제 18 장

엘리야와 바알 선지자들

1 많은 날이 지나고 제삼년에 여호와의 말씀이 엘리야에게 임하여 이르시되 너는 가서 아합에게 보이라 내가 비를 지면에 내리리라

2 엘리야가 아합에게 보이려고 가니 그 때에 사마리아에 기근이 심하였더라

3 아합이 왕궁 맡은 자 오바댜를 불렀으니 이 오바댜는 여호와를 지극히 경외하는 자라

4 이세벨이 여호와의 선지자들을 멸할 때에 오바댜가 선지자 백 명을 가지고 오십 명씩 굴에 숨기고 떡과 물을 먹였더라

5 아합이 오바댜에게 이르되 이 땅의 모든 물 근원과 모든 내로 가자 혹시 꼴을 얻으리라 그리하면 말과 노새를 살리리니 짐승을 다 잃지 않게 되리라 하고

6 두 사람이 두루 다닐 땅을 나누어 아합은 홀로 이 길로 가고 오바댜는 홀로 저 길로 가니라

7 오바댜가 길에 있을 때에 엘리야가 그를 만난지라 그가 알아보고 엎드려 말하되 내 주 엘리야여 당신이시니이까

8 그가 그에게 대답하되 그러하다 가서 네 주에게 말하기를 엘리야가 여기 있다 하라

9 이르되 내가 무슨 죄를 범하였기에 당신이 당신의 종을 아합의 손에 넘겨 죽이게 하려 하시나이까

10 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내 주께서 사람을 보내어 당신을 찾지 아니한 족속이나 나라가 없었는데 그들이 말하기를 엘리야가 없다 하면 그 나라와 그 족속으로 당신을 보지 못하였다는 맹세를 하게 하였거늘

11 이제 당신의 말씀이 가서 네 주에게 말하기를 엘리야가 여기 있다 하라 하시나

12 내가 당신을 떠나간 후에 여호와의 영이 내가 알지 못하는 곳으로 당신을 이끌어 가시리니 내가 가서 아합에게 말하였다가 그가 당신을 찾지 못하면 내가 죽임을 당하리이다 당신의 종은 어려서부터 여호와를 경외하는 자라

13 이세벨이 여호와의 선지자들을 죽일 때에 내가 여호와의 선지자 중에 백 명을 오십 명씩 굴에 숨기고 떡과 물로 먹인 일이 내 주에게 들리지 아니하였나이까

14 이제 당신의 말씀이 가서 네 주에게 말하기를 엘리야가 여기 있다 하라 하시니 그리하면 그가 나를 죽이리이다

15 엘리야가 이르되 내가 섬기는 만군의 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내가 오늘 아합에게 보이리라

16 오바댜가 가서 아합을 만나 그에게 말하매 아합이 엘리야를 만나러 가다가

17 엘리야를 볼 때에 아합이 그에게 이르되 이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자여 너냐

18 그가 대답하되 내가 이스라엘을 괴롭게 한 것이 아니라 당신과 당신의 아버지의 집이 괴롭게 하였으니 이는 여호와의 명령을 버렸고 당신이 바알들을 따랐음이라

19 그런즉 사람을 보내 온 이스라엘과 이세벨의 상에서 먹는 바알의 선지자 사백오십 명과 아세라의 선지자 사백 명을 갈멜 산으로 모아 내게로 나아오게 하소서

20 아합이 이에 이스라엘의 모든 자손에게로 사람을 보내 선지자들을 갈멜 산으로 모으니라

21 엘리야가 모든 백성에게 가까이 나아가 이르되 너희가 어느 때까지 둘 사이에서 머뭇머뭇 하려느냐 여호와가 만일 하나님이면 그를 따르고 바알이 만일 하나님이면 그를 따를지니라 하니 백성이 말 한마디도 대답하지 아니하는지라

22 엘리야가 백성에게 이르되 여호와의 선지자는 나만 홀로 남았으나 바알의 선지자는 사백오십 명이로다

23 그런즉 송아지 둘을 우리에게 가져오게 하고 그들은 송아지 한 마리를 택하여 각을 떠서 나무 위에 놓고 불은 붙이지 말며 나도 송아지 한 마리를 잡아 나무 위에 놓고 불은 붙이지 않고

24 너희는 너희 신의 이름을 부르라 나는 여호와의 이름을 부르리니 이에 불로 응답하는 신 그가 하나님이니라 백성이 다 대답하되 그 말이 옳도다 하니라

25 엘리야가 바알의 선지자들에게 이르되 너희는 많으니 먼저 송아지 한 마리를 택하여 잡고 너희 신의 이름을 부르라 그러나 불을 붙이지 말라

26 그들이 받은 송아지를 가져다가 잡고 아침부터 낮까지 바알의 이름을 불러 이르되 바알이여 우리에게 응답하소서 하나 아무 소리도 없고 아무 응답하는 자도 없으므로 그들이 그 쌓은 제단 주위에서 뛰놀더라

27 정오에 이르러는 엘리야가 그들을 조롱하여 이르되 큰 소리로 부르라 그는 신인즉 묵상하고 있는지 혹은 그가 잠깐 나갔는지 혹은 그가 길을 행하는지 혹은 그가 잠이 들어서 깨워야 할 것인지 하매

28 이에 그들이 큰 소리로 부르고 그들의 규례를 따라 피가 흐르기까지 칼과 창으로 그들의 몸을 상하게 하더라

29 이같이 하여 정오가 지났고 그들이 미친 듯이 떠들어 저녁 소제 드릴 때까지 이르렀으나 아무 소리도 없고 응답하는 자나 돌아보는 자가 아무도 없더라

30 엘리야가 모든 백성을 향하여 이르되 내게로 가까이 오라 백성이 다 그에게 가까이 가매 그가 무너진 여호와의 제단을 수축하되

31 야곱의 아들들의 지파의 수효를 따라 엘리야가 돌 열두 개를 취하니 이 야곱은 옛적에 여호와의 말씀이 임하여 이르시기를 네 이름을 이스라엘이라 하리라 하신 자더라

32 그가 여호와의 이름을 의지하여 그 돌로 제단을 쌓고 제단을 돌아가며 곡식 종자 1)두 스아를 둘 만한 도랑을 만들고

33 또 나무를 벌이고 송아지의 각을 떠서 나무 위에 놓고 이르되 통 넷에 물을 채워다가 번제물과 나무 위에 부으라 하고

34 또 이르되 다시 그리하라 하여 다시 그리하니 또 이르되 세 번째로 그리하라 하여 세 번째로 그리하니

35 물이 제단으로 두루 흐르고 도랑에도 물이 가득 찼더라

36 저녁 소제 드릴 때에 이르러 선지자 엘리야가 나아가서 말하되 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 이스라엘 중에서 하나님이신 것과 내가 주의 종인 것과 내가 주의 말씀대로 이 모든 일을 행하는 것을 오늘 알게 하옵소서

37 여호와여 내게 응답하옵소서 내게 응답하옵소서 이 백성에게 주 여호와는 하나님이신 것과 주는 그들의 마음을 되돌이키심을 알게 하옵소서 하매

38 이에 여호와의 불이 내려서 번제물과 나무와 돌과 흙을 태우고 또 도랑의 물을 핥은지라

39 모든 백성이 보고 엎드려 말하되 여호와 그는 하나님이시로다 여호와 그는 하나님이시로다 하니

40 엘리야가 그들에게 이르되 바알의 선지자를 잡되 그들 중 하나도 도망하지 못하게 하라 하매 곧 잡은지라 엘리야가 그들을 기손 시내로 내려다가 거기서 죽이니라

가뭄이 그침

41 엘리야가 아합에게 이르되 올라가서 먹고 마시소서 큰 비 소리가 있나이다

42 아합이 먹고 마시러 올라가니라 엘리야가 갈멜 산 꼭대기로 올라가서 땅에 꿇어 엎드려 그의 얼굴을 무릎 사이에 넣고

43 그의 사환에게 이르되 올라가 바다쪽을 바라보라 그가 올라가 바라보고 말하되 아무것도 없나이다 이르되 일곱 번까지 다시 가라

44 일곱 번째 이르러서는 그가 말하되 바다에서 사람의 손 만한 작은 구름이 일어나나이다 이르되 올라가 아합에게 말하기를 비에 막히지 아니하도록 마차를 갖추고 내려가소서 하라 하니라

45 조금 후에 구름과 바람이 일어나서 하늘이 캄캄해지며 큰 비가 내리는지라 아합이 마차를 타고 이스르엘로 가니

46 여호와의 능력이 엘리야에게 임하매 그가 허리를 동이고 이스르엘로 들어가는 곳까지 아합 앞에서 달려갔더라

Pasados muchos días, vino palabra de Jehová a Elías en el tercer año, diciendo: Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y yo haré llover sobre la faz de la tierra. 2. Fue, pues, Elías a mostrarse a Acab. Y el hambre era grave en Samaria. 3. Y Acab llamó a Abdías su mayordomo. Abdías era en gran manera temeroso de Jehová. 4. Porque cuando Jezabel destruía a los profetas de Jehová, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los sustentó con pan y agua. 5. Dijo, pues, Acab a Abdías: Ve por el país a todas las fuentes de aguas, y a todos los arroyos, a ver si acaso hallaremos hierba con que conservemos la vida a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no nos quedemos sin bestias. 6. Y dividieron entre sí el país para recorrerlo; Acab fue por un camino, y Abdías fue separadamente por otro. 7. Y yendo Abdías por el camino, se encontró con Elías; y cuando lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro y dijo: ¿No eres tú mi señor Elías? 8. Y él respondió: Yo soy; ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías. 9. Pero él dijo: ¿En qué he pecado, para que entregues a tu siervo en mano de Acab para que me mate? 10. Vive Jehová tu Dios, que no ha habido nación ni reino adonde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte, y todos han respondido: No está aquí; y a reinos y a naciones él ha hecho jurar que no te han hallado. 11. ¿Y ahora tú dices: Ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías? 12. Acontecerá que luego que yo me haya ido, el Espíritu de Jehová te llevará adonde yo no sepa, y al venir yo y dar las nuevas a Acab, al no hallarte él, me matará; y tu siervo teme a Jehová desde su juventud. 13. ¿No ha sido dicho a mi señor lo que hice, cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas de Jehová; que escondí a cien varones de los profetas de Jehová de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los mantuve con pan y agua? 14. ¿Y ahora dices tú: Ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías; para que él me mate? 15. Y le dijo Elías: Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que hoy me mostraré a él. 16. Entonces Abdías fue a encontrarse con Acab, y le dio el aviso; y Acab vino a encontrarse con Elías. 17. Cuando Acab vio a Elías, le dijo: ¿Eres tú el que turbas a Israel? 18. Y él respondió: Yo no he turbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, dejando los mandamientos de Jehová, y siguiendo a los baales. 19. Envía, pues, ahora y congrégame a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo, y los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal, y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera, que comen de la mesa de Jezabel. Elías y los profetas de Baal 20. Entonces Acab convocó a todos los hijos de Israel, y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo. 21. Y acercándose Elías a todo el pueblo, dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo claudicaréis vosotros entre dos pensamientos? Si Jehová es Dios, seguidle; y si Baal, id en pos de él. Y el pueblo no respondió palabra. 22. Y Elías volvió a decir al pueblo: Sólo yo he quedado profeta de Jehová; mas de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres. 23. Dénsenos, pues, dos bueyes, y escojan ellos uno, y córtenlo en pedazos, y pónganlo sobre leña, pero no pongan fuego debajo; y yo prepararé el otro buey, y lo pondré sobre leña, y ningún fuego pondré debajo. 24. Invocad luego vosotros el nombre de vuestros dioses, y yo invocaré el nombre de Jehová; y el Dios que respondiere por medio de fuego, ese sea Dios. Y todo el pueblo respondió, diciendo: Bien dicho. 25. Entonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: Escogeos un buey, y preparadlo vosotros primero, pues que sois los más; e invocad el nombre de vuestros dioses, mas no pongáis fuego debajo. 26. Y ellos tomaron el buey que les fue dado y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: ¡Baal, respóndenos! Pero no había voz, ni quien respondiese; entre tanto, ellos andaban saltando cerca del altar que habían hecho. 27. Y aconteció al mediodía, que Elías se burlaba de ellos, diciendo: Gritad en alta voz, porque dios es; quizá está meditando, o tiene algún trabajo, o va de camino; tal vez duerme, y hay que despertarle. 28. Y ellos clamaban a grandes voces, y se sajaban con cuchillos y con lancetas conforme a su costumbre, hasta chorrear la sangre sobre ellos. 29. Pasó el mediodía, y ellos siguieron gritando frenéticamente hasta la hora de ofrecerse el sacrificio, pero no hubo ninguna voz, ni quien respondiese ni escuchase. 30. Entonces dijo Elías a todo el pueblo: Acercaos a mí. Y todo el pueblo se le acercó; y él arregló el altar de Jehová que estaba arruinado. 31. Y tomando Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dada palabra de Jehová diciendo, Israel será tu nombre, 32. edificó con las piedras un altar en el nombre de Jehová; después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en que cupieran dos medidas de grano. 33. Preparó luego la leña, y cortó el buey en pedazos, y lo puso sobre la leña. 34. Y dijo: Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua, y derramadla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña. Y dijo: Hacedlo otra vez; y otra vez lo hicieron. Dijo aún: Hacedlo la tercera vez; y lo hicieron la tercera vez, 35. de manera que el agua corría alrededor del altar, y también se había llenado de agua la zanja. 36. Cuando llegó la hora de ofrecerse el holocausto, se acercó el profeta Elías y dijo: Jehová Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por mandato tuyo he hecho todas estas cosas. 37. Respóndeme, Jehová, respóndeme, para que conozca este pueblo que tú, oh Jehová, eres el Dios, y que tú vuelves a ti el corazón de ellos. 38. After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2. So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3. And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4. and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5. And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6. So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. 7. And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?” 8. And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 9. And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10. As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. 11. And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’ 12. And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. 13. Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? 14. And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.” 15. And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” 16. So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17. When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” 18. And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals. 19. Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” The Prophets of Baal Defeated 20. So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21. And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22. Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. 23. Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it. 24. And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.” 25. Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.” 26. And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. 27. And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” 28. And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. 29. And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. 30. Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down. 31. Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,” 32. and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. 33. And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” 34. And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time. 35. And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water. 36. And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38. Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40. And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there. The Lord Sends Rain 41. And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 42. So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43. And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44. And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45. And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46. And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Elías regresa a ver a Acab

Pasados muchos días, vino palabra de Jehová a Elías en el tercer año, diciendo: Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y yo haré llover sobre la faz de la tierra.
Fue, pues, Elías a mostrarse a Acab. Y el hambre era grave en Samaria.
Y Acab llamó a Abdías su mayordomo. Abdías era en gran manera temeroso de Jehová.
Porque cuando Jezabel destruía a los profetas de Jehová, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los sustentó con pan y agua.
Dijo, pues, Acab a Abdías: Ve por el país a todas las fuentes de aguas, y a todos los arroyos, a ver si acaso hallaremos hierba con que conservemos la vida a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no nos quedemos sin bestias.
Y dividieron entre sí el país para recorrerlo; Acab fue por un camino, y Abdías fue separadamente por otro.
Y yendo Abdías por el camino, se encontró con Elías; y cuando lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro y dijo: ¿No eres tú mi señor Elías?
Y él respondió: Yo soy; ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías.
Pero él dijo: ¿En qué he pecado, para que entregues a tu siervo en mano de Acab para que me mate?
Vive Jehová tu Dios, que no ha habido nación ni reino adonde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte, y todos han respondido: No está aquí; y a reinos y a naciones él ha hecho jurar que no te han hallado.
¿Y ahora tú dices: Ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías?
Acontecerá que luego que yo me haya ido, el Espíritu de Jehová te llevará adonde yo no sepa, y al venir yo y dar las nuevas a Acab, al no hallarte él, me matará; y tu siervo teme a Jehová desde su juventud.
¿No ha sido dicho a mi señor lo que hice, cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas de Jehová; que escondí a cien varones de los profetas de Jehová de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los mantuve con pan y agua?
¿Y ahora dices tú: Ve, di a tu amo: Aquí está Elías; para que él me mate?
Y le dijo Elías: Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que hoy me mostraré a él.
Entonces Abdías fue a encontrarse con Acab, y le dio el aviso; y Acab vino a encontrarse con Elías.
Cuando Acab vio a Elías, le dijo: ¿Eres tú el que turbas a Israel?
Y él respondió: Yo no he turbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, dejando los mandamientos de Jehová, y siguiendo a los baales.
Envía, pues, ahora y congrégame a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo, y los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal, y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera, que comen de la mesa de Jezabel.

Elías y los profetas de Baal
Entonces Acab convocó a todos los hijos de Israel, y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo.
Y acercándose Elías a todo el pueblo, dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo claudicaréis vosotros entre dos pensamientos? Si Jehová es Dios, seguidle; y si Baal, id en pos de él. Y el pueblo no respondió palabra.
Y Elías volvió a decir al pueblo: Sólo yo he quedado profeta de Jehová; mas de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres.
Dénsenos, pues, dos bueyes, y escojan ellos uno, y córtenlo en pedazos, y pónganlo sobre leña, pero no pongan fuego debajo; y yo prepararé el otro buey, y lo pondré sobre leña, y ningún fuego pondré debajo.
Invocad luego vosotros el nombre de vuestros dioses, y yo invocaré el nombre de Jehová; y el Dios que respondiere por medio de fuego, ese sea Dios. Y todo el pueblo respondió, diciendo: Bien dicho.
Entonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: Escogeos un buey, y preparadlo vosotros primero, pues que sois los más; e invocad el nombre de vuestros dioses, mas no pongáis fuego debajo.
Y ellos tomaron el buey que les fue dado y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: ¡Baal, respóndenos! Pero no había voz, ni quien respondiese; entre tanto, ellos andaban saltando cerca del altar que habían hecho.
Y aconteció al mediodía, que Elías se burlaba de ellos, diciendo: Gritad en alta voz, porque dios es; quizá está meditando, o tiene algún trabajo, o va de camino; tal vez duerme, y hay que despertarle.
Y ellos clamaban a grandes voces, y se sajaban con cuchillos y con lancetas conforme a su costumbre, hasta chorrear la sangre sobre ellos.
Pasó el mediodía, y ellos siguieron gritando frenéticamente hasta la hora de ofrecerse el sacrificio, pero no hubo ninguna voz, ni quien respondiese ni escuchase.
Entonces dijo Elías a todo el pueblo: Acercaos a mí. Y todo el pueblo se le acercó; y él arregló el altar de Jehová que estaba arruinado.
Y tomando Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dada palabra de Jehová diciendo, Israel será tu nombre,
edificó con las piedras un altar en el nombre de Jehová; después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en que cupieran dos medidas de grano.
Preparó luego la leña, y cortó el buey en pedazos, y lo puso sobre la leña.
Y dijo: Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua, y derramadla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña. Y dijo: Hacedlo otra vez; y otra vez lo hicieron. Dijo aún: Hacedlo la tercera vez; y lo hicieron la tercera vez,
de manera que el agua corría alrededor del altar, y también se había llenado de agua la zanja.
Cuando llegó la hora de ofrecerse el holocausto, se acercó el profeta Elías y dijo: Jehová Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por mandato tuyo he hecho todas estas cosas.
Respóndeme, Jehová, respóndeme, para que conozca este pueblo que tú, oh Jehová, eres el Dios, y que tú vuelves a ti el corazón de ellos.

Elijah Confronts Ahab

The Prophets of Baal Defeated
