제 4 장

방해를 물리치다

1   산발랏이 우리가 성을 건축한다 함을 듣고 크게 분노하여 유다 사람들을 비웃으며

2   자기 형제들과 사마리아 군대 앞에서 일러 말하되 이 미약한 유다 사람들이 하는 일이 무엇인가, 스스로 견고하게 하려는가, 제사를 드리려는가, 하루에 일을 마치려는가 불탄 돌을 흙 무더기에서 다시 일으키려는가 하고

3   암몬 사람 도비야는 곁에 있다가 이르되 그들이 건축하는 돌 성벽은 여우가 올라가도 곧 무너지리라 하더라

4   우리 하나님이여 들으시옵소서 우리가 업신여김을 당하나이다 원하건대 그들이 욕하는 것을 자기들의 머리에 돌리사 노략거리가 되어 이방에 사로잡히게 하시고

5   주 앞에서 그들의 악을 덮어 두지 마시며 그들의 죄를 도말하지 마옵소서 그들이 건축하는 자 앞에서 주를 노하시게 하였음이니이다 하고

6   이에 우리가 성을 건축하여 전부가 연결되고 높이가 절반에 이르렀으니 이는 백성이 마음 들여 일을 하였음이니라

7   산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람들과 암몬 사람들과 아스돗 사람들이 예루살렘 성이 중수되어 그 허물어진 틈이 메꾸어져 간다 함을 듣고 심히 분노하여

8   다 함께 꾀하기를 예루살렘으로 가서 치고 그 곳을 요란하게 하자 하기로

9   우리가 우리 하나님께 기도하며 그들로 말미암아 파수꾼을 두어 주야로 방비하는데

10   유다 사람들은 이르기를 흙 무더기가 아직도 많거늘 짐을 나르는 자의 힘이 다 빠졌으니 우리가 성을 건축하지 못하리라 하고

11   우리의 원수들은 이르기를 그들이 알지 못하고 보지 못하는 사이에 우리가 그들 가운데 달려 들어가서 살륙하여 역사를 그치게 하리라 하고

12   그 원수들의 근처에 거주하는 유다 사람들도 그 각처에서 와서 열 번이나 우리에게 말하기를 너희가 우리에게로 와야 하리라 하기로

13   내가 성벽 뒤의 낮고 넓은 곳에 백성이 그들의 종족을 따라 칼과 창과 활을 가지고 서 있게 하고

14   내가 돌아본 후에 일어나서 귀족들과 민장들과 남은 백성에게 말하기를 너희는 그들을 두려워하지 말고 지극히 크시고 두려우신 주를 기억하고 너희 형제와 자녀와 아내와 집을 위하여 싸우라 하였느니라

15   우리의 대적이 우리가 그들의 의도를 눈치챘다 함을 들으니라 하나님이 그들의 꾀를 폐하셨으므로 우리가 다 성에 돌아와서 각각 일하였는데

16   그 때로부터 내 수하 사람들의 절반은 일하고 절반은 갑옷을 입고 창과 방패와 활을 가졌고 민장은 유다 온 족속의 뒤에 있었으며

17   성을 건축하는 자와 짐을 나르는 자는 다 각각 한 손으로 일을 하며 한 손에는 병기를 잡았는데

18   건축하는 자는 각각 허리에 칼을 차고 건축하며 나팔 부는 자는 내 곁에 섰었느니라

19   내가 귀족들과 민장들과 남은 백성에게 이르기를 이 공사는 크고 넓으므로 우리가 성에서 떨어져 거리가 먼즉

20   너희는 어디서든지 나팔 소리를 듣거든 그리로 모여서 우리에게로 나아오라 우리 하나님이 우리를 위하여 싸우시리라 하였느니라

21   우리가 이같이 공사하는데 무리의 절반은 동틀 때부터 별이 나기까지 창을 잡았으며

22   그 때에 내가 또 백성에게 말하기를 사람마다 그 종자와 함께 예루살렘 안에서 잘지니 밤에는 우리를 위하여 파수하겠고 낮에는 일하리라 하고

23   나나 내 형제들이나 종자들이나 나를 따라 파수하는 사람들이나 우리가 다 우리의 옷을 벗지 아니하였으며 물을 길으러 갈 때에도 각각 병기를 잡았느니라

Precauciones contra los enemigos

1Cuando oyó Sanbalat que nosotros edificábamos el muro, se enojó y se enfureció en gran manera, e hizo escarnio de los judíos. 2Y habló delante de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria, y dijo: ¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Se les permitirá volver a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acabarán en un día? ¿Resucitarán de los montones del polvo las piedras que fueron quemadas? 3Y estaba junto a él Tobías amonita, el cual dijo: Lo que ellos edifican del muro de piedra, si subiere una zorra lo derribará. 4Oye, oh Dios nuestro, que somos objeto de su menosprecio, y vuelve el baldón de ellos sobre su cabeza, y entrégalos por despojo en la tierra de su cautiverio. 5No cubras su iniquidad, ni su pecado sea borrado delante de ti, porque se airaron contra los que edificaban. 6Edificamos, pues, el muro, y toda la muralla fue terminada hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tuvo ánimo para trabajar.

7Pero aconteció que oyendo Sanbalat y Tobías, y los árabes, los amonitas y los de Asdod, que los muros de Jerusalén eran reparados, porque ya los portillos comenzaban a ser cerrados, se encolerizaron mucho; 8y conspiraron todos a una para venir a atacar a Jerusalén y hacerle daño. 9Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y por causa de ellos pusimos guarda contra ellos de día y de noche. 10Y dijo Judá: Las fuerzas de los acarreadores se han debilitado, y el escombro es mucho, y no podemos edificar el muro. 11Y nuestros enemigos dijeron: No sepan, ni vean, hasta que entremos en medio de ellos y los matemos, y hagamos cesar la obra. 12Pero sucedió que cuando venían los judíos que habitaban entre ellos, nos decían hasta diez veces: De todos los lugares de donde volviereis, ellos caerán sobre vosotros.

13Entonces por las partes bajas del lugar, detrás del muro, y en los sitios abiertos, puse al pueblo por familias, con sus espadas, con sus lanzas y con sus arcos. 14Después miré, y me levanté y dije a los nobles y a los oficiales, y al resto del pueblo: No temáis delante de ellos; acordaos del Señor, grande y temible, y pelead por vuestros hermanos, por vuestros hijos y por vuestras hijas, por vuestras mujeres y por vuestras casas. 15Y cuando oyeron nuestros enemigos que lo habíamos entendido, y que Dios había desbaratado el consejo de ellos, nos volvimos todos al muro, cada uno a su tarea. 16Desde aquel día la mitad de mis siervos trabajaba en la obra, y la otra mitad tenía lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas; y detrás de ellos estaban los jefes de toda la casa de Judá. 17Los que edificaban en el muro, los que acarreaban, y los que cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra, y en la otra tenían la espada. 18Porque los que edificaban, cada uno tenía su espada ceñida a sus lomos, y así edificaban; y el que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí.

19Y dije a los nobles, y a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: La obra es grande y extensa, y nosotros estamos apartados en el muro, lejos unos de otros. 20En el lugar donde oyereis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros. 21Nosotros, pues, trabajábamos en la obra; y la mitad de ellos tenían lanzas desde la subida del alba hasta que salían las estrellas. 22También dije entonces al pueblo: Cada uno con su criado permanezca dentro de Jerusalén, y de noche sirvan de centinela y de día en la obra. 23Y ni yo ni mis hermanos, ni mis jóvenes, ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, nos quitamos nuestro vestido; cada uno se desnudaba solamente para bañarse.

#Nehemiah 4

Opposition to the Work

1 Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. 2And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?” 3Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Yes, what they are building—if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!” 4Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. 5Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.

6So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

7 But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. 8And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. 9And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.

10In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” 11And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.” 12At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.” 13So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”

The Work Resumes

15When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work. 16From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, 17who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. 18And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 19And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. 20In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

21So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. 22I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.” 23So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand.
