왕이 이사야의 충고를 듣고자 하다(사 37:1-7)

1 히스기야 왕이 듣고 그 옷을 찢고 굵은 베를 두르고 여호와의 전에 들어가서

2 왕궁의 책임자인 엘리야김과 서기관 셉나와 제사장 중 장로들에게 굵은 베를 둘려서 아모스의 아들 선지자 이사야에게로 보내매

3 그들이 이사야에게 이르되 히스기야의 말씀이 오늘은 환난과 징벌과 모욕의 날이라 아이를 낳을 때가 되었으나 해산할 힘이 없도다

4 랍사게가 그의 주 앗수르 왕의 보냄을 받고 와서 살아 계신 하나님을 비방하였으니 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 혹시 그의 말을 들으셨을지라 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 그 들으신 말 때문에 꾸짖으실 듯하니 당신은 이 남아 있는 자들을 위하여 기도하소서 하더이다 하니라

5 이와 같이 히스기야 왕의 신복이 이사야에게 나아가니

6 이사야가 그들에게 이르되 너희는 너희 주에게 이렇게 말하라 여호와의 말씀이 너는 앗수르 왕의 신복에게 들은 바 나를 모욕하는 말 때문에 두려워하지 말라

7 내가 한 영을 그의 속에 두어 그로 소문을 듣고 그의 본국으로 돌아가게 하고 또 그의 본국에서 그에게 칼에 죽게 하리라 하셨느니라 하더라

앗수르가 또 위협하다(사 37:8-20)

8 랍사게가 돌아가다가 앗수르 왕이 이미 라기스에서 떠났다 함을 듣고 립나로 가서 앗수르 왕을 만났으니 왕이 거기서 립나와 싸우는 중이더라

9 앗수르 왕은 구스 왕 디르하가가 당신과 싸우고자 나왔다 함을 듣고 다시 히스기야에게 사자를 보내며 이르되

10 너희는 유다의 왕 히스기야에게 이같이 말하여 이르기를 네가 믿는 네 하나님이 예루살렘을 앗수르 왕의 손에 넘기지 아니하겠다 하는 말에 속지 말라

11 앗수르의 여러 왕이 여러 나라에 행한 바 진멸한 일을 네가 들었나니 네가 어찌 구원을 얻겠느냐

12 내 조상들이 멸하신 여러 민족 곧 고산과 하란과 레셉과 들라살에 있는 에덴 족속을 그 나라들의 신들이 건졌느냐

13 하맛 왕과 아르밧 왕과 스발와임 성의 왕과 헤나와 아와의 왕들이 다 어디 있느냐 하라 하니라

14 히스기야가 사자의 손에서 편지를 받아보고 여호와의 성전에 올라가서 히스기야가 그 편지를 여호와 앞에 펴 놓고

15 그 앞에서 히스기야가 기도하여 이르되 그룹들 위에 계신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주는 천하 만국에 홀로 하나님이시라 주께서 천지를 만드셨나이다

16 여호와여 귀를 기울여 들으소서 여호와여 눈을 떠서 보시옵소서 산헤립이 살아 계신 하나님을 비방하러 보낸 말을 들으시옵소서

17 여호와여 앗수르 여러 왕이 과연 여러 민족과 그들의 땅을 황폐하게 하고

18 또 그들의 신들을 불에 던졌사오니 이는 그들이 신이 아니요 사람의 손으로 만든 것 곧 나무와 돌 뿐이므로 멸하였나이다

19 우리 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 이제 우리를 그의 손에서 구원하옵소서 그리하시면 천하 만국이 주 여호와가 홀로 하나님이신 줄 알리이다 하니라

이사야가 왕에게 보낸 여호와의 말씀(사 37:21-38)

20 아모스의 아들 이사야가 히스기야에게 보내 이르되 이스라엘 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 네가 앗수르 왕 산헤립 때문에 내게 기도하는 것을 내가 들었노라 하셨나이다

21 여호와께서 앗수르 왕에게 대하여 이같이 말씀하시기를 처녀 딸 시온이 너를 멸시하며 너를 비웃었으며 딸 예루살렘이 너를 향하여 머리를 흔들었느니라

22 네가 누구를 꾸짖었으며 비방하였느냐 누구를 향하여 소리를 높였으며 눈을 높이 떴느냐 이스라엘의 거룩한 자에게 그리하였도다

23 네가 사자들을 통하여 주를 비방하여 이르기를 내가 많은 병거를 거느리고 여러 산 꼭대기에 올라가며 레바논 깊은 곳에 이르러 높은 백향목과 아름다운 잣나무를 베고 내가 그 가장 먼 곳에 들어가며 그의 동산의 무성한 수풀에 이르리라

24 내가 땅을 파서 이방의 물을 마셨고 나의 발바닥으로 애굽의 모든 강들을 말렸노라 하였도다

25 네가 듣지 못하였느냐 이 일은 내가 태초부터 행하였고 옛날부터 정한 바라 이제 내가 이루어 너로 견고한 성들을 멸하여 무너진 돌무더기가 되게 함이니라

26 그러므로 거기에 거주하는 백성의 힘이 약하여 두려워하며 놀랐나니 그들은 들의 채소와 푸른 풀과 지붕의 잡초와 자라기 전에 시든 곡초 같이 되었느니라

27 네 거처와 네 출입과 네가 내게 향한 분노를 내가 다 아노니

28 네가 내게 향한 분노와 네 교만한 말이 내 귀에 들렸도다 그러므로 내가 갈고리를 네 코에 꿰고 재갈을 네 입에 물려 너를 오던 길로 끌어 돌이키리라 하셨나이다

29 또 네게 보일 징조가 이러하니 너희가 금년에는 스스로 자라난 것을 먹고 내년에는 그것에서 난 것을 먹되 제삼년에는 심고 거두며 포도원을 심고 그 열매를 먹으리라

30 유다 족속 중에서 피하고 남은 자는 다시 아래로 뿌리를 내리고 위로 열매를 맺을지라

31 남은 자는 예루살렘에서부터 나올 것이요 피하는 자는 시온 산에서부터 나오리니 여호와의 열심이 이 일을 이루리라 하셨나이다 하니라

32 그러므로 여호와께서 앗수르 왕을 가리켜 이르시기를 그가 이 성에 이르지 못하며 이리로 화살을 쏘지 못하며 방패를 성을 향하여 세우지 못하며 치려고 토성을 쌓지도 못하고

33 오던 길로 돌아가고 이 성에 이르지 못하리라 하셨으니 이는 여호와의 말씀이시라

34 내가 나와 나의 종 다윗을 위하여 이 성을 보호하여 구원하리라 하셨나이다 하였더라

산헤립이 죽다

35 이 밤에 여호와의 사자가 나와서 앗수르 진영에서 군사 십팔만 오천 명을 친지라 아침에 일찍이 일어나 보니 다 송장이 되었더라

36 앗수르 왕 산헤립이 떠나 돌아가서 니느웨에 거주하더니

37 그가 그의 신 니스록의 신전에서 경배할 때에 아드람멜렉과 사레셀이 그를 칼로 쳐죽이고 아라랏 땅으로 그들이 도망하매 그 아들 에살핫돈이 대신하여 왕이 되니라

Cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos y se cubrió de cilicio, y entró en la casa de Jehová. 2. Y envió a Eliaquim mayordomo, a Sebna escriba y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de cilicio, al profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz, 3. para que le dijesen: Así ha dicho Ezequías: Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia; porque los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas. 4. Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras del Rabsaces, a quien el rey de los asirios su señor ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios viviente, y para vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído; por tanto, eleva oración por el remanente que aún queda. 5. Vinieron, pues, los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías. 6. E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis a vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová: No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria. 7. He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volverá a su tierra; y haré que en su tierra caiga a espada. 8. Y regresando el Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo contra Libna; porque oyó que se había ido de Laquis. 9. Y oyó decir que Tirhaca rey de Etiopía había salido para hacerle guerra. Entonces volvió él y envió embajadores a Ezequías, diciendo: 10. Así diréis a Ezequías rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria. 11. He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y escaparás tú? 12. ¿Acaso libraron sus dioses a las naciones que mis padres destruyeron, esto es, Gozán, Harán, Resef, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar? 13. ¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, y el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva? 14. Y tomó Ezequías las cartas de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió a la casa de Jehová, y las extendió Ezequías delante de Jehová. 15. Y oró Ezequías delante de Jehová, diciendo: Jehová Dios de Israel, que moras entre los querubines, solo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra. 16. Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira; y oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente. 17. Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido las naciones y sus tierras; 18. y que echaron al fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera o piedra, y por eso los destruyeron. 19. Ahora, pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te ruego, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que solo tú, Jehová, eres Dios. 20. Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz envió a decir a Ezequías: Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Lo que me pediste acerca de Senaquerib rey de Asiria, he oído. 21. Esta es la palabra que Jehová ha pronunciado acerca de él: La virgen hija de Sion te menosprecia, te escarnece; detrás de ti mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén. 22. ¿A quién has vituperado y blasfemado? ¿y contra quién has alzado la voz, y levantado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel. 23. Por mano de tus mensajeros has vituperado a Jehová, y has dicho: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de los montes, a lo más inaccesible del Líbano; cortaré sus altos cedros, sus cipreses más escogidos; me alojaré en sus más remotos lugares, en el bosque de sus feraces campos. 24. Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas extrañas, he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de Egipto. 25. ¿Nunca has oído que desde tiempos antiguos yo lo hice, y que desde los días de la antigüedad lo tengo ideado? Y ahora lo he hecho venir, y tú serás para hacer desolaciones, para reducir las ciudades fortificadas a montones de escombros. 26. Sus moradores fueron de corto poder; fueron acobardados y confundidos; vinieron a ser como la hierba del campo, y como hortaliza verde, como heno de los terrados, marchitado antes de su madurez. 27. He conocido tu situación, tu salida y tu entrada, y tu furor contra mí. 28. Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, por cuanto tu arrogancia ha subido a mis oídos, yo pondré mi garfio en tu nariz, y mi freno en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste. 29. Y esto te daré por señal, oh Ezequías: Este año comeréis lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo; y el tercer año sembraréis, y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis el fruto de ellas. 30. Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que hubiere quedado de la casa de Judá, volverá a echar raíces abajo, y llevará fruto arriba. 31. Porque saldrá de Jerusalén remanente, y del monte de Sion los que se salven. El celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto. 32. Por tanto, así dice Jehová acerca del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella con escudo, ni levantará contra ella baluarte. 33. Por el mismo camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice Jehová. 34. Porque yo ampararé esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor a mí mismo, y por amor a David mi siervo. 35. Y aconteció que aquella misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová, y mató en el campamento de los asirios a ciento ochenta y cinco mil; y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí que todo era cuerpos de muertos. 36. Entonces Senaquerib rey de Asiria se fue, y volvió a Nínive, donde se quedó. 37. Y aconteció que mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc su dios, Adramelec y Sarezer sus hijos lo hirieron a espada, y huyeron a tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo. 2 #Kings 19 Isaiah Reassures Hezekiah 1. As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord. 2. And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. 3. They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. 4. It may be that the Lord your God heard all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.” 5. When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, 6. Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled me. 7. Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’” Sennacherib Defies the Lord 8. The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he heard that the king had left Lachish. 9. Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “Behold, he has set out to fight against you.” So he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10. “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11. Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12. Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? 13. Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’” Hezekiah’s Prayer 14. Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. 15. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 16. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17. Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18. and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 19. So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.” Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall 20. Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. 21. This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: “She despises you, she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wags her head behind you— the daughter of Jerusalem. 22. “Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to the heights? Against the Holy One of Israel! 23. By your messengers you have mocked the Lord, and you have said, ‘With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon; I felled its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses; I entered its farthest lodging place, its most fruitful forest. 24. I dug wells and drank foreign waters, and I dried up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt.’ 25. “Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins, 26. while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown. 27. “But I know your sitting down and your going out and coming in, and your raging against me. 28. Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come into my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came. 29. “And this shall be the sign for you: this year eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs of the same. Then in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30. And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 31. For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord will do this. 32. “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. 33. By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 34. For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.” 35. And that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 36. Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh. 37. And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

Judá es librado de Senaquerib

(2 Cr. 32.20-23; Is. 37.1-38)

Cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos y se cubrió de cilicio, y entró en la casa de Jehová.
Y envió a Eliaquim mayordomo, a Sebna escriba y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de cilicio, al profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz,
para que le dijesen: Así ha dicho Ezequías: Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia; porque los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas.
Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras del Rabsaces, a quien el rey de los asirios su señor ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios viviente, y para vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído; por tanto, eleva oración por el remanente que aún queda.
Vinieron, pues, los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías.
E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis a vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová: No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria.
He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volverá a su tierra; y haré que en su tierra caiga a espada.
Y regresando el Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo contra Libna; porque oyó que se había ido de Laquis.
Y oyó decir que Tirhaca rey de Etiopía había salido para hacerle guerra. Entonces volvió él y envió embajadores a Ezequías, diciendo:
Así diréis a Ezequías rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria.
He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y escaparás tú?
¿Acaso libraron sus dioses a las naciones que mis padres destruyeron, esto es, Gozán, Harán, Resef, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar?
¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, y el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva?
Y tomó Ezequías las cartas de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió a la casa de Jehová, y las extendió Ezequías delante de Jehová.
Y oró Ezequías delante de Jehová, diciendo: Jehová Dios de Israel, que moras entre los querubines, solo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra.
Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira; y oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente.
Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido las naciones y sus tierras;
y que echaron al fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera o piedra, y por eso los destruyeron.
Ahora, pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te ruego, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que solo tú, Jehová, eres Dios.
Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz envió a decir a Ezequías: Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Lo que me pediste acerca de Senaquerib rey de Asiria, he oído.
Esta es la palabra que Jehová ha pronunciado acerca de él: La virgen hija de Sion te menosprecia, te escarnece; detrás de ti mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén.
¿A quién has vituperado y blasfemado? ¿y contra quién has alzado la voz, y levantado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel.
Por mano de tus mensajeros has vituperado a Jehová, y has dicho: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de los montes, a lo más inaccesible del Líbano; cortaré sus altos cedros, sus cipreses más escogidos; me alojaré en sus más remotos lugares, en el bosque de sus feraces campos.
Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas extrañas, he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de Egipto.
¿Nunca has oído que desde tiempos antiguos yo lo hice, y que desde los días de la antigüedad lo tengo ideado? Y ahora lo he hecho venir, y tú serás para hacer desolaciones, para reducir las ciudades fortificadas a montones de escombros.
Sus moradores fueron de corto poder; fueron acobardados y confundidos; vinieron a ser como la hierba del campo, y como hortaliza verde, como heno de los terrados, marchitado antes de su madurez.
He conocido tu situación, tu salida y tu entrada, y tu furor contra mí.
Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, por cuanto tu arrogancia ha subido a mis oídos, yo pondré mi garfio en tu nariz, y mi freno en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste.
Y esto te daré por señal, oh Ezequías: Este año comeréis lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo; y el tercer año sembraréis, y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis el fruto de ellas.
Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que hubiere quedado de la casa de Judá, volverá a echar raíces abajo, y llevará fruto arriba.
Porque saldrá de Jerusalén remanente, y del monte de Sion los que se salven. El celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto.
Por tanto, así dice Jehová acerca del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella con escudo, ni levantará contra ella baluarte.
Por el mismo camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice Jehová.
Porque yo ampararé esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor a mí mismo, y por amor a David mi siervo.
Y aconteció que aquella misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová, y mató en el campamento de los asirios a ciento ochenta y cinco mil; y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí que todo era cuerpos de muertos.
Entonces Senaquerib rey de Asiria se fue, y volvió a Nínive, donde se quedó.
Y aconteció que mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc su dios, Adramelec y Sarezer sus hijos lo hirieron a espada, y huyeron a tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo.

Isaiah Reassures Hezekiah

As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord.
And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz.
They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.
It may be that the Lord your God heard all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.”
When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah,
Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled me.
Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’”

Sennacherib Defies the Lord
The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he heard that the king had left Lachish.
Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “Behold, he has set out to fight against you.” So he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,
“Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?
Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?
Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’”

Hezekiah’s Prayer
Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord.
And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.
Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God.
Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands
and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed.
So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.”

Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him:
“She despises you, she scorns you—
the virgin daughter of Zion;
she wags her head behind you—
the daughter of Jerusalem.
“Whom have you mocked and reviled?
