제 20 장

아람과 이스라엘의 싸움

1 아람의 벤하닷 왕이 그의 군대를 다 모으니 왕 삼십이 명이 그와 함께 있고 또 말과 병거들이 있더라 이에 올라가서 사마리아를 에워싸고 그 곳을 치며

2 사자들을 성 안에 있는 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 보내 이르기를 벤하닷이 그에게 이르되

3 네 은금은 내 것이요 네 아내들과 네 자녀들의 아름다운 자도 내 것이니라 하매

4 이스라엘의 왕이 대답하여 말하기를 내 주 왕이여 왕의 말씀 같이 나와 내 것은 다 왕의 것이니이다 하였더니

5 사신들이 다시 와서 이르되 벤하닷이 이르노라 내가 이미 네게 사람을 보내어 말하기를 너는 네 은금과 아내들과 자녀들을 내게 넘기라 하였거니와

6 내일 이맘때에 내가 내 신하들을 네게 보내리니 그들이 네 집과 네 신하들의 집을 수색하여 네 눈이 기뻐하는 것을 그들의 손으로 잡아 가져가리라 한지라

7 이에 이스라엘 왕이 나라의 장로를 다 불러 이르되 너희는 이 사람이 악을 도모하고 있는 줄을 자세히 알라 그가 내 아내들과 내 자녀들과 내 은금을 빼앗으려고 사람을 내게 보냈으나 내가 거절하지 못하였노라

8 모든 장로와 백성들이 다 왕께 아뢰되 왕은 듣지도 말고 허락하지도 마옵소서 한지라

9 그러므로 왕이 벤하닷의 사신들에게 이르되 너희는 내 주 왕께 말하기를 왕이 처음에 보내 종에게 구하신 것은 내가 다 그대로 하려니와 이것은 내가 할 수 없나이다 하라 하니 사자들이 돌아가서 보고하니라

10 그 때에 벤하닷이 다시 그에게 사람을 보내어 이르되 사마리아의 1)부스러진 것이 나를 따르는 백성의 무리의 손에 채우기에 족할 것 같으면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 하매

11 이스라엘 왕이 대답하여 이르되 갑옷 입는 자가 갑옷 벗는 자 같이 자랑하지 못할 것이라 하라 하니라

12 그 때에 벤하닷이 왕들과 장막에서 마시다가 이 말을 듣고 그의 신하들에게 이르되 너희는 진영을 치라 하매 곧 성읍을 향하여 진영을 치니라

13 한 선지자가 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 나아가서 이르되 여호와의 말씀이 네가 이 큰 무리를 보느냐 내가 오늘 그들을 네 손에 넘기리니 너는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 하셨나이다

14 아합이 이르되 누구를 통하여 그렇게 하시리이까 대답하되 여호와의 말씀이 각 지방 고관의 청년들로 하리라 하셨나이다 아합이 이르되 누가 싸움을 시작하리이까 대답하되 왕이니이다

15 아합이 이에 각 지방 고관의 청년들을 계수하니 이백삼십이 명이요 그 외에 모든 백성 곧 이스라엘의 모든 자손을 계수하니 칠천 명이더라

16 그들이 정오에 나가니 벤하닷은 장막에서 돕는 왕 삼십이 명과 더불어 마시고 취한 중이라

17 각 지방의 고관의 청년들이 먼저 나갔더라 벤하닷이 정탐꾼을 보냈더니 그들이 보고하여 이르되 사마리아에서 사람들이 나오더이다 하매

18 그가 이르되 화친하러 나올지라도 사로잡고 싸우러 나올지라도 사로잡으라 하니라

19 각 지방 고관의 청년들과 그들을 따르는 군대가 성읍에서 나가서

20 각각 적군을 쳐죽이매 아람 사람이 도망하는지라 이스라엘이 쫓으니 아람 왕 벤하닷이 말을 타고 마병과 더불어 도망하여 피하니라

21 이스라엘 왕이 나가서 말과 병거를 치고 또 아람 사람을 쳐서 크게 이겼더라

아람 군대의 두 번째 공격

22 그 선지자가 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 이르되 왕은 가서 힘을 기르고 왕께서 행할 일을 알고 준비하소서 해가 바뀌면 아람 왕이 왕을 치러 오리이다 하니라

23 아람 왕의 신하들이 왕께 아뢰되 그들의 신은 산의 신이므로 그들이 우리보다 강하였거니와 우리가 만일 평지에서 그들과 싸우면 반드시 그들보다 강할지라

24 또 왕은 이 일을 행하실지니 곧 왕들을 제하여 각각 그 곳에서 떠나게 하고 그들 대신에 총독들을 두시고

25 또 왕의 잃어버린 군대와 같은 군대를 왕을 위하여 보충하고 말은 말대로, 병거는 병거대로 보충하고 우리가 평지에서 그들과 싸우면 반드시 그들보다 강하리이다 왕이 그 말을 듣고 그리하니라

26 해가 바뀌니 벤하닷이 아람 사람을 소집하고 아벡으로 올라와서 이스라엘과 싸우려 하매

27 이스라엘 자손도 소집되어 군량을 받고 마주 나가서 그들 앞에 진영을 치니 이스라엘 자손은 두 무리의 적은 염소 떼와 같고 아람 사람은 그 땅에 가득하였더라

28 그 때에 하나님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 말하여 이르되 여호와의 말씀에 아람 사람이 말하기를 여호와는 산의 신이요 골짜기의 신은 아니라 하는도다 그러므로 내가 이 큰 군대를 다 네 손에 넘기리니 너희는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 하셨나이다 하니라

29 진영이 서로 대치한 지 칠 일이라 일곱째 날에 접전하여 이스라엘 자손이 하루에 아람 보병 십만 명을 죽이매

30 그 남은 자는 아벡으로 도망하여 성읍으로 들어갔더니 그 성벽이 그 남은 자 이만 칠천 명 위에 무너지고 벤하닷은 도망하여 성읍에 이르러 골방으로 들어가니라

31 그의 신하들이 그에게 말하되 우리가 들은즉 이스라엘 집의 왕들은 인자한 왕이라 하니 만일 우리가 굵은 베로 허리를 동이고 테두리를 머리에 쓰고 이스라엘의 왕에게로 나아가면 그가 혹시 왕의 생명을 살리리이다 하고

32 그들이 굵은 베로 허리를 동이고 테두리를 머리에 쓰고 이스라엘의 왕에게 이르러 이르되 왕의 종 벤하닷이 청하기를 내 생명을 살려 주옵소서 하더이다 아합이 이르되 그가 아직도 살아 있느냐 그는 내 형제이니라

33 그 사람들이 좋은 징조로 여기고 그 말을 얼른 받아 대답하여 이르되 벤하닷은 왕의 형제니이다 왕이 이르되 너희는 가서 그를 인도하여 오라 벤하닷이 이에 왕에게 나아오니 왕이 그를 병거에 올린지라

34 벤하닷이 왕께 아뢰되 내 아버지께서 당신의 아버지에게서 빼앗은 모든 성읍을 내가 돌려보내리이다 또 내 아버지께서 사마리아에서 만든 것 같이 당신도 다메섹에서 당신을 위하여 거리를 만드소서 아합이 이르되 내가 이 조약으로 인해 당신을 놓으리라 하고 이에 더불어 조약을 맺고 그를 놓았더라

한 선지자가 아합을 규탄하다

35 선지자의 무리 중 한 사람이 여호와의 말씀을 그의 친구에게 이르되 너는 나를 치라 하였더니 그 사람이 치기를 싫어하는지라

36 그가 그 사람에게 이르되 네가 여호와의 말씀을 듣지 아니하였으니 네가 나를 떠나갈 때에 사자가 너를 죽이리라 그 사람이 그의 곁을 떠나가더니 사자가 그를 만나 죽였더라

37 그가 또 다른 사람을 만나 이르되 너는 나를 치라 하매 그 사람이 그를 치되 상하도록 친지라

38 선지자가 가서 수건으로 자기의 눈을 가리어 변장하고 길 가에서 왕을 기다리다가

39 왕이 지나갈 때에 그가 소리 질러 왕을 불러 이르되 종이 전장 가운데에 나갔더니 한 사람이 돌이켜 어떤 사람을 끌고 내게로 와서 말하기를 이 사람을 지키라 만일 그를 잃어 버리면 네 생명으로 그의 생명을 대신하거나 그렇지 아니하면 네가 은 한 달란트를 내어야 하리라 하였거늘

40 종이 이리 저리 일을 볼 동안에 그가 없어졌나이다 이스라엘 왕이 그에게 이르되 네가 스스로 결정하였으니 그대로 당하여야 하리라

41 그가 급히 자기의 눈을 가린 수건을 벗으니 이스라엘 왕이 그는 선지자 중의 한 사람인 줄을 알아본지라

42 그가 왕께 아뢰되 여호와의 말씀이 내가 멸하기로 작정한 사람을 네 손으로 놓았은즉 네 목숨은 그의 목숨을 대신하고 네 백성은 그의 백성을 대신하리라 하셨나이다

43 이스라엘 왕이 근심하고 답답하여 그의 왕궁으로 돌아가려고 사마리아에 이르니라

Entonces Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó a todo su ejército, y con él a treinta y dos reyes, con caballos y carros; y subió y sitió a Samaria, y la combatió. 2. Y envió mensajeros a la ciudad a Acab rey de Israel, diciendo: 3. Así ha dicho Ben-adad: Tu plata y tu oro son míos, y tus mujeres y tus hijos hermosos son míos. 4. Y el rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Como tú dices, rey señor mío, yo soy tuyo, y todo lo que tengo. 5. Volviendo los mensajeros otra vez, dijeron: Así dijo Ben-adad: Yo te envié a decir: Tu plata y tu oro, y tus mujeres y tus hijos me darás. 6. Además, mañana a estas horas enviaré yo a ti mis siervos, los cuales registrarán tu casa, y las casas de tus siervos; y tomarán y llevarán todo lo precioso que tengas. 7. Entonces el rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: Entended, y ved ahora cómo este no busca sino mal; pues ha enviado a mí por mis mujeres y mis hijos, y por mi plata y por mi oro, y yo no se lo he negado. 8. Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le respondieron: No le obedezcas, ni hagas lo que te pide. 9. Entonces él respondió a los embajadores de Ben-adad: Decid al rey mi señor: Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu siervo al principio; mas esto no lo puedo hacer. Y los embajadores fueron, y le dieron la respuesta. 10. Y Ben-adad nuevamente le envió a decir: Así me hagan los dioses, y aun me añadan, que el polvo de Samaria no bastará a los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue. 11. Y el rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Decidle que no se alabe tanto el que se ciñe las armas, como el que las desciñe. 12. Y cuando él oyó esta palabra, estando bebiendo con los reyes en las tiendas, dijo a sus siervos: Disponeos. Y ellos se dispusieron contra la ciudad. 13. Y he aquí un profeta vino a Acab rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿Has visto esta gran multitud? He aquí yo te la entregaré hoy en tu mano, para que conozcas que yo soy Jehová. 14. Y respondió Acab: ¿Por mano de quién? Él dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por mano de los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias. Y dijo Acab: ¿Quién comenzará la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú. 15. Entonces él pasó revista a los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias, los cuales fueron doscientos treinta y dos. Luego pasó revista a todo el pueblo, a todos los hijos de Israel, que fueron siete mil. 16. Y salieron a mediodía. Y estaba Ben-adad bebiendo y embriagándose en las tiendas, él y los reyes, los treinta y dos reyes que habían venido en su ayuda. 17. Y los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias salieron los primeros. Y Ben-adad había enviado quien le dio aviso, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria. 18. Él entonces dijo: Si han salido por paz, tomadlos vivos; y si han salido para pelear, tomadlos vivos. 19. Salieron, pues, de la ciudad los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias, y en pos de ellos el ejército. 20. Y mató cada uno al que venía contra él; y huyeron los sirios, siguiéndoles los de Israel. Y el rey de Siria, Ben-adad, se escapó en un caballo con alguna gente de caballería. 21. Y salió el rey de Israel, e hirió la gente de a caballo, y los carros, y deshizo a los sirios causándoles gran estrago. 22. Vino luego el profeta al rey de Israel y le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y considera y mira lo que hagas; porque pasado un año, el rey de Siria vendrá contra ti. 23. Y los siervos del rey de Siria le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes, por eso nos han vencido; mas si peleáremos con ellos en la llanura, se verá si no los vencemos. 24. Haz, pues, así: Saca a los reyes cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en lugar de ellos. 25. Y tú fórmate otro ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballo por caballo, y carro por carro; luego pelearemos con ellos en campo raso, y veremos si no los vencemos. Y él les dio oído, y lo hizo así. 26. Pasado un año, Ben-adad pasó revista al ejército de los sirios, y vino a Afec para pelear contra Israel. 27. Los hijos de Israel fueron también inspeccionados, y tomando provisiones fueron al encuentro de ellos; y acamparon los hijos de Israel delante de ellos como dos rebañuelos de cabras, y los sirios llenaban la tierra. 28. Vino entonces el varón de Dios al rey de Israel, y le habló diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto los sirios han dicho: Jehová es Dios de los montes, y no Dios de los valles, yo entregaré toda esta gran multitud en tu mano, para que conozcáis que yo soy Jehová. 29. Siete días estuvieron acampados los unos frente a los otros, y al séptimo día se dio la batalla; y los hijos de Israel mataron de los sirios en un solo día cien mil hombres de a pie. 30. Los demás huyeron a Afec, a la ciudad; y el muro cayó sobre veintisiete mil hombres que habían quedado. También Ben-adad vino huyendo a la ciudad, y se escondía de aposento en aposento. 31. And he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad: 3. ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your best wives and children also are mine.’” 4. And the king of Israel answered, “As you say, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.” 5. The messengers came again and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I sent to you, saying, “Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children.” 6. Nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.’” 7. Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, “Mark, now, and see how this man is seeking trouble, for he sent to me for my wives and my children, and for my silver and my gold, and I did not refuse him.” 8. And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.” 9. So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you first demanded of your servant I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” And the messengers departed and brought him word again. 10. Ben-hadad sent to him and said, “The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.” 11. And the king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.’” 12. When Ben-hadad heard this message as he was drinking with the kings in the booths, he said to his men, “Take your positions.” And they took their positions against the city. Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad 13. And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” 14. And Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says the Lord, By the servants of the governors of the districts.” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.” 15. Then he mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand. 16. And they went out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the thirty-two kings who helped him. 17. The servants of the governors of the districts went out first. And Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, “Men are coming out from Samaria.” 18. He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.” 19. So these went out of the city, the servants of the governors of the districts and the army that followed them. 20. And each struck down his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21. And the king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and struck the Syrians with a great blow. 22. Then the prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Come, strengthen yourself, and consider well what you have to do, for in the spring the king of Syria will come up against you.” 23. And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24. And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places, 25. and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so. Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad Again 26. In the spring, Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel. 27. And the people of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went against them. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the country. 28. And a man of God came near and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’” 29. And they encamped opposite one another seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined. And the people of Israel struck down of the Syrians 100,000 foot soldiers in one day. 30. And the rest fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men who were left. Ben-hadad also fled and entered an inner chamber in the city. 31. And his servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.” 32. So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please, let me live.’” And he said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.” 33. Now the men were watching for a sign, and they quickly took it up from him and said, “Yes, your brother Ben-hadad.” Then he said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34. And Ben-hadad said to him, “The cities that my father took from your father I will restore, and you may establish bazaars for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” And Ahab said, “I will let you go on these terms.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go. A Prophet Condemns Ben-hadad’s Release 35. And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow at the command of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him. 36. Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you have gone from me, a lion shall strike you down.” And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion met him and struck him down. 37. Then he found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” And the man struck him—struck him and wounded him. 38. So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39. And as the king passed, he cried to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier turned and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ 40. And as your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.” 41. Then he hurried to take the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42. And he said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people.’” 43. And the king of Israel went to his house vexed and sullen and came to Samaria.

Acab derrota a los sirios

Además, mañana a estas horas enviaré yo a ti mis siervos, los cuales registrarán tu casa, y las casas de tus siervos; y tomarán y llevarán todo lo precioso que tengas.
Entonces el rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: Entended, y ved ahora cómo este no busca sino mal; pues ha enviado a mí por mis mujeres y mis hijos, y por mi plata y por mi oro, y yo no se lo he negado.
Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le respondieron: No le obedezcas, ni hagas lo que te pide.
Entonces él respondió a los embajadores de Ben-adad: Decid al rey mi señor: Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu siervo al principio; mas esto no lo puedo hacer. Y los embajadores fueron, y le dieron la respuesta.
Y Ben-adad nuevamente le envió a decir: Así me hagan los dioses, y aun me añadan, que el polvo de Samaria no bastará a los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue.
Y el rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Decidle que no se alabe tanto el que se ciñe las armas, como el que las desciñe.
Y cuando él oyó esta palabra, estando bebiendo con los reyes en las tiendas, dijo a sus siervos: Disponeos. Y ellos se dispusieron contra la ciudad.
Y he aquí un profeta vino a Acab rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿Has visto esta gran multitud? He aquí yo te la entregaré hoy en tu mano, para que conozcas que yo soy Jehová.
Y respondió Acab: ¿Por mano de quién? Él dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por mano de los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias. Y dijo Acab: ¿Quién comenzará la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú.
Entonces él pasó revista a los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias, los cuales fueron doscientos treinta y dos. Luego pasó revista a todo el pueblo, a todos los hijos de Israel, que fueron siete mil.
Y salieron a mediodía. Y estaba Ben-adad bebiendo y embriagándose en las tiendas, él y los reyes, los treinta y dos reyes que habían venido en su ayuda.
Y los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias salieron los primeros. Y Ben-adad había enviado quien le dio aviso, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria.
Él entonces dijo: Si han salido por paz, tomadlos vivos; y si han salido para pelear, tomadlos vivos.
Salieron, pues, de la ciudad los siervos de los príncipes de las provincias, y en pos de ellos el ejército.
Y mató cada uno al que venía contra él; y huyeron los sirios, siguiéndoles los de Israel. Y el rey de Siria, Ben-adad, se escapó en un caballo con alguna gente de caballería.
Y salió el rey de Israel, e hirió la gente de a caballo, y los carros, y deshizo a los sirios causándoles gran estrago.
Vino luego el profeta al rey de Israel y le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y considera y mira lo que hagas; porque pasado un año, el rey de Siria vendrá contra ti.
Y los siervos del rey de Siria le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes, por eso nos han vencido; mas si peleáremos con ellos en la llanura, se verá si no los vencemos.
Haz, pues, así: Saca a los reyes cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en lugar de ellos.
Y tú fórmate otro ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballo por caballo, y carro por carro; luego pelearemos con ellos en campo raso, y veremos si no los vencemos. Y él les dio oído, y lo hizo así.
Pasado un año, Ben-adad pasó revista al ejército de los sirios, y vino a Afec para pelear contra Israel.
Los hijos de Israel fueron también inspeccionados, y tomando provisiones fueron al encuentro de ellos; y acamparon los hijos de Israel delante de ellos como dos rebañuelos de cabras, y los sirios llenaban la tierra.
Vino entonces el varón de Dios al rey de Israel, y le habló diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto los sirios han dicho: Jehová es Dios de los montes, y no Dios de los valles, yo entregaré toda esta gran multitud en tu mano, para que conozcáis que yo soy Jehová.
Siete días estuvieron acampados los unos frente a los otros, y al séptimo día se dio la batalla; y los hijos de Israel mataron de los sirios en un solo día cien mil hombres de a pie.
Los demás huyeron a Afec, a la ciudad; y el muro cayó sobre veintisiete mil hombres que habían quedado. También Ben-adad vino huyendo a la ciudad, y se escondía de aposento en aposento.
