자손이 주께 범죄한 죄들을 자복하오니 주는 귀를 기울이시며 눈을 여시사 종의 기도를 들으시옵소서 나와 내 아버지의 집이 범죄하여
7 주를 향하여 크게 악을 행하여 주께서 주의 종 모세에게 명령하신 계명과 율례와 규례를 지키지 아니하였나이다
8 옛적에 주께서 주의 종 모세에게 명령하여 이르시되 만일 너희가 범죄하면 내가 너희를 여러 나라 가운데에 흩을 것이요
9 만일 내게로 돌아와 내 계명을 지켜 행하면 너희 쫓긴 자가 하늘 끝에 있을지라도 내가 거기서부터 그들을 모아 내 이름을 두려고 택한 곳에 돌아오게 하리라 하신 말씀을 이제 청하건대 기억하옵소서
10 이들은 주께서 일찍이 큰 권능과 강한 손으로 구속하신 주의 종들이요 주의 백성이니이다
11 주여 구하오니 귀를 기울이사 종의 기도와 주의 이름을 경외하기를 기뻐하는 종들의 기도를 들으시고 오늘 종이 형통하여 이 사람 앞에서 은혜를 입게 하옵소서 하였나니 그 때에 내가 왕의 술 관원이 되었느니라

1Palabras de Nehemías hijo de Hacalías. Aconteció en el mes de Quisleu, en el año veinte, estando yo en Susa, capital del reino, 2que vino Hanani, uno de mis hermanos, con algunos varones de Judá, y les pregunté por los judíos que habían escapado, que habían quedado de la cautividad, y por Jerusalén. 3Y me dijeron: El remanente, los que quedaron de la cautividad, allí en la provincia, están en gran mal y afrenta, y el muro de Jerusalén derribado, y sus puertas quemadas a fuego.
4Cuando oí estas palabras me senté y lloré, e hice duelo por algunos días, y ayuné y oré delante del Dios de los cielos. 5Y dije: Te ruego, oh Jehová, Dios de los cielos, fuerte, grande y temible, que guarda el pacto y la misericordia a los que le aman y guardan sus mandamientos; 6esté ahora atento tu oído y abiertos tus ojos para oír la oración de tu siervo, que hago ahora delante de ti día y noche, por los hijos de Israel tus siervos; y confieso los pecados de los hijos de Israel que hemos cometido contra ti; sí, yo y la casa de mi padre hemos pecado. 7En extremo nos hemos corrompido contra ti, y no hemos guardado los mandamientos, estatutos y preceptos que diste a Moisés tu siervo. 8Acuérdate ahora de la palabra que diste a Moisés tu siervo, diciendo: Si vosotros pecareis, yo os dispersaré por los pueblos; 9pero si os volviereis a mí, y guardareis mis mandamientos, y los pusiereis por obra, aunque vuestra dispersión fuere hasta el extremo de los cielos, de allí os recogeré, y os traeré al lugar que escogí para hacer habitar allí mi nombre. 10Ellos, pues, son tus siervos y tu pueblo, los cuales redimiste con tu gran poder, y con tu mano poderosa. 11Te ruego, oh Jehová, esté ahora atento tu oído a la oración de tu siervo, y a la oración de tus siervos, quienes desean reverenciar tu nombre; concede ahora buen éxito a tu siervo, y dale gracia delante de aquel varón. Porque yo servía de copero al rey.

Report from Jerusalem
1The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah.
Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the citadel, 2that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem. 3And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.”
Nehemiah’s Prayer
4As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned. 7We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses. 8Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, 9but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 10They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
Now I was cupbearer to the king.
