제 2 장

느헤미야가 예루살렘으로 가다

1   아닥사스다 왕 제이십년 니산월에 왕 앞에 포도주가 있기로 내가 그 포도주를 왕에게 드렸는데 이전에는 내가 왕 앞에서 수심이 없었더니

2   왕이 내게 이르시되 네가 병이 없거늘 어찌하여 얼굴에 수심이 있느냐 이는 필연 네 마음에 근심이 있음이로다 하더라 그 때에 내가 크게 두려워하여

3   왕께 대답하되 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 내 조상들의 묘실이 있는 성읍이 이제까지 황폐하고 성문이 불탔사오니 내가 어찌 얼굴에 수심이 없사오리이까 하니

4   왕이 내게 이르시되 그러면 네가 무엇을 원하느냐 하시기로 내가 곧 하늘의 하나님께 묵도하고

5   왕에게 아뢰되 왕이 만일 좋게 여기시고 종이 왕의 목전에서 은혜를 얻었사오면 나를 유다 땅 나의 조상들의 묘실이 있는 성읍에 보내어 그 성을 건축하게 하옵소서 하였는데

6   그 때에 왕후도 왕 곁에 앉아 있었더라 왕이 내게 이르시되 네가 몇 날에 다녀올 길이며 어느 때에 돌아오겠느냐 하고 왕이 나를 보내기를 좋게 여기시기로 내가 기한을 정하고

7   내가 또 왕에게 아뢰되 왕이 만일 좋게 여기시거든 강 서쪽 총독들에게 내리시는 조서를 내게 주사 그들이 나를 용납하여 유다에 들어가기까지 통과하게 하시고

8   또 왕의 삼림 감독 아삽에게 조서를 내리사 그가 성전에 속한 영문의 문과 성곽과 내가 들어갈 집을 위하여 들보로 쓸 재목을 내게 주게 하옵소서 하매 내 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우시므로 왕이 허락하고

9   군대 장관과 마병을 보내어 나와 함께 하게 하시기로 내가 강 서쪽에 있는 총독들에게 이르러 왕의 조서를 전하였더니

10   호론 사람 산발랏과 종이었던 암몬 사람 도비야가 이스라엘 자손을 흥왕하게 하려는 사람이 왔다 함을 듣고 심히 근심하더라

11   내가 예루살렘에 이르러 머무른 지 사흘 만에

12   내 하나님께서 예루살렘을 위해 무엇을 할 것인지 내 마음에 주신 것을 내가 아무에게도 말하지 아니하고 밤에 일어나 몇몇 사람과 함께 나갈새 내가 탄 짐승 외에는 다른 짐승이 없더라

13   그 밤에 골짜기 문으로 나가서 용정으로 분문에 이르는 동안에 보니 예루살렘 성벽이 다 무너졌고 성문은 불탔더라

14   앞으로 나아가 샘문과 왕의 못에 이르러서는 탄 짐승이 지나갈 곳이 없는지라

15   그 밤에 시내를 따라 올라가서 성벽을 살펴본 후에 돌아서 골짜기 문으로 들어와 돌아왔으나

16   방백들은 내가 어디 갔었으며 무엇을 하였는지 알지 못하였고 나도 그 일을 유다 사람들에게나 제사장들에게나 귀족들에게나 방백들에게나 그 외에 일하는 자들에게 알리지 아니하다가

17   후에 그들에게 이르기를 우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라 예루살렘이 황폐하고 성문이 불탔으니 자, 예루살렘 성을 건축하여 다시 수치를 당하지 말자 하고

18   또 그들에게 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우신 일과 왕이 내게 이른 말씀을 전하였더니 그들의 말이 일어나 건축하자 하고 모두 힘을 내어 이 선한 일을 하려 하매

19   호론 사람 산발랏과 종이었던 암몬 사람 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈이 이 말을 듣고 우리를 업신여기고 우리를 비웃어 이르되 너희가 하는 일이 무엇이냐 너희가 왕을 배반하고자 하느냐 하기로

20   내가 그들에게 대답하여 이르되 하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하시리니 그의 종들인 우리가 일어나 건축하려니와 오직 너희에게는 예루살렘에서 아무 기업도 없고 권리도 없고 기억되는 바도 없다 하였느니라

Artajerjes envía a Nehemías a Jerusalén

1Sucedió en el mes de Nisán, en el año veinte del rey Artajerjes, que estando ya el vino delante de él, tomé el vino y lo serví al rey. Y como yo no había estado antes triste en su presencia, 2me dijo el rey: ¿Por qué está triste tu rostro? pues no estás enfermo. No es esto sino quebranto de corazón. Entonces temí en gran manera. 3Y dije al rey: Para siempre viva el rey. ¿Cómo no estará triste mi rostro, cuando la ciudad, casa de los sepulcros de mis padres, está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego? 4Me dijo el rey: ¿Qué cosa pides? Entonces oré al Dios de los cielos, 5y dije al rey: Si le place al rey, y tu siervo ha hallado gracia delante de ti, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad de los sepulcros de mis padres, y la reedificaré. 6Entonces el rey me dijo (y la reina estaba sentada junto a él): ¿Cuánto durará tu viaje, y cuándo volverás? Y agradó al rey enviarme, después que yo le señalé tiempo.

7Además dije al rey: Si le place al rey, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores al otro lado del río, para que me franqueen el paso hasta que llegue a Judá; 8y carta para Asaf guarda del bosque del rey, para que me dé madera para enmaderar las puertas del palacio de la casa, y para el muro de la ciudad, y la casa en que yo estaré. Y me lo concedió el rey, según la benéfica mano de mi Dios sobre mí.

9Vine luego a los gobernadores del otro lado del río, y les di las cartas del rey. Y el rey envió conmigo capitanes del ejército y gente de a caballo. 10Pero oyéndolo Sanbalat horonita y Tobías el siervo amonita, les disgustó en extremo que viniese alguno para procurar el bien de los hijos de Israel.

Nehemías anima al pueblo a reedificar los muros

11Llegué, pues, a Jerusalén, y después de estar allí tres días, 12me levanté de noche, yo y unos pocos varones conmigo, y no declaré a hombre alguno lo que Dios había puesto en mi corazón que hiciese en Jerusalén; ni había cabalgadura conmigo, excepto la única en que yo cabalgaba. 13Y salí de noche por la puerta del Valle hacia la fuente del Dragón y a la puerta del Muladar; y observé los muros de Jerusalén que estaban derribados, y sus puertas que estaban consumidas por el fuego. 14Pasé luego a la puerta de la Fuente, y al estanque del Rey; pero no había lugar por donde pasase la cabalgadura en que iba. 15Y subí de noche por el torrente y observé el muro, y di la vuelta y entré por la puerta del Valle, y me volví. 16Y no sabían los oficiales a dónde yo había ido, ni qué había hecho; ni hasta entonces lo había declarado yo a los judíos y sacerdotes, ni a los nobles y oficiales, ni a los demás que hacían la obra.

17Les dije, pues: Vosotros veis el mal en que estamos, que Jerusalén está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego; venid, y edifiquemos el muro de Jerusalén, y no estemos más en oprobio. 18Entonces les declaré cómo la mano de mi Dios había sido buena sobre mí, y asimismo las palabras que el rey me había dicho. Y dijeron: Levantémonos y edifiquemos. Así esforzaron sus manos para bien. 19Pero cuando lo oyeron Sanbalat horonita, Tobías el siervo amonita, y Gesem el árabe, hicieron escarnio de nosotros, y nos despreciaron, diciendo: ¿Qué es esto que hacéis vosotros? ¿Os rebeláis contra el rey? 20Y en respuesta les dije: El Dios de los cielos, él nos prosperará, y nosotros sus siervos nos levantaremos y edificaremos, porque vosotros no tenéis parte ni derecho ni memoria en Jerusalén.

Nehemiah Sent to Judah

1In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence. 2And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid. 3I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” 4Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven. 5And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ graves, that I may rebuild it.” 6And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), “How long will you be gone, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time. 7And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah, 8and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.

Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls

9Then I came to the governors of the province Beyond the River and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen. 10But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel.

11 So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. 12Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode. 13I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire. 14Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King’s Pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass. 15Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall, and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. 16And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.

17Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” 18And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. 19But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” 20Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.”
