제 6 장

느헤미야에 대한 음모

1   산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈과 그 나머지 우리의 원수들이 내가 성벽을 건축하여 허물어진 틈을 남기지 아니하였다 함을 들었는데 그 때는 내가 아직 성문에 문짝을 달지 못한 때였더라

2   산발랏과 게셈이 내게 사람을 보내어 이르기를 오라 우리가 오노 평지 한 촌에서 서로 만나자 하니 실상은 나를 해하고자 함이었더라

3   내가 곧 그들에게 사자들을 보내어 이르기를 내가 이제 큰 역사를 하니 내려가지 못하겠노라 어찌하여 역사를 중지하게 하고 너희에게로 내려가겠느냐 하매

4   그들이 네 번이나 이같이 내게 사람을 보내되 나는 꼭 같이 대답하였더니

5   산발랏이 다섯 번째는 그 종자의 손에 봉하지 않은 편지를 들려 내게 보냈는데

6   그 글에 이르기를 이방 중에도 소문이 있고 가스무도 말하기를 너와 유다 사람들이 모반하려 하여 성벽을 건축한다 하나니 네가 그 말과 같이 왕이 되려 하는도다

7   또 네가 선지자를 세워 예루살렘에서 너를 들어 선전하기를 유다에 왕이 있다 하게 하였으니 지금 이 말이 왕에게 들릴지라 그런즉 너는 이제 오라 함께 의논하자 하였기로

8   내가 사람을 보내어 그에게 이르기를 네가 말한 바 이런 일은 없는 일이요 네 마음에서 지어낸 것이라 하였나니

9   이는 그들이 다 우리를 두렵게 하고자 하여 말하기를 그들의 손이 피곤하여 역사를 중지하고 이루지 못하리라 함이라 이제 내 손을 힘있게 하옵소서 하였노라

10   이 후에 므헤다벨의 손자 들라야의 아들 스마야가 두문불출 하기로 내가 그 집에 가니 그가 이르기를 그들이 너를 죽이러 올 터이니 우리가 하나님의 전으로 가서 외소 안에 머물고 그 문을 닫자 저들이 반드시 밤에 와서 너를 죽이리라 하기로

11   내가 이르기를 나 같은 자가 어찌 도망하며 나 같은 몸이면 누가 외소에 들어가서 생명을 보존하겠느냐 나는 들어가지 않겠노라 하고

12   깨달은즉 그는 하나님께서 보내신 바가 아니라 도비야와 산발랏에게 뇌물을 받고 내게 이런 예언을 함이라

13   그들이 뇌물을 준 까닭은 나를 두렵게 하고 이렇게 함으로 범죄하게 하고 악한 말을 지어 나를 비방하려 함이었느니라

14   내 하나님이여 도비야와 산발랏과 여선지 노아댜와 그 남은 선지자들 곧 나를 두렵게 하고자 한 자들의 소행을 기억하옵소서 하였노라

성벽 공사가 끝나다

15   성벽 역사가 오십이 일 만인 엘룰월 이십오일에 끝나매

16   우리의 모든 대적과 주위에 있는 이방 족속들이 이를 듣고 다 두려워하여 크게 낙담하였으니 그들이 우리 하나님께서 이 역사를 이루신 것을 앎이니라

17   또한 그 때에 유다의 귀족들이 여러 번 도비야에게 편지하였고 도비야의 편지도 그들에게 이르렀으니

18   도비야는 아라의 아들 스가냐의 사위가 되었고 도비야의 아들 여호하난도 베레갸의 아들 므술람의 딸을 아내로 맞이하였으므로 유다에서 그와 동맹한 자가 많음이라

19   그들이 도비야의 선행을 내 앞에 말하고 또 내 말도 그에게 전하매 도비야가 내게 편지하여 나를 두렵게 하고자 하였느니라

Maquinaciones de los adversarios

1Cuando oyeron Sanbalat y Tobías y Gesem el árabe, y los demás de nuestros enemigos, que yo había edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto las hojas en las puertas), 2Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme: Ven y reunámonos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono. Mas ellos habían pensado hacerme mal. 3Y les envié mensajeros, diciendo: Yo hago una gran obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir a vosotros. 4Y enviaron a mí con el mismo asunto hasta cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera. 5Entonces Sanbalat envió a mí su criado para decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano, 6en la cual estaba escrito: Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey; 7y que has puesto profetas que proclamen acerca de ti en Jerusalén, diciendo: ¡Hay rey en Judá! Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras; ven, por tanto, y consultemos juntos. 8Entonces envié yo a decirle: No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas. 9Porque todos ellos nos amedrentaban, diciendo: Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será terminada. Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece tú mis manos. 10Vine luego a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaía, hijo de Mehetabel, porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo: Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte. 11Entonces dije: ¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al templo para salvarse la vida? No entraré. 12Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían sobornado. 13Porque fue sobornado para hacerme temer así, y que pecase, y les sirviera de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado. 14Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas cosas que hicieron; también acuérdate de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que procuraban infundirme miedo.

15Fue terminado, pues, el muro, el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días. 16Y cuando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros, y se sintieron humillados, y conocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.

17Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los principales de Judá a Tobías, y las de Tobías venían a ellos. 18Porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él, porque era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado por mujer a la hija de Mesulam hijo de Berequías. 19También contaban delante de mí las buenas obras de él, y a él le referían mis palabras. Y enviaba Tobías cartas para atemorizarme.

#Nehemiah 6

Conspiracy Against Nehemiah

1Now when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates), 2Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. 3And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” 4And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner. 5In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. 6In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king. 7And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, ‘There is a king in Judah.’ And now the king will hear of these reports. So now come and let us take counsel together.” 8Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind.” 9For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.

10Now when I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his home, he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple. Let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill you by night.” 11But I said, “Should such a man as I run away? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.” 12And I understood and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me a bad name in order to taunt me. 14Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.

The Wall Is Finished

15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. 17Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them. 18For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife. 19Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.
